Ahem woke in bed the following morning to find that he still had his arms round Gopi as if to stop her lashing out at him. Somehow during the night after their talk they moved onto the bed and slept in that same position. Gently he disentangled himself from her and headed for the bathroom.
She stirred a short time after and sat up in bed. She viewed the utter devastation she had caused and felt'.. Nothing. Whereas previously she would have felt bed, today she showed no remorse. She got up and went to the wardrobe and took out her clothing and reached out to take out Ahem's clothing but held back. She shut the wardrobe and walked to the bathroom just as Ahem came out. He wiped his face with the towel and looked at her. Waiting to see her acknowledge him and smile at him in her shy way like she normally did. She looked at him and quickly went into the bathroom leaving him staring after her. If he thought that things had been sorted out then he was wrong. He was beginning to be troubled. When she came out of the bathroom he questioned her.
"Gopi? I thought that everything had been settled last night. Why are you still angry?"
"Ahemji. My anger has dissolved towards you to a point. But there are still issues between you and me that are there. Besides. I don't want to talk about it now. Maaji will be waiting for me." She reached towards the dressing table and then realised that she had broken all her bangles and cosmetics when she had thrown them. Luckily her kajal and liptick were nearby.
Once ready she brushed past Ahem leaving him looking at the broken bangles on the floor and wondering why he was getting a feeling of deja vu.
Gopi finished performing the aarti and turned and offered the aarti tray to the family so that they may take the blessings. Her eyes belied the feelings of anger she had felt and she passed from one to the other. Standing at the edge was Rashi, who was in her own little world. Pleased with the way things had gone. She could not wait to inflict more pain to Gopi and she smiled to herself. Gopi looked at Rashi and instead turned and placed the thali at the foot of the mandir took her leave and went to the kitchen. Rashi stared after her open mouthed and then jumped on the opportunity to show Gopi in a bad light.
"Mummyji." She spoke, putting on a sorry face. Hetal was just as surprised as Rashi. She looked at Kokila as if to ask what was going on. Kokila shook her head and indicated to Hetal that she would like to speak to her. Kokila turned to Rashi.
"Rashi. Go and help Gopi to make breakfast."
"Yes, Kaki." And she headed off for the kitchen.
She found Gopi kneading the flour. Stopping at the door she took stock and went in.
"Gopi? What was the meaning of that." She blustered in. "Why didn't you offer me prasad?" Gopi pointedly ignored her and carried on kneading. She watched Gopi's back and an irritation built up in her. "That Gopi gawar was beginning to ignore her a lot more these days." She thought to herself. "She needed to be brought down a peg or two."
"Gopi," she spoke aloud. "Isn't it good that Ahemjiju is reunited with his first love? You can see the love he has for her in his eyes." She stopped to see the effect her words were having. None at all. She walked over to Gopi. "Gopi. I am your well-wisher. I cannot see you unhappy. Why don't you let Ahemjiju get on with his life? That way he would be happy and so would you." Gopi finished the kneading and handed the bowl to Rashi.
"Puris need making." She stated and then got ready to start the next item. Rashi put the bowl aside and shadowed Gopi.
"Are you that selfish that you cannot see the pain you are causing?" Rashi asked in exasperation. Gopi looked at Rashi and slammed the pot she was holding on the worktop.
"I am selfish." She spoke in a low voice. "You are the one who has been running around here sucking the very happiness out of this house, from this family and you call me selfish! Well let me tell you a few home truths Mrs Rashi Modi. I know exactly what you have been up to since the day we set foot in here. As my sister I always gave you the benefit of the doubt and stood up for you and forgave your mistakes but no more. I have had it up to here with your so called tricks. Do you ever stop to think of the consequences?" Rashi took a step back. She was not used to being spoken in this way by Gopi, who by now was beginning to vent her anger on the very people who had used her, abused her and let her down.
"I' I don't know what you are talking about." She bluffed, knowing full well that the look in Gopi's eyes spoke of everything. Gopi glared at her and Rashi went back one more step.
"You know full well what I am talking about. Where shall I start? The beginning when you lied to me of what was written in the letter that Ahemji wrote to me before marriage. When you told me to clean Ahemji's laptop with soapy water. Setting fire to the mandir in which Kakiji nearly died or the pressure cooker exploding which you carried out for which Maaji nearly threw you out of the house. I was a fool then to cover for you. You say you care for me? Where was that care when you dipped the carrots, that I was grating, in oil. You knew that the carrot would slip while I was grating it and injure my hand before the exam. And then in the exam you stalled and wasted time. What type of a sister does that?"
"Gopi. Don't bring up the past. What is done is done."
"Don't even try to cover up what you did." Gopi smiled dryly. "To think that it was me who asked maaji and kakiji to bring you back here after the accident. Me and Ahemji who placated and cajoled devarji to get back on good terms with you and still you never learnt. What did you want to achieve by going to the wedding knowing full well that it was Anitaji's wedding. What type of a sideshow were you expecting to see?" Rashi was feeling more and more uncomfortable as Gopi's words took hold. She was rumbled and if she did not take care she would be out on her ear.
"Look you can't talk to me like this. I am your elder. You should treat me with respect."
"Respect?" Gopi practically sneered. "You don't know the meaning of the word. In order to gain respect you have to earn it."
"I think I need to give mummy a call. Get her to speak to you. Make you see sense." In her haste, her hands shook and she dropped her phone on the floor. "Now look at what you have made me do. You unpar gawar. Mummy was not wrong. You came into this world to misery and you have caused misery wherever you have been. Nobody cares for you."
"That's where you are wrong Rashiji. I have a family who love me."
"A family perhaps. But Ahemjiju will never love you."
" I will say to you now. Never, ever come in between me and my husband again. I am no longer the doormat you want me to be. But who do you love, Rashiji. It is certainly not devarji. I have seen the way he has doted on you and you have always pushed him away. So tell me?"
"I would like to know, too." Jigar stood in the doorway with the family. Rashi felt the ground leave her feet. She began to perspire slightly. She looked at Gopi. Imploring her to save her. Gopi picked up the flour she had already kneaded and handed it to Rashi.
"I asked you to make the puris." She walked past her and then turned back. "Just one thing. I have always looked upon you as my sister. As of today I disown you. I don't have to answer to you and you don't look towards me to help you. Got that?" Rashi was dumbfounded. She nodded. Gopi looked at Kokila. "Maaji if you don't mind. I would like to go to my room. I believe that there is some clearing up that needs to be done." Kokila nodded and the family made way for Gopi to leave and then turned to Rashi for answers.
