One Top One Flop
By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 31, 2006 - 16:38 IST
How many times have the crowds flocked in to watch a fresh young pair dance around trees and going against their parents in the name of love? We might recall how some of our top stars started out in films but can we remember the forgotten ones who also made their debuts alongside them. We are talking about a fresh couple making their debut in films where one has scaled great heights in filmdom while the other has just gone unnoticed. IndiaFM brings to you a list of actors who could not sustain themselves in the industry while their on screen better half must have delivered the goods.
Bhagyashree and Salman Khan
Though Salman Khan made his debut in Biwi Ho To Aisi in 1988, his first full fledged lead role was in Sooraj Bharjatya's Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989 opposite Bhagyashree. The film proved to be a colossal hit and the young pair suddenly became stars almost overnight. We all know about Salman's super success in the film industry. But what about Bhagyashree? Post MPK she got married and agreed to work in movies only on the condition that her co-star should be her husband Himalaya. Now, Himalaya who was as expressive as a mountain (excuse the pun) couldn't pull off any of their films together from whether Payal , Tyaagi or Qaid Mein Hai Bulbul (all 1992) and somehow this girl next door's career never clicked. She made a comeback but this time on television with her husband's serial Kagaz ki Kashti and then a music video as well. Her comeback into movies with the devotional film Jai Santoshi Maa didn't win the hearts of her fading fans either.
Both Salman Khan and Bhagyashree will be seen in special appearances in Raj Kanwar's upcoming Humko Deewane Kar Gaye. This is the first time they will star in a same film after their debut Maine Pyaar Kiya.
Before entering films Bhagyashree made her television debut with Amol Palekar's Kachchi Dhoop.
Bhagyashree also did a couple of Bangladeshi films as well as films in the south and has now entered the Bhojpuri territory.
Madhuri Dixit and Tapas Paul
Now we don't really need to give an introduction of Madhuri Dixit, do we? Madhuri made her debut in Abodh in 1986 alongside a still unknown actor Tapas Paul. He played a supporting role in the film and though he gave a fine performance it was his only Hindi film to date. Paul dominated the Bengali screen in the 1980s and 1990s as a supporting actor. Paul began his career as a loveable dullard in Tarun Majumdar's blockbuster 'Dadar Kirti' in 1980 and went on to become one of the most popular actors of Tollywood with a huge fan following especially among women.
Tapas Paul played the role of Chunnilal in the Bengali version of Devdas (2002).
He is a Trinamool Congress candidate.

Juhi Chawla and Karan Kapoor
Contrary to popular belief Juhi Chawla did not make her debut in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) but the Ex-Miss India's foray into films began with Mukul Anand's Sultanat in 1986. The film also marked the debut of yesteryear actor Shashi Kapoor's son Karan Kapoor. Now since Karan had an British mother, his foreign looks could not really bag him many Hindi films. He did a couple of more films Loha (1987) and Zalzala (1988) but nothing really substantial so as to cement his place in the industry. He finally quit films and is now a photographer in the west.
He was a child artist in Shyam Benegal's Junoon (1977) and Aparna Sen's 36 Chowrangee Lane. The latter film had his mother Jennifer Kapoor essaying the lead role.
He acted in a mini series 'The Jewel of the Crown' in 1984.
Rani Mukherjee and Shadaab Khan
With Rani sweeping all the major awards for her performance in Black (2005), can one recall her debut film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1996). She debuted alongside Amjad Khan's son Shadaab Khan playing the main lead in the film. Unlike the great Amjad Khan, Shadaab could not really sustain himself in the film, constantly being compared to his father. He did a few inconsequential roles subsequently in Beetabi (1997), Hey! Ram (2000), Refugee (2000), Bharat Bhagya Vidhata (2002) and Vishwas - The Power of Faith (2005). His unconventional looks and scrawny physique could not really match up to the criteria of a lead actor.
