There are many websites and many versions in them... Its best to stick to the Sanskrit texts and the interpretations there... You are right in saying that Shiva appeared first as an endless pillar of light, now known as the "Jyotirlinga".. But the worship of the existing shape of the shivling and the triangular structure in between has a special significance... There are many explanations to what the shape of the shivling means but they all lead to the same thing... The union of Shiva and his female consort (Sati/Parvati) / sign of fertility/ origin of life etc... You might want to look up sanskrit texts to see in what context the word "lingam" or "linga" is generally used and what the other synonyms of the word are...

Mythology also says that the 12 Jyotirlingas were formed after Sati's burning body was cut into 12 pieces and each piece manifested itself into a Jyotirlinga... There are no records in sanskrit texts as to what form Shiva was worshipped in before his marriage to Sati.. But it was definitely not in the form of the present day Shivling (as they show in the serial) because triangular shape in between the pillar like structure is the symbol of Pavati/Sati unified with Shiva...

Shruti.. The Ardhanarishwar explanation is a plausible one but even there it is said that Shiv appeared in a half male and half female form and split with his female form so that she could take birth as a female (Sati) and get married to him.. So again.. the shape of the Shivling which is the symbol of the male-female union may not be derived from the concept of Ardhanarishwar.. I doubt the show makers actually explored that angle though!

maybe they havent...i guess as you said, since no one knows how Shiva was worshiped before the Shivling, perhaps the makers resorted to the most known symbol of a Shiva-the shiv ling for the purpose of story telling!

Unless you have knowledge of Sanskrit you are reading translations; I would like to know what Sanskrit texts you are referring to;  it is very important to read the right type of texts also, as not all Sanskrit texts have the right connotations ( I know Sanskrit, but that is far from being a scholar who would read deep meaning into the texts) ; there are tantric meanings also appended to the linga and these are different to the ones that imply it is a symbol of light. By trying to interpret it as fertility etc., one should not give in to the useless and incorrect meanings associated by westerners.
