Ek Tha Tiger Takes Box Office Collections To A New High

Ek Tha Tiger has taken opening box office collections to a new high as it has collected 31-32 crore nett as per early estimates. Its a 40% jump from the previous record which was 22 crore nett approx set by Agneepath earlier this year.

Ek Tha Tiger has shattered records all over by recording capacity or near capacity houses all over on the widest release ever.

Mumbai will come in over 10 crore for the first time. CP Berar, Rajasthan and Nizam have all crossed the 1.50 crore barrier for the first time, it was only last year that these circuits crossed the 1 crore mark for opening day with Bodyguard. Mysore may also make it to the 1.50 crore mark.

The opening again proves that the action genre with a superstar on a big national holiday is unbeatable at the box office. When these three lethal combinations have come together it has proved to be record breaking over the last few years.

Ek Tha Tiger review

Cast:Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif
Director: Kabir Khan

More often than not, critiquing a Salman Khan starrer is like casting stones at an armoured combat vehicle. No matter how hard one tries to make a dent, it is doomed to be an exercise in futility. The fortified fighting machine on wheels trundles on regardless.

Ek Tha Tiger poses no such worries. A smartly scripted, crisply edited and stylishly mounted love story cloaked in the garb of an espionage thriller, it makes enough sense for the most part to blow away the air of scepticism.

While it is essentially a genre film designed to carpet bomb the audience with all the known tricks of the crowd-pleasing trade, it distances itself appreciably from the established norms of the action-packed Salman Khan movies that have raked in big bucks in recent years.

Ek Tha Tiger delivers implausible superhero stunts galore. However, its punch lines are kept on a leash and the romantic bonding between the hero and his lady love, which drives much of the film, isn't allowed to degenerate into treacly kitsch.

But no, that isn't to suggest that Salman Khan fans would have reason to feel shortchanged. He is his usual swaggering, larger-than-life self in Ek Tha Tiger, performing gravity and death-defying acts while romancing a pretty woman whose love for the stars in the heavens makes her the perfect Yash Raj Films heroine.

WantedDabanggReadyBodyguard and now, Ek Tha Tiger – the failsafe formula appears as enduring as Salman's eponymous secret agent who scours the world in search of enemies of the nation and dispatches them to the devil without breaking into a sweat.

Acting wise, the superstar delivers no major surprises barring the sustained restraint that he exercises in fleshing out the persona of a tough spy who has no real name until it is revealed right at the end of the film. The role is tailor-made for Salman and he goes through the motions without missing a trick.

He is aided, of course, by the no-nonsense screenplay (jointly authored by director Kabir Khan and journalist-turned-lyricist Neelesh Misra). The believable twists and turns that it throws up all the way through to the end keep the pot on the boil even when the heat threatens to dip.

The action sequences, shot on locations as far apart as Zakho in northern Iraq, Istanbul Dublin and Havana, are invested with a high cool quotient. Ek Tha Tiger has stunts that come close to taking your breath away. It's a Salman Khan vehicle after all.

Filmed on locations around the world, including parts of the world where Hindi cinema has rarely been to before, the story zeroes in on a RAW agent called Tiger who is sent to Dublin to investigate the mysterious ways of an anti-missile technology expert of Indian origin, Professor Anwar Jamal Kidwai (Roshan Seth in a cameo).

The scientist is suspected of passing on classified information to the Pakistani defence establishment. So the Indian spy befriends the part-time caretaker of his home, Zoya (Katrina Kaif) and his pugnacious pug (the dog is called Rocket).

No mission is impossible for our man Tiger, and once he marks out his territory and goes in for the kill, his foes, no matter how wily they are, end up in body bags.

However, in this tale of a valiant spy and his all-out war to save the woman he loves from the intelligence agencies of two nations, the outcome isn't wholly predictable. The hero takes uncharted detours to get to his eventual goal.

With Katrina Kaif paired with Salman for the first time since the debacle of 2008's Yuvraaj, the romantic track is given substantial footage in Ek Tha Tiger

When the spy struggles with the conflict between head and heart and weighs the pros and cons of falling in love with a girl as shadowy as him, the film tends to slow down a little. But such scenes are few and far between.

The narrative gets back into the swing of things quickly enough thanks to the sharply focussed screenplay.

With actors like Girish Karnad (as the RAW chief) and Ranvir Shorey (as Tiger's trusted operational aide) in the supporting cast, the Ek Tha Tiger gallery of characters rarely gets swamped out of the picture by the starry mannerisms of the male lead.

Ek Tha Tiger isn't what one whould rate as great cinema, but it isn't just harmless fun. The pacifist message dovetailed into its core lends the film a far greater degree of relevance than Bollywood spy thrillers generally strive for.

I am going with three and a half stars. Ek Tha Tiger has enough zing, visual and otherwise, to keep you in your seats for its runtime of a little over two hours.

'Ek Tha Tiger' review: A typical masala entertainer!

