UP village sets code of conduct for men

Finally, it is the turn of men to face a code of conduct from the panchayat. A panchayat held in Haibatpur village in Muzaffarnagar district, on Saturday, declared that men up to 30 years of age would not be allowed to hang around unnecessarily at road crossings and public places.

Boys below 18 years of age, found smoking or chewing tobacco, will be punished. The elderly have also been 'advised' not to use hookah.

Naresh Kumar, a senior member of the panchayat, said that boys and men hanging around at public places without any work mostly indulge in eve-teasing and create nuisance.

"We have also barred boys from using bikes and mobiles, except in cases of emergency, because after getting these things they do not concentrate on studies and other household work," he said.

The panchayat further decided that people demanding dowry would be banished from the community and has suggested that the groom should not be accompanied by more than 11 people in the wedding procession so that there would be lesser financial burden on the bride's family. The panchayat was attended by members from 35 villages in the district.

Expectedly, the women in these villages have whole-heartedly welcomed the panchayat decision and have expressed the hope that the new code would make the men behave in a respectful and decent manner with the women.

"The society is patriarchal and unless the men change for the better, the society will not change," said Kulwanti Devi, 65, a homemaker.

It may be recalled that earlier this month, a panchayat in Asra village in Baghpat district had banned men below 40 from using mobile phones and venturing out of the house without an escort. Later, in view of the widespread criticism, the panchayat said that the restrictions were 'advisory in nature' and not binding.

On another note: perhaps its time to extend the quarantine on all Indian men and keep them confined within the four walls of their homes, till such time that they learn to behave themselves. Better keep the miscreants home than let them shame us internationally. Read on ...

Eve-teasers in India team raise a stink in China

BEIJING: Indian officials managing a youth delegation found themselves struggling to curb rampant harassment of girls by a section of the boys during their week-long tour of China. Desperate officials were forced to separate men and women in separate buses to avoid an untoward incident, according to some of the delegations members.

"I wonder if the youth affairs ministry chose some of the boys on the basis of their ability to use abusive language and harass girls," one of the women in the delegation told TNN. The 100-member team returned to India Saturday after spending 10 days at the invitation of the Chinese government.

Ministry secretary Nita Chowdhury told reporters in Beijing delegation members were chosen on the basis of their community service and certain special qualities out of different organizations like the government-backed National Social Service and the Nehru Yuva Kendra besides different political parties and university outfits.

Women members complained to both Chaudhury and the ministry in New Delhi before officials stepped in and asked some of the boys to behave, TNN was told. At one stage, a section of the troublemakers were ordered to keep out of a sightseeing tour and stay in their hotel rooms.

"Some of us were feeling ashamed being seen with these boys. We were hoping officials from the Nehru Kendra and the ministry were more strict. But they seemed helpless as well," a male member of the delegation said.

Officials talked about punishing and blacklisting the trouble makers, but it was a pointless threat because no one is hardly ever picked up on a youth exchange program a second time.

Some of the youth delegation, which is supposed to represent the best qualities of Indian youth, made lewd remarks on the dressing style of some Chinese girls and called them "chinkis".

They also nagged at girls in the delegation from the northeast. By the time the delegation moved to Inner Mangolia as part of the tour, the misbehaving boys began commenting on some north Indian girls as well, sources in the delegation said.

The tour also caused differences between the youth affairs and external affairs ministry over the Chinese decision to refuse visa to a member from Arunachal Pradesh. The external affairs ministry was peeved because it had been kept in the dark over the issue, sources said.

Name and shame with supporting video/photographic proof. In this day and age we've got the means to do it effectively and discreetly though obviously there should be no need in any case.

I'm studying in a very male dominated engineering course and I've never seen the guys misbehave no matter how far away from home we are on various trips (That doesn't mean they aren't checking out girls. Heck, I've been asked to rate girls by friends but it isn't obnoxious or offensive or threatening). Maybe it's university culture thing where this behaviour is allowed to flourish without check (In my uni it's grounds for expulsion so by the second semester the whole lot has been thrown out).

- i think its a wonderful Idea and Should be imposed throughout India, Maybe some of the rules such as No cellphone is a Bit too much . But still the overall , Not wondering around aimlessly and hanging around are good. It's about time that Men are handle to standards by Indian society . Maybe this might be the beginning to positive change. More rules should be Imposed on them .

there needs to be More strict Laws and law enforcement against men in Indian society .

The young man was thrashed and the young lady was FIRST stripped and then beaten.Both were then tied to trees. The cops came only because the crowd of on-lookers caused a traffic jam...

Yes came across that bit of news too. Somehow doesn't it seem like the men in India have taken the phrase "Gender Wars" literally to heart and are trying their best to exterminate all the women in the country.

Seriously .. 😲 , what has happened to India , I heard on the News about the Incident in Guwahati and Now this .. It is extremely disgusting , i don't understand what kind of psycho human would stoop so low like that.

I feel that this Mentality which men have in India needs to be exterminated ASAP!

How the hell the village decides to strip a woman, y has this become such a frequent occurrence, y the authorities fail to take any serious step towards?I say strip all the men of the villages and flog them publically to experience what it means to be humiliated and tortured?

herein lies the ultimate hypocrisy, these villages issue diktats about the clothing of women, restrict them to the four walls in the name of izzat but when an opportunity presents they never hesitate to shred the dignity of a woman.All these so called traditonalists, religious fanatics boast for following the holy literature but they conveiently forget the humiliation of draupadi and how the GOD marked it as the ultimate downfall of mankind.

And when is getting married become such a big crime, who gives these Khaap , villagers this power, cut water, electricity supply to the village , deprive them of basic facilities , as a punishment for standing as mock spectators to this atrocity.

Police and the govt has to be accountable, not just a suspension of the officers on duty but somethng harder so that they think twice before neglecting their duty.

Stripping women anytime they cross the limit of a patriarchal society is fairly normal in northern Indian heartland
It's all about women being possessions, covered up and protected till the rules are followed, treated like animals when rules are not.

This is not to say there are not wonderful men out there in India who are as humanist as they come
Wht is everyone surprised ? It's just that it's being reported better now.

No one is suprised by the talibanistic mentality of Indian Men, especially the species bred in the north western part of the country; the point of the thread was slightly different. Due to the media attention the Khap Panchayats have been at last forced to move to restricting men and putting them in quarantine. Which is a big first step towards combating the menace.

The second post was about how the men of this country have now begun carrying their disgusting behavior abroad and have begun shaming us in International Fora.
