I do agree that film music has deteriorated. There is too much of commercialisation. But again we have few really good MD's who can blend the old and new, classical and western well to satisfy everone's palate. But I dont completely agree with the old singers thought. Music is growing and with growth comes so bad influence. But again movies have deteriorated now also. So I guess they go hand in hand. We are not wearing the same clothes we did in 50s and 60s. I was singing on TV in India before I moved to USA. We never wore miniskirts and hold our male singers hands and danced around. But now that is the norm. Even hugging opposite sex was a big deal. But now it is fine. Soyou think it is wrong. So wellchange ishappening n all fields and so music is part of it too. We have toa ccept it

You Remeber 'Silsila' and 'Lamhe' of Shiv-Hari. You forget that hey also did 'Parampara' and 'Sahibaan'. You listen to all the songs of today in 2026 you will remember only5-10 songs form 2006 and you will tell your children: Those were the golden days of Hindi Film music!

I agree with you.. I mean to me I kno 10 years later, to my kids I am probably gonna have a very few songs to say as Lata classics and probably A R Rahman work is going to be classics .. its always that rite.. my parents grew up in Rafi - Lata era, so I kno about Lata - Rafi.. I have no idea about Talat, K L Saigal etc !! Even Lata Rafi, I know their later songs.. Rafi's songs from Shammi Kapoor and Lata ji's songs from guide and movies of the like..the songs they sang in b/w movies i have a really small idea..

i am tryin to talk from the point of an avg person.. when u talk about deterioration..what deterioration.. with respect to wat ? this has always been there..

are we talking only of quality playback singing, remixes or music direction or lyrics..
I think 80s was the worst for playback after KK's deathther was a void(shabbir kumar and co ugh!).with kumar shanu and anuradha podwal and others the music directors got their creativity back.I think alka yajnik and udit narayan are perfect "playback" singers.the were joined by sonu nigam and kavitha K.now KK shreya, shaan, sukhwinder, sunidhi et all...I am not complaining.

just a few egs from the top of my head..

sonus "tanhai"and KK's "tadap tadap ke" all time fave 'sad' songs.
"bharat hum ko jaan se pyaara hai"..gives me as much goose bumps as any old song.

list will be endless....right now I am enjoying "meter down' by adnan sami...I love the video too..

so I agree with you madhvi..in 50s and 60s too so many songs were Dead .about 25 to 30 songs a year were really great.

I wouldn't blame the quality of playback singing as much as the music direction. There is a dearth of original compositions. One gets the feeling that the good tunes have all been made and there is nothing more to be made. The lyrics don't inspire. Beats and rhythm push away all melody. It is degradation of the worst kind. Sorry if I sound negative, but that's the way I perceive it.

I agree with your point of view. These days, singers are not challenged as much with exquisite compositions as they were in the Golden Era. That is a plain fact. Those days the standard was so high, and there were so many great music directors around in the same period. The reason why we still remember singers of that era so fondly and with such respect is largely due to those evergreen compositions.

Today, technology has advanced so much and the task of singing is much less demanding. Irony is, good and unique compositions are few are far between these days, compositions that can bring out the best in talented singers.

First of all a correction to abhjit shukla's estimate of Lataji's songs. I quote from some where here:

"All of this brings us to the original question--How many songs has she sung?
Well the figure listed by Vishwas Nerurkar (and I would say he is accurate) is
5041 songs from 1945-1989. By the late 80's she was down to singing 30 odd
songs every year, so if we add the period '89-'97 to include 250 odd songs or
so, we would still have Lata singing approx 5300 Hindi songs. Ashok felt that
her non Hindi film output(Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati etc and all non-film) songs
would be about half as much if one took a conservative estimate. Take the
liberal view and say it is as much as the Hindi film output. Even then we have
Lata just over the 10,000 mark. That is a more realistic estimate."

Coming to the quality of compositions today... Have you compared home-cooked food with packaged food? Today the MD's have song banks! Lyricists have song-banks. Take ur pick. Ma ke haath ka khaana kahan?

You get what I mean?
