She told herself there was nothing to be scared of - it was her imagination at play here. Even Hari Prakashji had left for the day - oh, what would Hari Prakashji have thought of them today... "Abhi yeh waqt nahi hai, yeh sab sochne ka!", she admonished herself. Her eyes widened as she caught sight of the shadow on the wall - this was not her imagination any more! There was someone in the house. Her first thoughts flew to the man who had tortured her over the period of time when Arnavji was kidnapped... No, it couldn't be him... It just couldn't...
She prayed to Devi Maiyya again and walked out to the pool side. The trees loomed over again over her head and she could hear them swaying in the heavy winds. She picked up the nearest item that could help her - a pot! - and shouted "Kaun hai? Kaun hai wahan?" The shadow stopped and turned - as if thinking something... and then it suddenly disappeared!
"Hey Devi Maiyya, yeh sab kya ho raha hai? Sach hi kaha humne - darne se toh behtar hai ki hum Taj Mahal dekh lete. Aur woh Laad Governor? Pata nahi kahan honge, kis haal mein honge, itni baarish mein woh bhi - aisi raat ko car mein akele jaane ki kya zaroorat thi? Aaah!" She shouted as the shadow was visible once again. "Dekhiye... aap... aap yahan se chale jaiye... Mere pati abhi aate honge - aur woh... woh aapka kya haal karenge aap nahi jaante! Samajh gaye na aap? Chale jaiye yahan se!" The shadow seemed to flicker... and then faded away suddenly.
She gave a sigh of relief and walked back into her room and locked the doors firmly. She was soaked through but managed to find a towel to wipe herself off - but she could see nothing around to change into. As she felt her way around and got to the door, she could see the crystals from the sari he had bought for her twinkling at her. She picked it up, and looked at it. She could just wear it till the time the power came back. Anyway it was not like he would know about it - he was away somewhere. Just when she was petrified - "hmph, hamesha ke tarah jab unki zarurat hoti hai toh woh kabhi nahi hote. Laad Governor kahin ke!" She quickly changed, wearing the sari in a rough way. And that's when it happened again - the footsteps!
This time she could hear them much closer - "Lekin tum aise darr nahi sakti! Usse kya hoga? Jo bhi hai, Devi Maiyya tumhare saath hai", she told herself. She looked around - she could see nothing that she could use as a weapon. "Humne kaha tha na", she shouted. "Humare pati aate hi honge..." She stopped, as she heard the footsteps right behind her. She shut her eyes, not wanting to face the final truth of what was going to happen. Her memories were all of him - just as they had been on the day she had fallen off the cliff - of their moments together, of the moments that they would not have now, of everything they were losing... Her eyes filled with tears as she realised how much she wanted all of it - the life with him, her husband...
"Khushi?", said a well known honeyed voice behind her. "Khushi??" The volume increased in alarm. She turned around with a jerk. There he was - standing there, wet from the rain, his eyes sweeping her face in concern. With a sob of relief, she ran, hurtling into his arms, clinging to him as she cried. "Aap theek hain na Arnavji?", she asked. "Hum bahut pareshan ho gaye the aur phir yeh..." her voice trailed off and she looked up at him. "Aap hi yahan pe ghoom rahe the? Mujhe darane ke liye?" She pushed away in indignation from him and said "aap aaj subah se bahut hi zyada badtameezi kar rahe hain", and started to walk away.
She could suddenly feel him catch her hand again, and pull her - like he had done a million times, leaving bruises on her wrists. She was pulled extremely close to him, and could feel herself blushing again so she collided with him. Her arm went around her waist, and she felt like every inch of her was on fire, feeling him holding her through her sari. She could feel the same tingling sensation go down her spine and wanted to shudder, while her heart beats increased pace - dhak dhak, dhak dhak, dhak dhak...
She glanced up to see him smirk at her - "toh tumne kya kaha tha, Khushi? Tumhara pati ghar aa raha hai? Lekin tum toh mujhe pati nahi maanti, hai na? Toh kiski baat kar rahe the tum?" "Haan, hum nahi maante - maine sirf usko, mera matlab aapko.. mera matlab hai woh jo aap the..." She felt a finger descend on her lips. "Sssh, Khushi. Tum bahut kuch bhool rahi ho. Bahut hi zyada. Yeh gift jo tumhe nahi chahiye tha, usko tumne abhi pehna hai. And tum par kaafi jachta bhi hai, is andhere mein bhi. And... kuch aur bhi tha na? Sirf kuch der pehle? Koi saude ki baat?"
Her eyes widened and her mouth formed an O as she realised - she had fulfilled the conditions of the bet they had laid out that evening. She pushed away from him - "Yeh galat hai. Aise haalat the ki..." "A deal is a deal, Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada", he said, with a smug smirk, and an emphasis on the last two words. "Ab bolo - kya tum saude ki baat rakhogi? Ya phir tum darr jaogi?" "Hum nahi maante ki aap jeete hain." "Achcha?" "Haan... Aapne waise bhi yeh sab jaan boojhke kiya taaki..." She was rudely interrupted as he pulled her close once again. "Lekin main maanta hoon, ki main jeet chuka hoon", he said as he trailed a finger down her cheek. "First of all, tum chilla chilla ke keh rahi thi - mere pati, mere pati..." His hand moved down to her neck... She shivered... "Next tum daudti hui meri baahon mein aayi jaise humne tey kiya tha..." His hands moved almost lazily to her shoulders... She shuddered silently.. "And then - tumne mujhse kaha - aap theek hai na? Kyun Khushi? Kya farak padta hai?" His hand had now moved to her back - dangerously close to the dori of her blouse, but his eyes had never left her face.
"Farak nahi padta hai", she feebly mumbled. "Yeh koi jeet nahi hai..." "Jhooth." One hand moved again to her waist holding her tight. "Nahi... woh..." She became incoherent as his hand began untying her dori... "Aap... mujhe... main..." She looked up, and saw his lips crashing down on hers... resisting at the beginning, and finally giving in with a sigh to something that had just been pending too long. Her eyes shut themselves and she gave way finally to all her pent up emotions. Suddenly she felt his grip loosen and opened her eyes to look at him. He was smiling at her, with affection and love. "Kaha tha na maine Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada? Main manvake rahoonga." As he reached out for her again, and picked her up like he always did, she replied, "Aapse jhagadne ka kya fayda? Aapko hamesha lagta hai ki aap hi jeete hain." He put on the bed and moved closer, "Iss baar bhi main hi jeeta hoon. Tumhe." - and watched in amusement as her colour fluctuated wildly with her blush, matching her sari, her eyes turning molten with the desire he wanted to see, finally reflecting in them...