'Ek Tha Tiger' review: A typical masala entertainer!Gayatri Sankar

What would you expect when Salman Khan, Kabir Khan and Yash Raj Films team up- a super masala entertainer, right?

'Ek Tha Tiger' looked very promising prior to its release and the film does entertain you to an extent but also compels you to wonder if you truly want to ridicule your intelligence.

After 'Wanted', 'Dabangg' and 'Bodyguard', 'Ek Tha Tiger' - yet another Eid release of Salman Khan - might just make it to the Rs100 crore club, courtesy his incredible fan following and an intriguing first half. But the film sadly falls in the same trap like other Salman films which lack content.

Salman Khan plays Tiger, a code name given to him by Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) of India. But the role of an intelligence officer has been manipulated to the core to befit a masala entertainer!

After a successful mission in Iraq, Tiger is now entrusted with the task of collecting external intelligence by spying on a Trinity College Professor, who has apparently been approached by the ISI for sharing missile technology secrets.

Tiger flies down to Dublin, the Irish capital, to follow the Professor. And that is where he ends up meeting his ladylove (Zoya) Katrina Kaif, the professor's residence caretaker. Tiger introduces himself as Manish Chandra, a writer, and seeks her help in getting an appointment with the professor.

Zoya extends all possible help to a shelter-less Manish and befriends him. And that is when seeds of romance are sowed!

Though Tiger knows that he is on a mission and he dare not fall in love, he loses his heart to Zoya, who could act as a catalyst in providing information about the professor. Tiger is constantly reminded of his duties by Gopi (Ranvir Shorey), his colleague, not to lose his heart while on a mission but he does approve of Tiger's choice of a Bhabhi for him!

Zoya, who also happens to be a dance instructor, invites Tiger for a show and here is where you would find a twist in the tale!

After an incredible 'Kabul Express' and somewhat gritty 'New York', a masala entertainer like ETT wasn't expected from director Kabir Khan. Yash Raj Films has certainly spent a whopping amount on the exotic locations that are a treat to watch but haven't helped the film gain a cult status.

However, the film does have superbly directed action sequences, foot-tapping songs by Sohail Sen and Sajid-Wajid, and a tinge of Salman Khan's special comedy that does make you cheer.

And mostly importantly, though Salman and Katrina deny being in a relationship in real life, their chemistry onscreen looks every bit convincing. And the duo is an absolute delight to the eyes!

But over all, the film does disappoint you for it fails to deliver what it promised.

If you are a Salman Khan fan, you would love it for sure and the movie might rake-in the moolah because of the superstar! It will certainly entertain you if you leave your brains outside the theatre!

Ek Tha Tiger box office report: Salman Khan's spy thriller grosses Rs 150 crore!

Box Office report: Ek Tha Tiger bags Rs 150 crore!

Salman Khan continues to rule the cash counters with his spy film. But will he surpass Aamir Khan's insurmountable record?

It took Salman Khan only eight days to gross whopping Rs 150 crore at the box office – a figure many producers dream of, lust after and even revere. Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger, starring Sallu and Katrina Kaif, netted Rs 100 crore in the first four days of its release and now the film has crossed Rs 150 crore mark only to become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. His earlier films Dabangg ( Rs 147 crore) Bodyguard ( Rs148 crore) and Ready (Rs 122 crore) had already made Salman a promising box office draw, but Ek Tha Tiger has become the biggest grosser for Sallu.

With Rs 385 crore in its pocket, Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots sits at the top at the moment, but if Sallu's film continues to get the same response, at the same rate, Ek Tha Tiger is likely to create a new record too.

Clearly, Salman is ruling the roost at the BO at this moment, with filmmakers queuing up outside his house to benefit from his Midas touch.

Ek Tha Tiger effect: SFKTNP has dismal opening at Box Office

Updated: Friday, August 24, 2012, 16:09 [IST]

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (SFKTNP) starring Boman Irani and Farah Khan in leads has opened to dull response at the Box Office in India. This much-hyped movie was expected to start with a bang at the collection centres. Trade analyst feel that the business of the romantic-comedy film has been affected by Salman Khan's latest release Ek Tha Tiger, which has continued to do well in the second week.

Bela Sehagal's debut directorial venture has had a dismal beginning at the collection windows across the country. Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi has registered 35% to 50% occupancy in single screens in the country. The movie was expected to get opening at the multiplexes, where it had a very poor occupancy, which was ranging between 15% to 35%. Its business is expected to improve in evening shows.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi is a big budget movie and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the producer of the film had made sure that it has massive promotions with its lead actors Boman Irani and Farah Khan visiting many cities in the country. The promo videos and posters had created a lot of curiosity among the movie buffs. The makers of the film are yet to realise what went wrong with the movie.

However, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif's last week release Ek Tha Tiger, which had opened to an earth-shattering response in the first week, has continued to rock the viewers. The romantic-action thriller has become the first choice of the film goers in the second weekend too. It should be seen which of these two will top the weekend Box Office chart.
