'Kya Huaa Tera Vaada' set for time leap?
Kya Hua Tera Vaada
TV czarina Ekta Kapoor continues her love for time leaps in her shows. Now her soap "Kya Huaa Tera Vaada" is soon set to be going ahead in time.

The show might witness a leap of nine or 15 years, a source told.

"Kya Huaa Tera Vaada", aired on Sony, features actors Mona Singh and Pawan Shankar in the prominent roles of Mona and Pradeep, respectively.

The current track shows Pradeep being framed by Anushka Sarkar (Mouli Ganguly) for the murder of Shaurya Mitra (Chetan Hansraj), while Mona is trying hard to prove her husband Pradeep is innocent.
Who will remain in the show, and who will exit it post the leap is still unknown.

The news of the leap comes just a day after it was officially announced that Ekta's "Pavitra Rishta", aired on Zee TV, will take a six-month leap next week.

Sargun Mehta to enter as Mona's daughter in Kya Huaa?
Sargun Mehta

Time leaps on shows are the new thing. After Balaji Telefilms' Bade Achhe Lagte Hain going in for a leap, its now turn for the production house's other show-Kya Huaa Tera Vaada on Sony Television Entertainment to do the same.

As viewers are aware, this week there will be a maha cross over episode between Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and Kya Huaa Tera Vaada where Anushka (Mauli Ganguly) points the gun at Mona's mother but in a series of events, Anushka fires at Ram who bleeds profusely.

What follows next week is a time leap in Kya Huaa Tera Vaada where Mona will be portrayed as an elderly and independent woman and her three kids-Bulbul, Rano and Rajbir, will also be shown all grown up.

Here's the interesting part. Popular television actor Sargun Mehta (who is dating actor Ravi Dubey) has been approached to play Bulbul, Mona's older daughter. Reliable sources from the sets inform that Bulbul's character will be around 24 years old. However, Sargun is having trouble confirming her dates and if things work out, she will enter the show as Mona's daughter. Says Sargun, "I have been approached to play Bulbul but I cannot confirm anything right now".

Another popular name considered for Bulbul's role is Sukirti Kandpal. When contacted, she remained unavailable for contact.

TOI: Kya Huaa Tera Vaada' to bring in major twists?

'Kya Huaa Tera Vaada' to bring in major twists?
Kya Huaa Tera Vaada
We had told you that 'Kya Huaa Tera Vaada' is going in for a leap. The leap, which will take place next week, most probably Monday, is also going to bring in a major twist in the story line. Pradip Singh (Pawan Shankar) will be shown as dead and Vineet Raizada's character, portrayed by Darshan Pandya, will come to an end.

Darshan confirmed this news. "Yes, my character will no longer be there. I have just one or two days of shoot left," he said. Mona will be portrayed as an elderly independent woman with three kids, Bulbul, Rano and Rajbir. TV actor Sargun Mehta of 12/24 Karol Bagh fame has been approached to play Mona's elder daughter 'Bulbul'. "Yes I have been approached. But I have date issues. The details are still being worked out," said Sargun.

Now comes the interesting part. Sukirti Kandpal, who plays Jazz in Rab Se Sohna Isshq, has been approached to play Anita, Anushka Sarkar (Mouli Ganguly's) daughter. The track will then revolve between Mona and Anushka's daughters. Sukirti said, "I am not sure whether I will be playing the character as I have some pre-conceived notions about the role."

Now the big question that viewers will grapple with is, who is Anita's father?

TB: 2012: what a leap year for small screen!

Tuesday, December 04, 2012 | 12:28:05 PM IST (+05:30 GMT)

The year 2012 has been a 'leap' year in every which way as far as the Indian small screen is concerned. Popular shows like "Pavitra Rishta", "Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai" and "Kya Hua Tera Vaada" are leaping forward - by months or y

leap year

The year 2012 has been a 'leap' year in every which way as far as the Indian small screen is concerned. Popular shows like "Pavitra Rishta", "Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai" and "Kya Hua Tera Vaada" are leaping forward - by months or years to take the story forward and keep viewers engaged.

Zee TV's "Pavitra Rishta" took a six-month leap Monday as did Star Plus' "Yeh Rishta..." that moved five years ahead; Sony's "Kya Huaa Tera Vaada" is also expected to move nine or 15 years ahead this week.

Zee TV's "Hitler Didi" moved ahead by eight years in September and Life OK's "Dil Se Di Dua. Saubhagyavati Bhava" took a leap of seven years around the same time.

The idea is to keep the audience hooked, says actor Sameer Soni, whose show "Parichay Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka" on Colors took a nine-year leap in August.

"It does take a little time to hook on (to a leap in a show), but then with the continuity of the character, it is just a matter of time before viewers start adjusting to the newer show," Sameer told IANS.

