Cinema: Life and death in Fiji

THE film Table No. 21 has an interesting concept that keeps you engrossed in your seat for two hours. The story moves quickly and you won't even want to visit the toilet for fear of missing the action. It's unfortunate that unlike in India, we don't get a 10-minute interval during movies.

The film begins with a young couple, Vivaan (Rajeev Khandelwal) and his wife, Siya (Tena Desae), winning an all-expenses-paid trip to Fiji to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. There, they meet resort owner Mr Khan (Paresh Rawal), who gives them an opportunity to take part in his Internet game show and win 10 million Fijian dollars (RM17 million). All they have to do is answer eight questions and complete eight tasks. The only condition of the game is: "If you lie, you die."

The couple, who are facing financial problems, accept the conditions, never anticipating the kind of troubles they will face.

Paresh hogs the limelight and this movie comes after the stupendous success of his earlier movie, Oh My God! (which was banned here). He sports a stylish bald look and is charming and dangerous at the same time. Paresh acts like he is the lord of Fiji. I suppose this is because his character is supposed to be rich and powerful.

The stars who play the young couple are not well-known. The hero has hosted the popular game show Deal Ya No Deal and has several films such as  Aamir and Shaitan to his credit. He looks like the late Rajesh Khanna in some scenes and is likely to get more offers after the release of Table No. 21, which is doing well at the box office.

The heroine is pretty and acts well. She also looks good in a bikini during a song sequence.

What a lovely way to showcase Fiji. Makes one wonder why the Malaysian tourism authorities don't sponsor Bollywood producers to shoot films on our islands. Even palm oil gets a bad name in Indian movies, but nothing is being done to correct false impressions.

The movie has a strong message in the end, but it won't be right to spoil it for you by telling what it is. Aditya Dutta should be praised for choosing such an unusual story to drive home the message. He also doesn't let the songs interfere with the telling of his story. Only one song is picturised as sung by the couple as they cavort on the beach in Fiji. The rest play in the background as the story progresses.

With such bold themes as in Table No. 21, Hindi movies are headed in the right direction. Go watch this one.

Rajeev Khandelwal and Tena Desae play the lovely couple willing to bet on their future for money.

THE first Bollywood movie Table No. 21 shot entirely in Fiji has raked a worldwide gross box office earning of $F7.03million.

Confirming this in an interview yesterday, the director for Eros Pacific, one of the producers of the film Jack Raniga said Table No. 21 has been appreciated by audience for its content and entertainment with a message.

"This combined with performances by Paresh Rawal and Rajiv Khandelwal in exotic locations of Fiji and the movie has been well received," Mr Raniga said.

He said the film would be screening until today and then the screening would depend on the release traffic of new films.

Mr Raniga said the movie was released in over 1200 screens worldwide.

Meanwhile, the much anticipated film, 3G, which was also shot in Fiji will be released worldwide on March 15.

The movie, a project of EROS subsidiary Next Generation films, features Bollywood heartthrob Neil Nitin Mukesh and actress Sonal Chauhan.

Also, 40 local extras will feature in the film with several of them in speaking roles.

The film was shot in Fiji for 50 days and involved some stunts and spine-chilling sequences.

Some of the film sequences were shot at the luxurious Denarau Island, Suva, Pacific Harbour and Sigatoka Town.

The film is co-directed by Sheershak Anand and Shantanu Ray Chibber.

Tena Desae: An honour to work with Paresh Rawal

IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 23, 2013]

Model turned actress Tena Desae, who made her acting debuted in 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel', has again spread her charm in the movie 'Table no. 21'. Starring opposite Rajeev Khandelwal and Paresh Rawal, she has come a long way, she admits.

Being new to the Bollywood fraternity and one who does not know any one in particular, Tena, in fact, considers the film sets as her canvas and her co-stars as her teachers.

The young actress feels that she has been very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such talented actors. More than any one she feels that she was blessed to get an opportunity to work with the veteran actor, Paresh Rawal.

"It was great to work with Pareshji, he extremely talented. The experience and skill he has is commendable. I take it as an honour to work with him," remarked Tena who was excited to work with the ace actor and learn from him.
