Oh Annie Darling,

Lovely post dear!
I wish I could 'enlighten' you but I am sitting in darkness myselfCry, I drove back from London this evening and switched the lights on in my living room and lo! the lights came on and there was a spark and everything went dark.Cry I changed the bulbs but that didn't work, soCry my living room is currently lighted by an Ikea lamp, like an exclusive restaurant where you need a torch to read the menu!

Thank God, the lights in the rest of the house are ok.

Now that I have lamented, Annie, I whole heartedly share your love for English, and your snobbery as well.
I think I am a bit more adaptable when it comes to txtngBig smile, whn I rmmbr(2 rmmbr!) tht I am sndng a txtBig smile... but the problem with doing that too frequently is you might forget the actual spelling...Sadly Annie, that is the way I see the world going, no one cares about language any more! Having said that, I am also aware that the English we use nowadays is not he same as the English used in say the 17th Century or even the 19th century, so it is always evolving (or degenerating!)Big smile
Some amount of informality I can tolerate because this is an informal forum...

I don't read spoilers because they are written in some alien speak which doesn't make sense to an ordinary mortal like me, and I also tend to stay away from OMGs! There are too many people pestering God in the name of BS!

Several words are used inappropriately in the forum, the most common is Bash/Bashing...

But what gets my goat is glaringly obvious mistakes in spelling & grammar & punctuation especially when I am reading FFs, OSs and SSs.

The other day, I was reading a story and the 4th line read, 'Arnav Singh Raizada was sitting in his office and he was board'...I did not venture any further!Big smile

But if I come across any more irritating words, I shall certainly let you know!

And your posts always give me the feeling of a 'home'ly atmosphere and never fail to soothe my over-tried nerves (I hope you get what I'm saying, for I am not as eloquent or well-versed in wordplay as you.)

Coming to your topic, I'm glad you addressed this. I too am somewhat a snob when it comes to the English language. Seeing a post sans all the principles of grammer really gets to me. You talked about the use of texting language. I'll explain my POV. Texting language has been so much ingrained into some people's systems (blame it on the need to be in the loop at college where such a language is the 'IN' thing or some other reason) that it's hard to even keep a check on how and where one uses it. I confess, even I am a victim to this 'Texting language disorder'. And although now I'm trying very hard to be rid of this habit I inadvertently do use it sometimes. So I can tolerate it to some extent and strive to overlook it when people tend to abuse/over-use it frequently in their post
s.

But the one thing which irks me here is the excessive use of  certain words which have wholly different meanings. I've seen posts aplenty speaking about 'Bashing', 'Gutter' and 'Redemption'  from the time I joined the If bandwagon.
And I end up literally pulling at my hair reading those posts. It all sounds so juvenile and is very irritating. I really wish there WAS a way to stop the wrong use of words in the wrong places. unfortunately, all we can do now is ignore them or turn the other way.

Phew! I don't know if any of what i said made sense. I am too sleepy but couldn't hit the sack before I posted on your thread.

Bye Annie. Will be back amidst all you lovely people tomorrow.Smile

Donning my mask, looking for Tonto and Silver before I progress to replying.
A very good evening EHug
I am very happy you have found a home to rest your weary bones and pontificate
Welcome
Its good to know I am not on my own in being a language snob
Text messaging I do understand is very much a vogue amongst students and as such
However I do wish when its the written word on certain formats it could be a language where one does not need a translation
I forgot about that particular word 'gutter'LOLLOLLOL
Its used alot

Well goodnight E
Sleep well
Tomorrow is another day and we will no doubt be back to pontificate to our hearts content

Were you talking to me on the phone in subdued lighting as well?
You never said!
Hope the menu is goodLOL

Thank you so very much for being  a partner in crime
Good to know I am not the only snob around about the English language

I have never got the hang of the text language and I doubt I ever shall
I agree about the spoilers
Its all a mystery to me so I have given up reading them

Likewise the first few lines of an OSs , FFs and SSs has me rooted or running dependant on the language used

LOLLOLLOL @ Arnav being board!

Good post!! And happy friendship day!! Sorry if this made no sense at all.:/

Here are a few other nuggets (paraphrasing since I do not recall in which post I read it):
- ... don't go hating on Arnav...
- ... Arnav was laying on the bed... (eggs, I presume!)
- ... Where is Sheesh Mahal at?
- ... he picked up the payal off of the floor and clasped it about her ankle...
- ... "Your not knowing how hawt Arnav is! You dont know nothing!"

I think I'll stop and take a breather... my mind is quite swirling with these (shudder) memories.

I was going to tell you when you said good night!

My exclusive menu is a cup of tea! After all the food that I have eaten all weekend, I decided to give my digestive system half a day off!

Now I shall proceed to retireBig smile, only to my bedroom! and find some more stories to read, to stop me from being 'board' like poor Arnav!!

Good Night!
