Amrita was crazily in love with Saif. Her world revolved around him and the kids. There is a lot of hurt. But she's clear that she doesn't want to tie her man down with emotional blackmail. And she will not make things ugly
"Amrita is the only person I am concerned about because my family is very important to me," Saif Ali Khan had said in an interview to us not too long ago. The words have a bitter ring to them today, as the Saif-Amrita shaadi flounders.
The news of their separation come as a shock to most in the industry. True, when the impulsive, hot-headed young Saif had married Amrita 19 , not too many had given them a chance. To everyone's surprise, the couple held together happily for many years. Only to hit the rocks after 13 years and two kids.
Apparently it's Saif who has had a change of heart. A close friend of his reveals, "Yes, he was quite domesticated. Yes, he loved Amrita and still does. But he also loves another woman. He did try very hard not to hurt Dingy, " but he couldn't make it work.
The girl in question is a stunning Italian model whom Saif has introduced to close friends as Rosa. They met a few months ago during one of his stage shows abroad and it was said to be love at first sight for both. A friend recalls,"His marriage vows were important too. He was torn between his heart and conscience mind for a while.
He remained in constant touch with Rosa on the phone or via sms. It was an sms that he'd forgotten to delete that Amrita discovered. "Dingy was shocked and hurt," a friend of Amrita's reveals. She apparently gave Saif an ultimatum-it's either me or her. There was no room for two women. And Saif, after much thought, made his choice. Because, says the friend, "He was sure that what he'd got into wasn't just a fling but something much more serious. A relationship he wanted to turn into a commitment."
Dimple Kapadia and designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, who are close friends of the couple and were witnesses to their secret marriage, tried to bring the couple together again. But to no avail. Both Amrita and Saif were sure there was no getting back with each other. Amrita was clear that she didn't want to tie her man down with emotional blackmail and Saif knew it would not be fair to Dingy if he kept cheating on her. Once the break was made, it is said Saif immediately moved out to a rented place of his own. He's also said to have withdrawn huge amounts from the couple's joint bank accounts. A clear sign that the split was final from his side. He would not lead a dual life. Before word could spread and he was asked unwelcome questions, Saif left for his world tour of stage shows. "It's not as if Saif has left his family penniless," points out a family friend. "He has invested enough money in a fixed deposit for Sara and Ibrahim. He loves them too much to leave them without support. He hates what has happened but it wasn't something he plotted and planned. These things happen, that's life."
All talk that Saif got carried away with the recent success of his solo hero film Hum Tum doesn't cut much ice with his friends. One of his buddies takes up for him: "Separations do not happen overnight. There problems have been there for some time. After a point you cannot stick together just for the sake of pleasing others or for the sake of your image. Saif is a mature guy. He didn't lie to his wife. He told her the whole truth. He has been a devoted father and husband all these years and cutting off ties was very painful for him too. But he didn't want to live a farce."
According to a family source, Saif's parents are very upset too. "When Saif told them of his decision to leave Amrita they were too shocked to react intitally. Dingy has been a good daughter-in-law to them and they love their grandchildren. But both Sharmila and Pataudi only advise, they never impose their decisions on their children. They're hoping this is just a passing phase and that Saif will return home to his family." Sharmila is said to have refused to allot dates for AB Corp's Virrudh.
Amrita is now trying to get a hold on herself and move on with her life.. "Obviously, she's shattered but she is a strong girl," her friend says. "She knows she has to remain in control for the children's sake." She's also trying to make a new life for herself and has sent out feelers that she would like to make a comeback. Her last screen appearance was in Sunny Deol's in 19, where she played Bhagat Singh's mother and delivered a moving performance. She has been talking to TV producers too and three TV shows, one of which will be for Ekta Kapoor, are said to be in the pipeline.
The children, used to their father being away for long spells shooting, have not fully comprehended the situation. Blurbs Yes, Saif loved Amrita and still does. But he also loves another woman.
