Ek Tha Tiger roars at box office, Salman Khan's fourth consecutive Rs 100 crore hit in a row

Nandini Raghavendra, ET Bureau Aug 21, 2012, 06.00AM IST

(Unlike his last three blockbusters,…)

MUMBAI: Bhai ka picture ka chaar ticket dena," goes a man in his late-twenties, bending into the box-office window at a single screen theatre in Mumbai's Mahim area.

The man behind the counter stamps four tickets and hands it over without batting an eyelid; he's been witness to this kind of request for the past many years - and for the past five days during which Salman Khan's debut with Yash Raj Films' (YRF's) 'Ek Tha Tiger' ('ETT') has shattered the Rs100 crore barrier in collections, as per data provided by YRF.

Khan, 46, has hit bull's eye yet again, this time in the avatar of Avinash Singh Rathore, also known as Tiger. Unlike his last three blockbusters, Khan's latest—a non-typical Salman Khan action-romance flick—did not release traditionally on Eid but on Independence Day.

This is Salman's fourth Rs 100 crore in a row and his fifth big hit if one would count 'Wanted' in 2009, which fell some Rs 40 crore short of the Rs 100 crore club. Together, these five have grossed close to Rs 600 crore. And, of course, the ETT phenomenon—or rather another Salman wave—has just about only begun.

"There is an actor, a superstar and a phenomenon. Salman Khan is a phenomenon. He is beyond the film; he's an event. He takes the meaning of iconic to another level, a tsunami whose waves encompass the audience in his power. Watching ETT in a single theatre with that audience is another phenomenon," says film maker Karan Johar.

It's that connect with an audience that ranges from youth in the boondocks to the big cities that has landed him a bunch of endorsement contracts.

The brands range from Suzuki (bikes) to travel site Yatra (where Salman also has a stake); and there is Being Human, Salman's own apparel brand.

It's a streak for Salman, not too different from a similar phase another popular Bollywood actor Govinda went through, points out leading ad professional and author Santosh Desai.

"It's a phase when everyone cues into you for a different set of reasons. Khan has exaggerated playfulness, a comic-book view of turning a traditionally grim story and the audience connects with that," says Desai, who adds that the alpha male factor is (still) working fine.

Film makers and brand marketers will be wondering, though, how long Brand Salman can endure.

For one, his macho image has a lifespan. For another, controversies are not alien to Salman and a few from the past—like a decade-old hit-and-run case—could come back to take more than a little sheen off the brand.

So far, though, Salman has bounced back in style. The Being Human campaign was a masterstroke, reckons K V Sridhar, creative chief at Leo Burnett (besides the apparel brand, Being Human Foundation is an NGO focused on providing education and healthcare to those who can't afford it).

"It (Being Human) showed him as noble and likeable. So whilst on-screen he is the macho man, off-screen you see the approachable, soft side of him which as a combination works wonderfully for Brand Salman," adds Sridhar, pointing out that Being Human tshirts sell the most in B and C towns.

"In fact it's one of the most pirated brands today, which is a compliment in itself," he says. Nandini Dias, COO, Lodestar UM, a media agency, thinks with 'Being Human' Salman Khan has accomplished what no other star in India has managed so far.

"The real worth of a brand ambassador is known when people are willing to buy a product that has no other history or background except the star," says Dias.

That goodwill has been built over decades. "Salman has always had an unconditional fan following right from the beginning, irrespective of any other aspect, explains Prasoon Joshi, chairman & regional creative director for Asia Pacific, McCann Erickson.

"As far as true heroes go, I can only compare him to Rajnikant," he adds. As far as ETT director Kabir Khan is concerned, Brand Salman still has a lot of steam left.

B.O. update: 'Ek Tha Tiger' has historic, unparalleled start

By Taran Adarsh, August 15, 2012 - 17:15 IST
No adjective would be able to justify the mammoth, historic, unprecedented opening of the keenly-anticipated EK THA TIGER. Although a number of films have embarked on a thunderous start at the ticket window, the kind of hysteria being witnessed for EK THA TIGER is beyond belief, never witnessed before.

At places [Jaipur], police had to called... At several places, people garlanded Salman's pic on the hoardings... The sea of people outside every theatre cannot be described in mere words... It's pandemonium at single screens and also at plexes as Salman makes an entry in the movie... The Salmania is visible at every centre, every theatre.

It's a bit too early to predict the kind of business EK THA TIGER will generate on Wednesday, 15 August, but, one thing is certain: It will set new benchmarks in every circuit.

Box office report: Ek Tha Tiger grosses Rs 110 crore in six days

Anand J       Last Updated: August 22, 2012  | 16:41 IST

Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger has crossed the Rs 100-crore mark at the box office (grossing Rs 110 crore in six days), becoming the actor's fourth film on the trot to do so. The film released on a Wednesday (August 15, Independence Day) and took advantage of four holidays in its first six days at the box office, including the Eid holiday on Monday.

The collection from the extended weekend is estimated at around Rs 94 crore. Preliminary estimates put Monday's numbers at around Rs 16 crore.