Having not clicked as an actor, Shadaab is now trying his hands on direction with Highway 2003 starring Kay Kay Menon and Perizaad Zorabian.
Madhoo and Ajay Devgan
Madhoo and Ajay Devgan made their debut in Phool Aur Kaante (1991). The raw Devgan managed to make a mark in action films early in his career but Madhoo could not see her Bollywood calling so she went down south and did a few good films out there. One of her most memorable films has to be Mani Ratnam's Tamil movie Roja (1992) where she essayed the title role alongside south star Arvind Swami. After that she did a number of films in Bollywood but nothing really noteworthy.
After a hiatus she signed on a film Kabhi Socha Bhi Na Tha in 2003, a bold film based on live-in relationships. But the director Kallol Sen renamed the film Love, Sex, Etc. and Madhoo did not approve of this. She also felt that the film turned out to be sleazy and not has she had visualized when the film was conceptualized. So she disassociated herself from the film. She has one more film on hand Kachchi Sadak. Will this be the film her career has been waiting for?
She did a cameo in Harry Baweja's Diljale starring Ajay Devgan (1996).
She is married to industrialist Anand Shah.
Sushmita Sen, Mukul Dev and Sharad Kapoor
Bhatts are known for introducing new talents in the industry. Their film Dastak (1996) not just marked the debut of one or two but three new faces - Ex-Miss Universe Sushmita Sen, Mukul Dev and Sharad Kapoor. Sushmita's acting prowess and beauty made her get many films though most of them fared badly at the box- office. However, her signing spree has not died down.
Mukul Dev played lead roles in most of his other films but none of them did well. Despite working with Madhuri Dixit (Wajood in 1998), Dilip Kumar (Qila in 1998), with Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah (Guru Mahaguru in 2002) and Fardeen-Feroz Khan (Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena in 2005), his career went into hibernation. Now he's moved towards television and is hosting the Indian version of the game show Fear Factor. Sharad Kapoor did a few leads in bad films and was then relegated to the back-seat in big films like Hathyar (2002), Jaani Dushman (2002), LOC Kargil (2003) and Lakshya (2004). His only notable performances include Josh (2000) and Lal Salaam (2002).
Mukul Dev acted in Anup Jalota's music video Suraj Ki Garmi.
Sharad Kapoor debuted on television with Swabhimaan.
Anjala Zaveri and Akshaye Khanna
Himalayputra (1997) was a launch pad for Vinod Khanna's son Akshaye. One might recall the song 'I am a bachelor' which proved to be a hit unlike the film. Promoted as Akshaye's film, one might remember the lead actress Anjala Zaveri who too made her debut in the film. The best one can remember about her stint in Bollywood is her role in Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998) where she clicked with the qawalli item number 'Teri Jawani Badi Mast Mast Hai'.
Did a small role in the Telugu version of Munnabhai MBBS titled Shankardada MBBS starring Chiranjeevi in the title role.
Did a cameo appearance in Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi.
Meghna Kothari and Fardeen Khan
Feroz Khan's Prem Aggan (1998) marked the debut of his son Fardeen Khan and Meghna Kothari. Though both of them were rejected in their debut film, Fardeen did manage to bag films after some time. But sadly nothing of that sort happened to Meghna. She gave her finest performance in Shyam Benegal's Hari Bhari (2000) but just like the film, she didn't get noticed. She did a few more film which includes Vadh (2002) and Sau Jhooth Ek Sach (2005) but nothing that could really give a boost to her career. One highlight of her career that can be pointed out is the Nagin dance she did (a hilarious takeoff on Sridevi) in Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudice (2005) where she played Aishwarya Rai's sister.
Not many are aware but she appeared in the opening song Dhinak Dhinak Dha in the film Parineeta (2005).
Rinki Khanna, Dino Morea and Sanjay Suri
Rinki, the younger daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia made her entry in Bollywood with Raj Kaushal's Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (1999). The film also marked the debut of models Dino Morea and Sanjay Suri. The film fared badly at the box office and didn't do much to the careers of either of the three.
