@Pooja avem Tanya,

Is manch ne hume yeh sari bhasha se parichit hone ka saubhagya diya hain.

Hindi ek sampurna bhasha hain jo apne desh ki sankriti mein anekta mein ekta ka abhas prayan karti hain. Woh apne desh ki atma hain aur atyant madhur bhasha hain.

Ab ap hi bataye aiseme jab achese rashtra bhasha bolne ka avsar prapt ho to aisa avsar hum kaise gava sakte hain?Big smile.

Tanya - I have had good fortune of reading some of Munshi Premchand's English translated stories and even one of his novels.

I have read below ones, highlighted in red and loved them immensely.

His Work

Famous Stories:-
Nashaa, Shatranj ke khiladi, Poos ki rat, Atmaram, Boodhi Kaki, Bade Bhaisahab, Kafan, Bade Ghar ki beti, Udhar ki Ghadi, Namak ka Daroga, Dikri ke Rupai.

Famous Novels:- Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Kaayakalp, Manorma, Nirmala, Pratigya, Rangbhoomi, Sevasadan, Vardaan, Gaban, Premashram, Mangalsootra

As a little child, i remember watching Nirmala on Doordarshan, but as I said I was too little to remember the story now. He is a great Hindi writer for sure.I wish I could find more of his work translated in English.

Thanks for listing out some of the greats of Hindi literature here.

adarniya Rani avem Bhavi

Next lesson

If no one else is going to learn, atleast I am learning or re learning Hindi

Verbs

Main kaam kar rahe hoon [ kaam kar raha hoon= I am working = present tense]

Main kaam karne wali hoon [ karne wali hoon = I will be working = future tense]

Main kaam kar hi thi [ kaam kar rahi thi = I was working = past tense]

Kaam karna = to work

In hindi, there is a gender for everything, for living as well as non living thing. And that is where a lot of non hindi speaking people have problems

Table has a gender, chair has a gender and even a window has a gender. I am not sure if there is a cheat sheet for knowing the gender. It comes with practice I am guessing ? Unless my expert students know about it.

So for a few non living things =

Mez [table] = yeh mez achi hai [female]

kursi [chair ] = yeh kursi bahut achi hai [ female]

khidki [window] = yeh khidki ka rang itna acha nahi nahi [ male]

gend [ball] = yeh gend kafi badi hai [ female]

and if you like to read sher o shayari few oft repeated/used words

Aankhein= eyes [plural]

Aankh = eye [singular]

Muskan/Hansi = smile

Lab/hoonth= lips

Chehra = face

Zulfe [maybe its urdu word Tongue], baal= hair

Gardan [-surahi daar gardan] = neck [ I hope this is not such a rarely used word...mera mazak mat udana please Wink]

And my personal favourites=

Payal = not sure if there is an english word for that,,,ah yes anklet

Chudiya/ Kangan= Bangles

Jhumke = earings

Mangtika = this is a tough one..I kept adding jewelery, magar iske liye googly karna padega !!!

Angothi = Ring

Bichiya = Ring worn in the toes

Kamarband= a necklace kind of thing worn in the kamar  [waistband I think]

Mala= Necklace/Chain

Gehne =Jewellery

Bindi/tika= this is again tough !!!

Mehendi = Henna [one of my fav Wink]

Laal= Red Color

Gulabi = Pink Color

Kaale = Black Color

Neela= Blue Color

Safed = White Color

Kal ho na Ho

Now, if we talk abt aaj kal aur kal - yes kal aur kal

[There was a famous movie which had the Raj Kapoor family playing the three generations= kal aaj aur kal =

Kal = Prithvi Raj Kapoor
Aaj=  Raj Kapoor
Kal= Randhir Kapoor = the three generations played their part depicting

Yesterday , Today and Tomorrow

In hindi, tomorrow is also kal and yesterday is also kal

Aaj= Today

Kal= Yesterday or Tomorrow depending on the context it is used in.

Parso = Day after Tomorrow

Ab kal milenge= I will see you tomorrow

[ kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai,
  chahe meri diary ho ya hindi sikhane ka prasang
  aapke sivay koi aur in pannon mein jhakta nahi hai
  pata nahi yeh meri khushkismati hai
  ya aapki bad kismati Tongue
]

Thanks Bhavi