Ek Tha Tiger has broken many records, including collections for the first day, first three days and first weekend. It also beat the record of Rs 100 crore in seven days set by Khan's own blockbusterBodyguard.

This week's collections will indicate how big the lifetime total could be.

It is still difficult to say whether the movie will cross the record of Rs 203 crore set by 3 Idiots. The Aamir Khan-starrer ran for many weeks and got a sizeable repeat audience. It grossed Rs 56 crore in its second week, while Salman Khan's Dabangg and Bodyguard, with lower repeat value, collected Rs 36 crore and Rs 20 crore respectively in their second weeks.

While 3 Idiots was a multiplex favourite, Salman Khan's fan base is bigger at single screens, where ticket prices are less than half of those at multiplexes. It has to sustain for a longer time than 3 Idiots to collect the same amount.

Most other films released before Ek Tha Tiger were crushed under the Salman Khan wave.

Previous releases, such as Jism 2 and Gangs of Wasseypur 2, have collected Rs 34 crore and Rs 19 crore from the box office so far. While Jism 2 can be called a successful film, local distributors in many states overpaid based on the hype it generated and lost money.

Gangs of Wasseypur 2 has done below-average business despite good reception from critics. From Wednesday onwards most of the screens across the Hindi film belt are showing Ek Tha Tiger, and other movies haven't collected much.

This Friday (August 24) will see the release of four films - The Expendables 2Delhi In A DayFrom Sydney With Love, and Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi

If Ek Tha Tiger holds up well, these films will find the going tough at the box office. Still, August 24 may be better for these films than August 31, when another superstar movie will be released - Disney-UTV's Akshay Kumar-starrer Joker. That means these four films will have to do most of their business in the first week as not many screens will be left for them when Joker is released.

Three other films are scheduled for release on August 31. With several big films lined up over the next month, these small films don't have many options either.

Note: All numbers are net domestic box-office collections. Net is gross box-office collections minus taxes applicable.

'Ek Tha Tiger' continues its winning streak, earns over Rs 137 crore in a week

Salman Khan is currently the undisputed ruler of the box office. His film 'Ek Tha Tiger" continues to shatter records and has raked weekly earnings of Rs 137.15 crore in India, according to a tweet posted by trade analyst, Taran Adarsh on Wednesday, August 22, 2012.

Although trade experts expected a decline post Eid, the film remained unstoppable and had a mammoth earning of Rs 16.31 crore on Tuesday. Looks like the film is a strong contender to beat the box-office record set by Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots."

Talking about the film's success, director Kabir Khan's wife and popular TV personality Mini Mathur told Rediff, "Kabir and I aren't worried about numbers. It's the response to the film we were eagerly waiting for. The other day, we went to the single screen theatres and the way people were reacting to the film was extremely reassuring."

Extremely pleased with the film's popularity, she continues, "Shooting in five different foreign countries in extreme weather conditions, handling two superstars -- Salman (Khan) and Katrina (Kaif) -- and making a film with an enormous budget was one tough ride but am glad it's all paying off."

'Dabangg' to 'Ek Tha Tiger': Salman Khan's ever rising box office graph

New Delhi: With 'Ek Tha Tiger', Salman Khan has proved his authority at the box office. 'Bodyguard' released in August, 2011, exactly one year ago, to packed houses. The initial collection of the film seemed as it's going to break all previous records, including that of Aamir Khan's '3 Idiots', but eventually the pace of 'Bodyguard' slowed. However, this doesn't seem to be the case with 'Ek Tha Tiger'. The film is almost on the brink of crossing the Rs 150 crore mark.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "#EkThaTiger *actuals* Wed 10.45 cr. Total: 147.60 cr nett. Crosses lifetime biz of #Dabangg [147 cr]. AMAZING!"

Now, it's 'Boidyguard' turn to see 'Ek Tha Tiger' surpassing its overall collection. 'Bodyguard' is one of those films which completely swept the box office in the first week, therefore Ek Tha Tiger's supremacy over it is not a small deal.

Salman Khan's latest blockbuster has earned Rs 137 crore in seven days, but the movie lacks a good storyline. If rumours are to be believed, the makers are planning a sequel too. Do you think Salman Khan's magic will work again?

The latest Salman Khan starrer is still going at a great speed. Earning close to Rs 10 crore on the 8th day shows the kind of enthusiasm 'Ek Tha Tiger' has generated among the audiences.

Surprisingly, 'Ek Tha Tiger' is doing well in the overseas market also, a territory that traditionally belonged to more sophisticated heroes such as Shah Rukh and Aamir.

There is a joke doing round on social networking sites that if this is the first Yash Raj film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark, then were they making films with wrong Khan in the past.

Salman's fourth entry into the exclusive Rs 100 crore club flaunts his powerful grip on the audience's pulse. 'Dabangg', 'Ready', 'Bodyguard' and 'Ek Tha Tiger', Salman evolved as a better crowd puller.

'Ek Tha Tiger' received better reviews than 'Bodyguard' and 'Ready' and the praise ensured more footfalls in the cinemas. However, the film is not like 'all time best' or 'best spy thriller ever seen', which just suggests what to expect from a really good Salman film in the future.