"If this (change) goes well, then 90 percent time, the show is a success. Ultimately, all you do is take the same characters and put them in a new situation," he added.

Shows like "Pavitra Rishta" and "Uttaran" have taken multiple leaps to keep the story going and it is often done to revive dipping television rating points (TRPs).

Veteran actress Aruna Irani, who has featured in television shows like "Vaidehi", "Jhansi Ki Rani" and "Main Laxmi Tere Aangan Ki", feels it is important for writers to bring a change in the script as the audience tends to get bored with the same plot over time.

"For how long can you talk about the same thing? It is definitely very important to take a turn because even the audience will not like the same thing for a long time. The writer has to turn the story around after some time because it has to hold your interest," Aruna told IANS.

The trend is not new.

Ekta Kapoor's trendsetting shows "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii" and "Kasautii Zindagii Kay", which ruled the roost for a long time, popularised the formula.

At that time, however, a leap meant the addition of a white streak in the hairstyle, or a pair of spectacles, or more conservative blouses, or a walking stick. The leaps are a tad different now.

When the story of "Bade Achche Lagte Hain" moved five years ahead, actress Sakshi Tanwar's character Priya was shown to be more modern in her dressing than before. Same was the case with actress Renuka Israni, who plays Priya's mother in the show.

In "Uttaran", actress Tina Dutta was shown in a double role post the leap. In one role, she played middle-aged Ichcha, clad in simple and dull saris, while in the role of Ichcha's look-alike daughter Meethi, she was seen in bright and colourful fusion wear.

Also, earlier, the leaps were long - as much as 20 years. But that has reduced to a few years, and sometimes, as less as six months, as in the case of "Pavitra Rishta".

Often, actors leave shows after a leap for the simple reason that they don't want to look older than their own age.

TOI: Leaps ruling small screen

By Amrita Mulchandani, TNN | Dec 5, 2012, 12.00 AM IST

Leaps ruling small screen
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

Time machine is on a fast forward mode on the small screen. Suddenly the hero in your favourite soap with jet black hair comes back to you with a mop of salt and pepper hair. Leaps in television shows are back. After all the twists and turns, heavy dose of drama following actors quitting shows, TV soaps are now looking at new ways to divert audiences' mind and hold their attention on shows.

Leaps are generally used to take the story forward and break the monotony of the current track by introducing new faces and of course high voltage drama. Audiences now will get to see a six month leap in Pavitra Rishta, five years leap in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, 10 or 15 years leap in Kya Huaa Tera Vaada and five years leap in Ek Veer Ki Ardaas ' Veera.

Leap not only takes the story to a completely new level, it also introduces fresh face for the audience. Producer Rajan Shahi of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai says, "Leaps happen for different reasons. Sometimes it is done to give a fresh lease of life to the show and sometimes to develop new interest and curiosity in the show. Leaps are supposed to enhance the flavour of the show." The timing for the leap in a show is very important. Sukesh Motwani, fiction head of a renowned GEC says, "Sometimes leaps work and sometimes they don't. Everything depends on how the leap is executed and at what time.

In Pavitra Rishta,
Sushant Singh Rajput (the lead actor who played Manav) left and Hiten took the show forward after the leap. There can be chances of a show losing its charm depending on which character is being replaced and how much does the new actor fit in the role. Leaps also give the show makers a chance to tell a new story in a new package in the same show." It is learnt that audiences mostly enjoy the drama and elements which come post the leap.

Not everyone endorses the idea of continuing in a storyline involving a leap. Actor Darshan Pandya of Kya Huaa Tera Vaada says, "My character is coming to an end and so I won't be seen in the show after the leap. I am not quite comfortable with leaps either."

Interestingly, sometimes leaps happen without planning too, but in some instances prior planning is done. Producer Yash Patnaik of Ek Veer Ki Ardaas 'Veera says, "A two year old kid can't be telling the story for long. A leap was planned one year in advance only to take the story forward. It was important as in 5 days with just 30 minutes each day the entire story can't be narrated." Leap ya no leap, the telly story goes on to capture viewer's attention, for sure.

Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava?
A one year leap which saw Viraj (Karanvir Bohra) transform to a positive character, was followed by a dramatic twist resulting in sea changes in the script.

Parichay - Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka
With a nine year leap, the storyline moved forward and Abhay Diwan (
Mahesh Shetty) was introduced as Siddhi's (Keerti Nagpure) husband.

Balika Vadhu - Kacchi Umar Ke Pakke Rishte
A three year leap saw Jagya (Shashank Vyas) going to Mumbai for studies and falling in love with Gauri (Anjum Farooki) to get married later followed by dramatic turns.

