Damon Salvatore, the elder son of vampire hunter Giuseppe had always been the "bad" son whereas younger brother Stefan was always the favourite for their father. Due to his father's negligence along with Katherine's constant preference of Stefan over him has caused an emotional barrier between not only his brother but also everyone else. That is, until came along Elena Gilbert-the only one that can bring out the humanity in the so called devil.

Elena Gilbert, the daughter of Isobel and John Gilbert has always kept to herself ever since her "parents" [the ones who adopted her] passed away in a car accident. She's never been able to live life the way a normal teenager would since she's had to take care of her younger brother Jeremy the entire time. Damon is the only one who can bring out the real teenager in her. He teaches her how to have fun and actually live life.
