It is abnormal drooping of upper eyelid due to paralysis or defective development of the muscle called levator palpebrae superioris (LPS).

It is primarily a disease of eyelid muscle- levator palpebrae superioris. This muscle has function of raising eyelid normally and due to weakness/ paralysis it is unable to keep eyelid at desired upper level. Thus we see drooping eyelids and person suffering cannot keep up with normal activity.
Patients of diabetes, stroke, Mysthenia gravis or cancer are at risk of developing ptosis. It can develop at any age, as congenital- since birth or as a result of disease/ trauma. According to cause it can be unilateral or bilateral.
Though it is not a severe disease, it affects person's appearance & leads to emotional and social trauma to patient.
HOMOEOPATHY is an alternative medical science, which has good scope to treat ptosis depending upon type. It can cure paralysis of LPS muscle and improve general health of eye, without any side effects.

 TYPES AND CAUSES:
CONGENITAL PTOSIS: Commonest form of ptosis, usually bilateral / hereditary
Due to defective development of LPS
Complicated – when associated with developmental abnormality of surrounding structures

AQUIRED PTOSIS: Usually unilateral
Neurogenic – Third nerve paralysis or due to reduced sympathetic activity (Horner syndrome –ptosis, miosis, and anhydrosis)
Myogenic – gradual onset, bilateral condition, symmetrical, commonly due to
Myotonic dystrophy
Chronic progressive exophthalmoplegia
Mysthenia gravis
Aponeurotic Ptosis - It is due to weakness or disinsertion of LPS aponeurosis from anterior surface of tarsal plate.

Mechanical Ptosis – Tumor, swelling or lump adds weight to eyelid and makes it droopy.

Traumatic – injury or trauma to eyelid muscle or nerves can cause weakness or paralysis of LPB.

Involutional ptosis- it is most common form due to weakness of tissues surrounding eyelid from aging.
DEGREE OF PTOSIS:
Ptosis of less than 2 mm – Mild
Ptosis of 3 mm – moderate
Ptosis of 4 mm or more – severe
SYMPTOMS:
Drooping of one or both eyelids
Increased tearing
In severe ptosis, interference with vision.
DIAGNOSIS:
A physical examination of eye, eyelids and surrounding region.
Special tests can be done to determine underlying causes, such as myasthenia gravis.
PREVENTION:
Treatment and control of risk factors like diabetes.

COMPLICATIONS:
If ptosis is left uncorrected in a child, it leads to lazy eye.

TREATMENT:
Treatment of underlying disease.
Surgery is usually done to correct ptosis and improve the appearance of the eyelids. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct interference with vision.

HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF PTOSIS:
In treatment of ptosis, homoeopathy has both curative and palliative effects without any side effects.
Homoeopathy offers long lasting to permanent cure, treating the disease from its roots, for most of the ailments.
For treating case of temporary or reversible ptosis constitutional medicines are used. While selecting constitutional medicine of patient his physical, emotional and general factors are considered. Homoeopathy has holistic approach towards patient which means treating patient as a whole and not his specific disease or parts of body. In homoeopathy medicine is selected considering all symptoms and with individual approach. So every patient gets medicine as per his own individual symptoms.
It will not only cure paralysis of muscle but help to improve general eye condition. Homoeopathic medicines improve our immune power to fight out infections.
As ptosis gives inferior feelings due to defective appearance, person loses its confidence and gets inferiority feeling. Homoeopathic medicines help the patient to improve on it, and live normal confident life.
In severe or congenital ptosis, palliative approach helps to relieve symptoms. Medicine selected on symptom similarity often reduces most symptoms of patient.
Homoeopathy is based on law of similar-"similia similibus curentur" which means "like cures like"!   Thus the medicine selected from symptom similarity of the patient gives wonderful results. There is no single medicine to cure ptosis in homoeopathy & different medicines are not given to relieve every different symptom.
Homoeopathic medicines not only reduce the severity and recurrence of complaints but it will also improve general health of patient. They are safe, gentle and effective to give relief in harmless way.
Homoeopathic medicines work effectively on children as well as adult patients and can be taken safely during pregnancy by women. They are most palatable medicines and easy to administer. Still patient should not do self-medication and take medicines after consulting a homoeopathic physician.
Thus homoeopathy is the best option as curative and palliative for treating ptosis.