Uttaran
An 18 year leap that not only witnessed ripples in the script, but also an after effect with actorsNandish Sandhu and Rashami Desai playing the leads quitting the show.

Bade Achche Laggte Hai
A five years leap with key characters Rajat Kapur (Samir Kochhar) and Peehu (Amrita Mukherjee) being introduced in the show ' a track that churned more TRPs for the show.

The year 2012 has been a 'leap' year in every which way as far as the Indian small screen is concerned.

TOI: What ails daily soaps?

By Shruti Jambhekar, TNN | Dec 7, 2012, 12.00 AM IST

What ails daily soaps?
Kitni Mohabbat Hai

Indian television probably had never seen such outpouring of emotions when Barun Sobti decided to quit the hugely popular show 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon'. The show went off the air breaking millions of hearts. Following Barun's 'quitting', are Ankita Lokhande, Shivaji Satam, Pawan Shanker, Sriti Jha and Harshad Chopra, who are all leaving or are on the verge of leaving their signature shows. The reason that the actors offered when it came to leaving their respective shows halfway might vary from 'moving on to better career prospects' to 'refusal to grow old on screen' but it also raises the same old debate, do Indian TV soaps run out of steam after a certain amount of time, causing a sense of fatigue for viewers and lead actors?

In the initial heady days actors were thrilled to be part of saas-bahusoaps and even stuck to the show till it went off air. But times have changed since then as the landscape of the Indian television industry now boasts of more GECs which means a fractured viewership that's changed the rules of telly viewing.

Actors need to stay on
When a lead star quits a show, it sends the producer/broadcaster in panic mode. The most obvious answer is to get a replacement actor. Scarred by the rejection of new actors stepping into shoes of popular leads, producers are wary of treading the same path and prefer to either 'send off' the lead or 'kill him/her off'. Actor Aditya Redij says, "I quitNaa Aana Is Des Laado as I had inhibitions about playing an 18-year-old's father. If the makers keep an actor creatively happy, why will he/she quit?" Aishwarya Sakuja shares, "An actor playing the lead has to be available for a long period as the story line revolves around him/her. But, if an actor feels a sense of monotony, then there are many waiting to be in their shoes."Karan Kundra says, "It is impossible for me to be a part of any show beyond a year. When I started with Kitni Mohabbat Hai, Ekta Kapoor was clear on not extending the story beyond a point and we wrapped season one gracefully and came back with 160 episodes of season 2."

Calling it quits

Pawan Shanker
The male lead of Kya Hua Tera Vada has reportedly also quit the show
Reason: Doesn't want to grow old
Aftermath: Show set to take a leap, new male lead might be roped in

Barun Sobti
The official heartthrob of TV and broke millions of hearts when he decided to 'take a long break' from Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?
Reason: Health and to eventually look at a career in films
Aftermath: The show shut shop abruptly a week ago

Shivaji Satam
After 15 years of playing ACP Pradyuman in CID, Shivaji has decided to move on
Reason: Wants to focus on films
Aftermath: New characters will be brought in

Harshad Chopra & Sriti Jha
After making an entry in Dil Se Di Dua Saubhagyabati Bhavo some months ago, a disgruntled Harshad has quit the show, taking along with him the leading lady Sriti
Reason: Unhappy with the track
Aftermath: The show has introduced new characters

Ankita Lokhande
There are reports that Ankita won't be continuing with Pavitra Rishta after February 2013. Reason: Doesn't want to play grandmom
Aftermath: Talks of show going off air are doing rounds

Long running soaps end on a whimper Most top shows, from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi(1830 episodes), Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki (1700 episodes), Dill Mill Gayye (721 episodes) to the more recent Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? (398 episodes) started on a high note, showing lots of promise and generating fan frenzy. When it came to their closure, the shows ended abruptly, an indication that the production houses had no choice, but to hurry up with the storylines, upsetting loyal audiences. Producer Sumeet Mittal shares, "Producers have a long story on mind when a daily soap airs. But, if we have to wrap it due to low TRPs, we do try to do justice to it."

We'll be back after a season break Shows with returning after a season break has always worked in the West. Following the footsteps of popular shows like Sex And The City, Grey's Anatomy and Lost, some popular Indian TV shows have also tried the 'second season' experiment In the past soaps, seasons of shows like Karamchand, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, Kitani Mohabbat Hai, Na Bole Tum have been aired, with mixed results, says, "Yes, introducing a second season is definitely a good option. When shows come back on a fresh note, it definitely works. There is no point dragging the soaps without any relevance. Second season of a show like Na Tum Bole Na Maine Kuuch Kaha is awaited by fans eagerly."

In the end, it's not a jaded story line but a mint-fresh story line evolving continuously with powerful performances that does the trick. But with tracks being changed, altered story-lines, lead characters quitting the show — you never know in which way the show takes a turn.
