Dear Dr. Kalam Sir,
It is with an anguished and saddened heart that we appeal to you. We are all hardened lovers of the great 5000 year old tradition of Indian Music that we cherish, respect and rever. The worthy torchbearers of this great tradition hold an esteemed position in the annals of music, because of their immense knowledge and their spirit in keeping our music alive even in these times of of a false sense of Globalisation and imminent total western sabotage of our ancient and rich culture.
Such temples of music now live in absolute apathy and squalor. Your Office had justly awarded the greatest maestro of the Shehnai, Ust. Bismillah Khan with the Bharat Ratna. Now, this legend lives in a ramshackle run down house with one room and a stringed cot only. The Govt. is yet to release the Rs. 60,000 grant it had promised nearly 10 years ago. Ustadji is not even in a position to buy his basic medicines or avail of treatment because of extreme poverty and the absolutely apathetic treatment meted out to him by the cogs of your...nay....our government.
Pt. VG Jog, undisputably the greatest Violin maestro of Hindustani Classical Music, died after a prolonged illness because he could not afford treatment at a good hospital.
Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Sangeet Samrat, was hospitalised a few days ago, and there is not one single news report about it in the Electronic Media.
While on the other hand, the TV airs all sorts of absolute nonsense, which is not Indian Culture, Indian Sensibilities or Indian Tradition. If some film actor falls sick, or marries, or divorces, all the channels make merry of the news as if there's no tomorrow.
You have all the channels giving much airtime to western music (some of which is hardly called music) and other vulgar things like Remixes which absolutely defy the norms of decency.
But not one single 'Music' channel, like [V] or MTV or VH1 or Zee Music show anything remotely related to our Classical or Folk traditions.
And then we lament about the loss of culture in our society. There is an increasing hypocracy about the way we handle things, isn't it Sir?
China has now set up a separate Ministry to strictly enforce sanctions that would revive it's old culture back. The least our country could do, is to take care of these maestros. Sir, they're gems that will never be born again. They're legends. They're an immense storehouse of music, culture, knowledge, tehzeed and nazakhat. If not for them, our music would've been dead by now.
Would you; as a lover of the arts yourself, like to see it happening?
I don't think so, Sir. I am sure you share the same concers as us.
It's a sincere request from a group of Indians who believe in our identity as a complete Indian. And we're mighty proud of the fact.
Please do honour us with a feedback, sir.
