Salman Khan is no James Bond: Kabir Khan

Director of Ek Tha Tiger, Kabir Khan speaks on his Salman Khan starrer spy film.

After Agent Vinod, Ek Tha Tiger is the recent spy thriller which is more of a love story that has been received well by Salman fans.

Director Kabir Khan didn't set out to make a James Bond though. In an exclusive interview with Times of India.com, Kabir said, "RAW agents are glamorized in Indian films. They don't wear fancy suits or drive sexy cars. They don't flaunt cool gadgets either. Even their accommodation in anything but fancy. I have tried to keep Tiger as real as possible. Salman Khan is no James Bond in the film. Also, in Indian films, every hero is James Bond anyway. He fights with the goons singlehandedly and gets the girls. I wanted to keep the action as realistic as possible."

Ek Tha Tiger: Theatres ordered to reverse ticket hike

Earlier this month, we told you a majority of multiplexes had decided to hike the ticket prices of Yash Raj Films' Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger by nearly 12-16 per cent.

And while raising prices for certain films on special occasions isn't uncommon, they're supposed to come down after the first weekend. In this case, post Monday, August 20. However, most multiplexes will not slash ticket prices until Friday, August 24, which is the day Bela Sehgal's Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi hits theatres.

With areas housing more than one multiplex having seen a 12 per cent hike in ticket prices and those with fewer theatre options having witnessed an almost 16 per cent increase in major cities across the country, the latest decision has infuriated Yash Raj Films. On the night of Thursday, August 16, the production house has dispatched letters to multiplexes and single screens, ordering them to reverse the rates with immediate effect. According to a source close to the film, both Yash and Aditya Chopra feel the current hike in ticket rates of the film is not fair on the common man. Besides, when multiplexes have just slashed their rates because the audience has decreased, how can they again raise them going by a whim. YRF spokesperson confirmed the developments.

However, theatre owners seem to be in no mood to oblige, at least for now. Girish Wankhade, Deputy GM, Corporate Communications and Public Relations, Cinemax India Ltd, said they're not rolling back ticket rates in their chain of cinemas, even from August 20. Anand Vishal, Head of Operations, Fun Cinemas, said, "We will take a call only on Monday. However, we are unlikely to roll back the price in Mumbai at least." Their thoughts are echoed by several other theatre owners who've allocated as much as 95 per cent of their shows for the YRF film. A source from the trade seems to think theatre owners will have no choice but do exactly what YRF wants.

'Ek Tha Tiger' expected to break more records

Salman Khan does it again! After giving back-to-back super hits "Wanted", "Dabangg", "Ready" and "Bodyguard", he has hit the bull's eye once again with " Ek Tha Tiger" which has broken records of opening day collection by earning Rs.33 crore.

The romantic thriller released on Independence Day and trade pundits are expecting the collections to increase during the long weekend, thanks to Eid, which is Monday, and make more new records.

The film's cost is said to be above Rs.50 crore and "Ek Tha..." marks director Kabir Khan's third collaboration with Yash Raj Films after "Kabul Express" in 2006 and "New York" in 2009.

Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines, Mumbai, says the film has received the highest opening ever.

"Salman's movie 'Ek Tha Tiger' is doing very well all over. It has been the highest opening ever. In first two days, the film has collected around Rs.47 crore all over India. On the opening day, the film collected Rs.33 crore. It is the highest collection till date for any Indian film," Thadani told IANS.

"In Mumbai the film collected close to around Rs.17 crore on opening day. There is possibility that the film will break all records and collect Rs.200 crore," he added.

Vinay Choksey of VIP Exhibitors, Mumbai, seconds Thadani and said: "The film is expected to maintain the craze and the collections will go up during weekend."

The film that revolves around an Indian secret agent named Tiger collected almost Rs.17 crore on the second day.

Anant Verma, director and business head of DT Cinemas, says "'Ek Tha Tiger' opened with 98 percent occupancy".

"The movie is doing excellent business. There was a lot of hype about it because of which we have had 45 percent online and advance bookings," Verma told IANS.

"From families to couples, college students to working class came to watch the movie and they are liking it. We are waiting for the weekend and expecting increased footfalls," he added.

Salman, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer, romances Katrina (Zoya), an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent in the film.

"Ek Tha..." shows the tumultuous journey of the dark world of intelligence that forbids its soldiers from falling in love.

The story is by Aditya Chopra and the film's screenplay has been co-written by Kabir Khan and well-known journalist-turned-lyricist-writer Neelesh Misra.
