The Immortal

I have grown in a very spiritual and religious environment. Followers of Sanatana Dharma, my family brought me up on a regular dose of spiritual discourse, poojas, mantras and kirtans. Although when I grew up I went further away from religion and embraced my own version of spirituality, I was left fascinated by one aspect of my childhood. Lord Shiva, to whom my family offers prayers.

I have been afraid of the divine as a child - this great entity with insurmountable power and energy, from whom light shines and radiates to all corners of the world. This great person who both gentle and fierce at the same time. This person whom I cannot see, touch, feel, encounter unless I am of divine soil myself. In short, this entity that surrounds me but is intangible.

As I grew up, and my own thoughts took over, the image of the 'divine' changed for me. Gods became people that once existed. Their energies are what set them apart - what make them divine. And all the Hindu deities have their special energies for which they are revered and famous.

Lord Shiva, to me, has remained the humblest, simplest and least assuming. He was powerful but vulnerable. He could create and destroy. He was supreme to all gods but lived among the dredges of society - he loved all the unwanted, rejected, ostracised 'vermin' that others spurned away. He protected the weak, sided with the underdog, and on several occasions, has been the underdog himself. He absorbed the poison of the world and maintained the balance of live and death. Yet, he does not come to the forefront.

And it is rare to find people like him among us now. My fascination with this divine existence remains.

Perhaps that's why I'm latched onto this new TV series called Devon ke Dev Mahadev. I'm not one for Hindi TV serials, what with the current melodrama that's been churning out over the years. But as of late, mythology has become a prominent theme across media - The Immortals of Meluha has a very interested take on the story of Lord Shiva. Even more interesting still, is the TV series DKDM. I didn't think anyone would do justice to this divine existence, but actor Mohit Raina seems to have done hardcore research and hours of method acting to get under the skin of his character, which under normal circumstances can prove to be quite a challenge. Under these circumstances, chances are negligible. But I'm overwhelmed by the depth of him.

Perhaps he is a very good actor. But I like to believe, that somewhere deep down, he has connected with this entity. And for all we know he may not be that religious or even believe in folklore of generations ago, but the intensity of his emotions indicate a deep spiritual connection with hisself. I don't mean he is god, or otherworldly. He is Mohit Raina. It just takes a lot of inner strength and calm to be able to portray such a strong and difficult character. And for that, I respect him. And he is supported by an equally dedicated cast and crew. The graphics are phenomenal, especially in the Indian telly scenario. The music is intense. I can see this show has been created with passion from every person part of it. And I'm a thriver on passion. I am an avid watcher of this series, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in a very refreshing and believable depiction of the life of Lord Shiva.

Life OK's Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev is one of the top shows on the channel. And after a long search for Parvati and lots of speculation, actor Sonarika Bhadoria has been finalised to play the role.

Sonarika was last seen as Abhilasha in the same channel's Tum Dena Saath Mera. Her entry in the show will be realised in the second week of June. Confirming the news Sonarika says, "Yes, I have been finalised for the show. I am super excited and I love my character in the show. Also, it's the first time that I will be acting in a mythological show. So, it's pretty exciting and I can't wait to start shooting for the show."

Parvati, the second incarnation of Goddess Sati, is born in the home of Queen Maina and King Himavan. From her very birth, Parvati develops interest in Shiva's tales, appearance and eventually remembers her previous life as Sati. As Parvati grows into a young woman, she begins 'tapas' to please Shiva to grant her wish to reunite with him. Her entry in Shiva's life takes him on his journey from a hermit to householder.

I consider Doordarshan the Golden Era of our TV.
The whole purpose of telling stories in TV is to hold the viewer between two ad slots. Something has to be created which can be shown between the commercials.

All award shows are created to make money.
Our shows were remixed versions which could find an audience in Bandra but not in Kandivali.

Too much originality doesn't work. No channel takes too much pressure of the TRPs or designs its content accordingly.

No, these are not the words of a bitter TV critic but of the Creative head of Life Ok, at Star TV, Anirudh Pathak. Here is a man who calls a spade a spade. Working in the creative department at Star, he fully admires its working style. He is also assured of the power of television and its untapped abilities. If you believe him, experimentation in Indian TV has started knocking at the door.

