Okay, due to popular demand, here is my attempt at the song in Kandukonden kandukonden:

Chuttum vizhi chudadaa, Kannamma, suriya chandiraro?
Vattak kariya vizhi kannama, vaana karumai konde
Pattuk karu nile, pudavai, padittanal vairam
Natta nadu nisiyil teriyum natchatirangaladi

Solai mana oliyo unadu sundara punnagai thaan!
Neela kadal alaigal unadu nenjil alaigaladiye!
Kola kuyil osai unatu kuralin inimaya di!
Vaalaik kumariyadi kannamaa maruva kaadal kondaen

Saathiram pesikirai kannamma, saathiram yedukadi?
Aathiram kondavarke kannama, saathiram undodi?
Muthavarsammadiyin vaduvai muraikal pinbu saivom
Kaathirupenadi iduvai, kannathil muttam onre!

Does [your] gaze burn like fire, Kannamma, [is it] the blazing sun?
[Your] gaze lined with black coal evokes the lining of black clouds
Your pallu colored blue - your sari studded with diamonds
Right through them, [look], you can see the stars!

The fragrance of a garden - indeed your beautiful smile.
The waves in the blue ocean are the waves [emotions] of your heart.
The song of the cuckoo bird - is in fact the sweetness in your voice
(not sure about this line-->)Hail to this young woman who once again brought love!

You speak of rules, Kannnama, what for rules?
For someone who evokes such passion, can there be any rules?
We'll take the permission of the elders and do the customary rites later.
I will be waiting for you right here for your kiss on my cheek. Embarrassed

great job........thank u for the translation.... Clap

Wow Sangeetha...Thats an awesome effort to remember bharathi. I consider him as the greatestttt of poets. He was soo bold in his writings even in those times.

I will also try to do one here. This is the song which invoked my grandma to teach me music when she heard me sing this song when i was 5. It goes...

May Bharathi forgive me for the aesthetics of his writings lost in the natural crevices between languages.

Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
Ichagathu ullorellam edhirthu nindra podilum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
Tuchamaga enni nammai tooru seidha podhilium
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
pichai vangi unnum valkai petru vitta podhinum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
ichhai konda porulellam ilandhu vitta podinum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye

kacchaninda kongai maadhar kangal veesu podilum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
nacchaivayeeley konarndhu nambar oottum podilum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
pacchaiu niyanindhaver padaigal vanda podinum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye
ucchi meedu van idindhu veelugindra podilum
Acchamillai Acchamillai Achhamenbadhu illaiye

The meaning goes as follows:

Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist
Even if everyone in this earth is against you
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist
Even when others consider you as low and treat you like one
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist
even when reduced to the state of taking alms and living
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist
Even if u have lost all those material possessions you love
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist

Even when beautiful women with beautiful clothes give you seductive glances
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist
Even when your own friend gives you poison with his own hands
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist
Even when the british army march beside u
Even when the sky falls on your head
Dont have fear, Dont have fear, fear doesnt exist

Wow! Vidya Clap Clap Clap Thank you! That is one of my favorite poems. I did not know the second verse... just the first few lines.

Ok, here's another one (esp. for gumshuda, since he dared me Wink )Usually in TN every child learns in school and sings as a morning prayer. My 7 yr old nephew who is lucky enough to have Tamil class (as I never did) taught it to me!!

It is so typical of Bharati's style: simple, direct, sweet, yet profound. "Vendum" can be translated as "There should be" or "Let there be" or " want" or "I wish for". Basically you can read it as a prayer – Bharati is wishing for all these things he mentions

Manathil Uruthi Vendum

Manathil uruthi vendum
Vaakiniley inimai vendum
Nilaivu nallathu vendum
Nerungina porul kaippada vendum
KaNavu maiyppada vendum
Kaivasamavathu viraivil vendum
Dhanamum inbamum vendum
DharaNiyil perumai vendum

KaN thiranthida vendum
Kaariyatthil urudi vendum
PeN viDutalai vendum
Periya kadavul kakka vendum
MaN payaNura vendum
Vaanakamingu tenpada veNdum
Unmai ninRida vendum

The mind should be firm
There should be sweetness in speech
Let there be good thoughts
Cherished desires should come to hand
Dreams should come true
Let the goal be attained with ease
wish for wealth and love
wish for respect in this world

Let the eyes be opened
Let there be determination in work
Let women be independent
May a mighty god protect
May the soil be fruitful
Let the heavens be within sight
May Truth remain.

Hi Sri: This is for you. EnjoySmile (My favorite line is the one that talks about the apsara-like women of TNEmbarrassed)

When you bring up the great land of Tamil

Pleasant honey flows in the ears

When you say 'This the land of my forefathers'

A strength is born in one's [very] breath

Full of knowledge [is] Tamil Nadu

With Great Valor replete [is] Tamil Nadu

Apsara-like young women

who understand love well surround [in] the great land of Tamil

The Kaveri*, the Southern Pennai*, the Palaru*

The rivers Porunai* and Vennai*  that gave rise to Tamil

All these many flowing, fertile rivers

Nurtured the revered body [of] TamilNadu

Standing at the corner of the blue sea

Doing daily penance, the Virgin [Goddess**] at one border

Northward Vishnu's Hills*** - in between these two

You will find the land of Tamil, which is crammed with fame

Full of learning [is] Tamil Nadu

[It] gave birth to the famous Kamban****

Various arts and culture did Tamil Nadu promote

It gave Valluvar***** himself to the world and

Attained sky-high renown, did Tamil Nadu

The land of Tamils crafted that pearl jewel so dear to the heart: the Silappadikaram******

NB - there are verses I couldn't translate, including one saying how TN has spread knowledge, art, handiwork etc to China, Mizoram, "malaya tiv" (Malaysia?) and "Yavanarakam" (don't know what place that refers to)

--------notes:

(*all names of rivers)

** a reference to Kanyakumari amman - the story is that in this roop, Amman is a young girl who takes a vow that she will only marry Lord Shiva, and undertakes great tapasya to call Shiv Bhagwan to appear before her.

*** ie the Vindhyas

**** who wrote the Ramayana in Tamil

***** a simple woodcutter who wrote the famous Thirukkural, a set of aphorisms to live by. Each one starts with a different letter of the Tamil alphabet.

****** A famous literary work of Tamil Nadu that tells the story of Kannigi, whose assertive demand for justice for her unjustly executed husband left Madurai in flames.
