"Playing a negative character is more enjoyable and exciting"

-Riitu Raaj

From Tol Mol Ke Bol to Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki has been a long journey. Banegi Apni Baat happened midway, but Riitu Raaj is getting recognized only as Sanjay Doshi, the newest villainous character that has infiltrated Star Plus' popular soap.

Not surprisingly, he is basking in the attention. In an exclusive chat, he ponders on his roles, inspirations and future projects -

After all these years, why have you suddenly changed the way you spell your name?
The configuration of my spelling and numbers was not right. I experienced a lot of suffering and many things in life didn't turn out as expected. I changed the spelling of my name from Rituraj to Riitu Raj after consulting a well-known numerologist. After that, I have realized that things are really working in my favour.

How did you land the role of Sanjay Doshi in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii?
Ekta knew me as an actor as I had worked in Balaji Telefilms' Bandhan and Ghar Ek Mandir earlier. The role of Sanjay Doshi was the first prominent negative role offered to me.

Your character has wrought a storm in the story. What's next in KGGK?

The show is rocking. My character,Sanjay Doshi is absolutely vengeful. In the coming episodes, it will be revealed that I had made plans to destroy Om Agarwal's family, in cohorts with Pallavi, and the duo will retaliate in full swing for the insult Sanjay has endured.

Is playing negative harder than portraying a positive role?
It's not harder; it's more enjoyable and exciting. One needs to use the craft of acting more.

You have always been considered a good actor but not a good-looking oneā€¦
I know I am not a conventionally good-looking guy. Even without good looks, one can be attractive. I have never suffered from a complex. I have always been accepted. In fact, a lot of girls have had crushes on me. I had a lot of girl friends.

Does Ekta Kapoor make surprise visits to the sets of KGGK?
Yes. She is very fond of this project. She is an involved producer. She is a screenplay queen. My character has been devised by Ekta and writer Mahesh Pandey.

Do the KGGK sets see any manipulations and backbiting?
I won't call it that. Of course, it is a competitive world wherein you are paid for your emotions. Groupism does happen. Jealousy is common, especially when you perform better than others. Some people do try to make things difficult but I have learnt to ignore and be alert. I have more of friends than enemies.

How was it working with so many women in Zee's Kittie Party?
It was good. I am a flirt off the sets. It used to be like a picnic, particularly at lunch time. There were no ego hassles. Shveta Salve, Deepshikha and Achint Kaur are my good friends.

Do you think men can bond like women as shown in Kittie Party?
I don't think so. Men shy away from each other. They don't reveal much about themselves. They may bond while watching sports together or some such, but they can't bond like women do.

Why have you never worked in films after Mr. Shrimati?
TV had always been good to me as I could toy with a variety of roles. Prakash Mehra's Mr. Shrimati was a disappointment. After its debacle, I had decided that I would never work in films. But seeing the kind of films that are made today, I am open to films and am in talks with a few producers.

What's next on your plate?
Bal Bal Bache a comedy serial by Deeya and Tony Singh for Sahara which will go on air in September. The star cast includes me, Akshay Anand, Saleem Shah and Vrajesh Hirjee. Another is a serial for Ekta Kapoor, which is not a typical soap opera, plus one more project on Zee. So, you are going to be seeing a lot more of me!

"Comparing Urvashi with Sonia Gandhi is unfair!"

Tisca Chopra has come full circle in life. She started her career as a leading lady to Ajay Devgan, disappeared from the film industry, then did plays like Mahtama V/S Gandhi, Salesman Ramlal and Inshah Allah and finally joined television with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. She's also done films like Hyderabad Blues II, Loknayak Jay Prakash Nariayan and Karma. Right now she is playing 'Urvashi in Sarrkkar. Here speaks to Prashant Golecha on career, life and Buddhism.

How is it playing Ronit Roy's wife in Sarrkkar?
The relationships one portrays are secondary. What is important is my character "Urvashi" and its graph. It is nice to be the part of an interesting show.

What is so special about your character "Urvashi" in "Saarkar"? If parallels are drawn between the serial and the Gandhi family, do you think you are portraying Sonia?
Comparing Urvashi with Sonia Gandhi is an unfair comparison. Urvashi is morally the strongest character. She speaks her mind and is managing the house. I do have a difference of opinion with the character of my husband, the role essayed by Ronit. By and large, Urvashi is a strong and silent person.

Your role of "Mallika" in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii was negative but popular. How much did you relate to it?
The experience was outstanding. But I don't identify with it at all. The audience loved me. Whenever I met fans, they used to tell me - why don't you let Aryan marry Shruti??

On the personal front, how come you changed your name from Priya to Tisca overnight?
The word "Tisca" means Holy River and that's my original name. Priya was the name given by the producer of my first film, as the alphabet P was lucky for him! But after that, I started using my original name...

You are into the Buddhist way of life. How did it start?
It all started seven and a half years ago. I had few personal issues and I wasn't getting answers to my questions from anywhere. A family friend spoke to me about it. Initially, I started reading about it. I found comfort and what I needed. Buddhism is a way of my life now. Dr. Daisaku Ikada who lives in Japan is my Guru. I do intend to meet him someday. I was awarded a medal for art and culture through him recently too.

What difference has Buddhism made in your life?
I have stopped feeling helpless. I don't look up to others to run my life. I know how to lead my life and get results out of it. I can help others become independent as well. I want to share what I have gained.

Literature is supposed to be your second love. Does it run in the family, considering you are related to Mr. Khushwant Singh. What was his reaction on knowing that you are doing a show based on the Gandhi family?
I am a literature graduate from Hindu College, New Delhi. I read a lot of philosophy. Khushwant Singh is my mom's uncle. I have not met him for a long time. Till now, though, there has been no reaction from him on my role as such.

Do you feel looking good is very important for TV actors?
Not at all. Actors like Irrfan Khan and Shefali Shah aren't really conventionally good looking. What matters most for a TV actor is a strong personality and the roles which should be interesting and which one can play with deep conviction.

What are your future plans?
The future has its own plan. I have a lot of goals like opening a production house, take writing more seriously and do a few
