I thought this would be like the very last epi of the season or something...hmmm...wonder how else they will shift things around in the book.

Btw I got tired and wiki-ed book 4 to know what happens...lol...so there is NO TYRION in the book AT ALLπŸ˜•...which spurs me to speed through many chaptersπŸ˜†...I've heard book 5 is better cuz it atleast gets the story back to the main characters...book 4 has some interesting bits but very sparingly...Martin veers off into other slightly pointless storylines in many ways...although yeah there are the usual shocking deaths...the one I read about does sound pretty sad

I didn't read spoilers for book 5 though cuz I actually want to read thatπŸ˜†

I doubt if this epi 7 is supposed to be that big event... cos it is too early for that.. it's raining and cold in a lot of places in the book na..maybe something else..

@Book 4 ...what no Tyrion at all?!...Insane! I haven't even begun reading properly...now I feel like skipping through stuff too...πŸ˜†

Book 5 is Dance of Dragons na...going by the name it should have more of Dany at least...that should be something to look out for.

Oh but it is only for the whole crossing the river chapter that they mention so much about the rain in the books...unless they change something...but to me this sounds like the Red Wedding chapter...anyways let's see.

LOL yeah NO Tyrion in book 4...but some interesting Arya related stuff in bits and pieces...and in a sense Cersei gets a big blow by the end of the book too but overall the side storylines in Dorne and the Iron Islands really weren't needed to be given as much footage as Martin gave them I guess.

I think there isn't any Dany in book 4 eitherπŸ˜†...but yeah book 5 brings them all back into focus I guess...I wonder when GRRM will release the next book cuz it seems to take him MINIMUM 5 years to release a book...however will the HBO series manage to stay on track then? Unless they start splitting each book into two seasonsπŸ˜†

*DEXTER SPOILERS*

@Shumiii...Hey hope you're done with exams n all :D...so I caught up with Dexter episodes..Louis's end was so disappointing. More of an evolution in Deb...coming to terms with the fact that her brother is a killer, she is obviously not comfortable with it, but she can probably understand it to some extent.. that particular scene where she tells Dex, that she needs to protect Harrison from Dexter, someone needs to do that...was such a dead ringer to the scene in BB haina?..lol..where Skyler tells Walt someone needs to protect the family from the great Heisenberg. That strip club owner Sirko face off with Dexter was alright...and it seems like he will pop up again soon enough, but I highly doubt he will disclose Dexter's identity outside. I wonder what will happen with Hannah...will he really kill her or not...

GoTians!!! πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€— How's it going for everyone here? Just got back from a fortnight of school retreat earlier today, and dropping in with a hello now!

Also, I started watching BB S3 one of the initial evenings I was there (got 5 episodes done) but then the rules and routine there was getting real tight and I couldn't follow up. But I was telling Nur on the CC, I plan to catch up on OUAT this week for sure, and BB on that list. Since school isn't going to be jackass right after the very happening (work-wise) retreat!

Mazzy!! πŸ€— How's it going? I've finished with my exams now...thanks for asking, btw. Busy with my new job though. I've also caught up with all the Dexter epis now and I totally agree that the way in which they decided to off Louis was so very anti-climactic, to say the least. Why even bother building up his curiosity and growing animosity with Dex only to have him killed by another villain at the end? OMG yes! That scene where Deb tells him that someone needs to protect Harrison from him was very reminscent of BB - that's what instantly popped into my mind as well! Actually, even the character of Isaak sort of reminds me of Gus, except y'know, he's not nearly as subtle or awesome...Deb's reaction has been interesting so far...Jennifer has been acting her guts out - just fabulous! But I didn't think that we'd ever see her reach the point where she's actually ordering Dex to go out and kill someone, despite knowing of their murderous ways. Not a fan of the Hannah character (I don't buy that Dexter could fall so hard for her because she "accepts" him; that's BS - he's said the same thing for Lilah, Lumen, Prado, and even Trinity), but I guess she was ultimately brought in to cause some kind of conflict between Dexter and the one person that he really does love, Deb (in a sisterly way, of course). This season's been a hit or a miss so far and the next half of epis should determine overall quality of s7.

EDIT: Love your sigs!

Heyy yea it's going ok...nice! @ new job :D   @Isaac...LOL..it's his accent that gets your attention most of the time right? πŸ˜†.. @Jennifer..absolutely she has been wonderful to watch..the way Deb almost had Dexter on a leash and then let go of him...but still has his back, cos she is also linked to everything. @Hannah...yea I ain't a fan either.. and her story of killing her husband, definitely lying πŸ‘ŽπŸΌ.. @Dex falling for her...I guess it's like how they titled the latest episode 'Chemistry'...πŸ˜†..nothing much really apart from the hormones πŸ˜†, Dex is just bringing up reasons to either kill her or not to kill her, as it stands now.. Deb ordering him to do what he does was a surprise, never thought it would happen yea. after the season premiere final scene, this was the other scene that had the surprise element. Yea this season is a very mixed...but maybe they will end it properly...lots of storylines, Hannah, Isaac, then Le Guerta ..and somehow I get the feeling either Quinn or Angel are gonna die.. lol.

@sigs...tumblr ki jai ho ..hehe..Jesse's emotional issues..   I see you have peekaboo back..aww..πŸ˜†

In the Trenches with the Special Effects Team

Jonathon Barrass
Special Effects Floor Supervisor
Wolf/Dragon Units
UK/Iceland

Jonathon 'Jona' Barrass and I sat down this week between takes on a scene from Ep 309 (directed by David Nutter) to talk about his work on the show. We are perched on the edge of some electrical kit boxes in a field near Saintfield just outside Belfast. After a week of rain, everyone is reveling in the sunshine – apart from the crowd of Wildings who are running across the ground in heavy furs.