Moreover, he also has dreams about setting-up a formalized resource-center for writers, where young writers can reach all channels with ease; and channels too can have direct access to fresh talent. His idea is to rope in FWA for the same. Well, a thought well-thought of.

The young man from Patna has it all clear in his mind, which he owes to his background in theater. He didn't have to struggle a lot. He had come here for films but was quick to adapt. The first concept he developed was liked by three channels leaving him the choice to name his pick. His command over literature has helped him in tossing out four thousand hours TV episodes which he has written in a brief span of time.

His reason to become a writer?
The fact that he saw them commanding respect. His reason to become a one-time producer? An offer which he went ahead with trusting his gut feelings.

His most successful shows have been Piya Ka Ghar and Kulvaddhu. He has worked for many others. His latest offering is Devon Ke Dev - Mahadev which has put Life Ok in the big league. Interestingly, the next few things he wants to write are a couple of plays!

With each passing day, TV actors are increasingly making their way into Bollywood. Few days back we wrote about small screen heavyweights, Ram Kapoor (Bade Achhe Lagte Hain) and Ravi Kissen (Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa), being signed for an upcoming YRF movie. Now, the latest we have learned is that the same production house has also roped in child actor Anushka Sen for their another upcoming project. Anushka is currently a part of Life OK's Mahadev wherein she has entered as little .

In the untitled movie, Anushka will play the female lead's cousin sister. She will balance shooting schedules between the daily series and the flick.

"Yes, my daughter Anushka is also doing an YRF untitled movie and it's a great honour for her to work with such great personalities and production house," confirmed Anushka's father, Anirban Sen, to Tellychakkar.com.

Way to go, young girl!!!

It's a clich to say that TV diminishes content, that it can't compare with the big screen in a movie theatre, and that the words 'epic scale' and 'television' just don't go together. And clichs are clichs because they are mostly true

But once in a while, there comes a big TV show which just knocks your socks off. Season one of Game of Thrones (telecast earlier on HBO) was that kind of show. And now, season two is here (it has just started on HBO) and it's even better.

A dazzling medieval fantasy, it has everything: stunning visuals, fast-paced drama, memorable characters and the sort of sweep and scale you only associate with movie spectacles. Somewhat like a television Lord of the Rings. (And no, that's not an exaggeration. I am a Lord of the Rings fan).

For those who came in late, Game of Thrones is the television version of a sprawling, seven-volume (only five have been published so far) fantasy series called Song of Fire and Ice by American writer George RR Martin. It is so intricately written (there are an estimated 1,000 'named' characters) that you wonder how the author could have possibly kept track of all the men and women and children and animals (yes, animals too, particularly three fire-breathing dragons) in his narrative. (I wouldn't have minded a flow chart when I read the books).

The story is about seven powerful kingdoms at constant war with each other, and is set in a vast landscape that moves from snowy forests to forbidding mountain fortresses, from mysterious sea ports to empty tracts of wasteland. Kings and princes, nobles and knights, queens and priestesses — all engage in the cut and thrust of ruthless palace intrigue and the casual cruelty of war games.

It's not a series for the squeamish — there is enough sex and violence in it to make even the most blas reader blanch.

Translating this dark, complex story into a TV series (each season has ten episodes) seems such a daunting task that I'm amazed anyone even attempted it. But not only have they attempted it, they've made a faithful-to-the-book, richly satisfying television experience. And no, you don't need to have read the books to enjoy the series, thought it will help to have seen season one.

How I wish someone would make one of our own epics with the same sweep and style. Imagine the Mahabharata made with similar grandeur and passion. But I suppose that is an idle fantasy. The total budget of one season of Game of Thrones is apparently in the region of $60 million. Who would spend that kind of money on a TV series here? I'm not an expert on the economics of desi television serials but even I know that such mega-budget projects are an impossibility. At the moment, that is. Perhaps one day we'll get there.

For now, we'll have to make do with Devon Ke Dev Mahadev (Life OK). Let's not even talk of the special effects or locations or sets. What does work is the story (well, how can you go wrong with the story of Shiva?), the actor who plays Shiva (Mohit Raina), the background music (it's beautiful), and some of the dialogue. And the fact that the producers have concentrated on the Shiva-Sati and now the Shiva-Parvati love story.

But imagine this serial as a grand, Rs. 50 crore project...