Dino bagged a number of films after his second film Raaz turned out to be a surprise hit and Sanjay Suri showed his talent as an actor in films like Pinjar (2004) and My Brother Nikhil (2005). All of the three had a slow start to their filmi careers but Rinki was the one who could not really get a foot hold despite being the daughter of two stars. After PMKK, her next film was Mahesh Manjrekar's Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain (2000). The only notice she got in the film was her song 'Kem Che' which was a big hit of sorts. She did a film down south Majnu (2001) which was a hit but nothing really great came her way in Bollywood. One of her better films was Jhankaar Beats (2003) but she had a small role in the film. Her other films include Chameli (2003), Pran Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye (2003), Mango Souffl (2002) and Yeh Hai Jalwa (2002).
Though not paired opposite each other, she again appeared in Jhankar Beats along with her debut film costar Sanjay Suri.
Genelia D'Souza and Riteish Deshmukh
This pair made their debut in the small film Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003) which turned out to be a surprise hit esp. in the south territories. Riteish Deshmukh's established his foothold with a number of comedy films like Masti (2004), Kyaa Kool Hain Hum (2005), Bluffmaster (2005) and Maalamaal Weekly (2006).
Though her performance was appreciated, Genelia could not really make it in Bollywood. Her only other film was Masti with Riteish again where she went unnoticed because of a big star cast. She went down south where she has now done a number of films.
She has done a number in a children's music video Jack and Jill.
Simran and Arshad Warsi
Arshad Warsi got his career resurrected in Munnabhai M.B.B.S. (2003) after enacting a wonderful role as the Munnabhai worshipping Circuit. After that it was a career climb all the way for Warsi but sadly his co-star in his first film Tere Mere Sapne (1996), Simran could not have the same results. Though she did star in a few more movies in Bollywood like Anari No.1 (1999), Khauff (2000), the fact was that the audience did not accept her at all. However, she is a superstar down south with many big hits including Vaali and Mani Ratnam's Kannathil Muthamittal.
She was dating Kamal Hassan.
Shanti Priya and Akshay Kumar
We all know where Akshay Kumar stands in the industry. Not many might remember his first film Saugandh way back in 1991 opposite new-comer Shanti Priya. Akshay went on to make it big with his Khiladi series but Shanti could not really leave a mark for herself in the film industry. Some of her films include Ikke Pe Ikka (1994), Phool Aur Angaar (1993), Andha Intequam (1993) and Mere Sajana Saath Nibhana (1992).
She is the sister of actress Bhanu Priya.
Amrita Rao and Arya Babbar
Two rank new-comers made their debut in Raj Kanwar's Ab Ke Baras (2002), a film based on previous birth. The film failed miserably but the sweet looking girl next door Amrita Rao got noticed. She went onto star in films like Ishq Vishk (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004), Masti (2004), etc. Her career is going great guns with top film-makers signing her up. Sadly, the same wasn't the case with Raj Babbar's son Arya Babbar. Post his debut; he just had a couple of releases like Mudda - The Issue (2003) and Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum (2004). Both of them fared miserably at the box- office and Arya is out of sight totally.
He has signed a joint Indo Pak production Dil Humko Dijiye with his father Raj Babbar.
The list also includes actors like:
Apoorva Agnihotri who made his debut alongside Mahima Choudhary in the SRK starrer Pardes (1997).
Vivek Mushran who had a big debut in Subhash Ghai's Saudagar (1991) opposite Manisha Koirala.
Then there was Kamal Sadanah who starred opposite Kajol in Bekhudi (1992)
Can one remember Harish, the chocolaty looking child star who made his debut alongside Karisma Kapoor in Prem Qaidi (1991)?
Ravi Behl too features in the list with his film Narasimha (1991) opposite Urmila Matondkar.