How did you find yourself in SFX?

A friend of mine was working on HBO's 'Band of Brothers' in the SFX department, and I went along one day to lend a hand and show my face. I had no formal training so to speak, but with a military and engineering background, it meant I was used to the technical side and the fast pace. The military definitely helped with that.

You've worked on a lot of action movies, 'Die Another Day,' 'Casino Royale,' 'Batman Begins,' and five of the 'Harry Potter' films, do you prefer TV or movies?

Well, 'Harry Potter' particularly was very similar. All the outdoor elements with the wind, rain and smoke. Very similar indeed. But in the end I came back to TV because I prefer it. The pace is so much faster, and that suits me, plus with this show it still feels like a film when you see the finished product.

On 'Game of Thrones,' each department faces some pretty big challenges, what would you say is the biggest for the SFX team?

I would say the biggest challenge on a show like this would be filming different episodes with different directors out of order and all at the same time. Everything can change on a daily basis. We plan of course, but really it's working out day to day how we are going to make things work and match to any filming we may have done already. It may be raining one day and sunny the next and you just never know.

We have the best back up team, our guys in the workshop are some if the best engineers you can imagine. They send us things to play with, and we break them and send them back, but the atmospherics, the rain the smoke and the fire. We always have that on board the trucks and ready to go, depending on what the directors need.

What is your favourite element to play with?

I do like fire. I've been asked to do 20-foot rings of fire, with flames that reach 20 feet in the air. The firemen and I are great friends now, because first and foremost it's got to be safe. I don't think many people realize that every fire you see, campfire, the columns in the throne room, it's all SFX. It has to burn the same way all day. It's really tiny things you'd never notice if it's right - something as simple as ripples in the water, that has to be the same every take, because otherwise people do notice when it's wrong.

What would you say has been the biggest single challenge so far?

(we pause here as David calls a take and the Wildings jump a 4-foot wall)

Technically speaking, the flaming sword was definitely a process, in terms of getting it to work. We have these amazing stunt guys and CC Smiff who is a Sword Master, swings the swords so fast it takes a lot not to get the flame to go out. Laurence Harvey in the workshop turned this bit of aluminium into this flaming sword that ignites from nothing. It's amazing. I think more than anything, I'm looking forward to seeing that fight scene play out.

Then next week, we have this huge challenge coming up with a massive amount of gas. There may be some burning; there may be a lot of burning, in fact. We have these giant gas tankers you see on the roads, and we can empty that in 20 minutes – gone, so we've got to set that up, make it safe and make it work.

Looking back through everything we've seen on the screen, is there one thing you look at and think – yes, nailed it?

For me, it was last year on Ep 2.09, "Blackwater." Even though it never stopped raining in the quarry, and Neil Marshall and Sam McCurdy threw stuff at us everyday, it was the best. Down at Banbridge we had everything going on, air canons, water canons, water tanks, we had ships' masts falling into water and stunt guys running everywhere. It was amazing.

Favorite Character?

Tyrion, definitely – everything he does is just brilliant.

Any advice for people who are interested in joining the SFX world?

Well firstly, there are two types – the Workshop and the Physical.

There isn't a single way of getting into it really. There are courses you can do in model-making and engineering that are good if you want to work in workshop, designing things and being behind the scenes. Engineering particularly is great, but to be on set, to do the physical stuff – well there's no real training for that, it's just experience. Being good at technical things helps, and it can get pretty dirty. A lot of people start in the workshop and then try their hand on set, learning how it all works and just figuring it out. You've got to be imaginative, to be able to figure out how to get it done. It's not glamorous, but then it can take you to places you'd never dream you'd end up going.

The weird part thing is that Isaak is meant to be a Russian mobster yet he speaks with a Brit accent...lots of ppl are also curious over the nature of the relationship b/w Isaak and Viktor - was he his brother, son, lover?  @Jennifer..absolutely she has been wonderful to watch..the way Deb almost had Dexter on a leash and then let go of him...but still has his back, cos she is also linked to everything. It's interesting how she went from utter shock and disgust at the reveal of his serial killer status, to trying to cure him one episode later, to almost accepting what he does and backing him up by protecting him from Laguerta, to actually ordering a kill herself - quite a transformation...I only wish it had taken longer than just seven epis though. @Hannah...yea I ain't a fan either.. and her story of killing her husband, definitely lying πŸ‘ŽπŸΌ.. @Dex falling for her...I guess it's like how they titled the latest episode 'Chemistry'..nothing much really apart from the hormones πŸ˜† lol, true! Except there ain't a whole lot of chemistry I'm sensing b/w them either; Dex's sudden love-like feelings for her seem to have come straight out of the blue - there was barely any build up to this...Dex is just bringing up reasons to either kill her or not to kill her, as it stands now.. Deb ordering him to do what he does was a surprise, never thought it would happen yea. after the season premiere final scene, this was the other scene that had the surprise element. Yeah, they do have a lot going on this season, don't they? Multiple arcs and all...seriously hoping they're leading somewhere good. I have a feeling that Laguerta will do some investigating on her own in the coming epis and conceal some of her findngs from Deb if she at all suspects Dexter. I think Quinn's gonna die too, but I hope Angel makes it...Y'know what would be possibly a decent ending is if everyone discovers Dexter's secret by their own accord at the end, leaving Dex and Deb little option but to be on the run or to have a trial.

@sigs...tumblr ki jai ho ..hehe..Jesse's emotional issues..   I see you have peekaboo back..aww..πŸ˜† Hehe yeah! Loved this epi and Jesse's adorkable expressions...aww, I really wanted to see that kid from 'Peek-a-boo' back in the show just to see how he's doing...
