indian music is somethin which is soothin to the ears.Indian music is much harder than other music,it involves tradition, culture as well as the identity of an Indian, although am not saying tht other country music is poor quality, its just tht i feel music has always been a very important part of indian tradition thus, singin an Indian song in India also includes certain responsibilities. Smile

hey i totally agree with you!!! Not with an intention to being mean to Westerners or anything. They make some excellent music. Their classical music is really good too!

But there is a lot of depth to Indian music. Very fine and subtle things are paid attn to. I think only Indian music has something like morning and evening raagas....Imagine that!!! I wonder at such refinement of the senses!! I rarely see it in other ppl...

I see what you are saying. Classical music is different.
Indian classical music, rather Shastriya sangeet, has a spiritual inclination.

But what we are witnessing in this contest is different.

Indian Idol contestants dont seem to be lending their persona to their music or songs, rather the public measures their performance against the original performer's song.

The culture thing seems to push us to worship hoeroes (like Kishoreda, Rafi sahib, Panchamda ...)

Yeah, you have a point. Even in the forum, we tend to compare original songs to renditions. Some people even were comparing Amey's Lagaa Chunri to the legendary Manna Dey's original, saying he missed some harkats and sang it faster than the original! Granted, its true he sang it faster than the original but what's wrong with that? Shouldn't be improvisation/experimentation be rewarded as well? Confused An original will always remain an original!

There isn't too much room for creativity or risk-taking unfortunately. I guess AI contestants really do bring their personality into their performances. Another thing is many of the songs attempted on II2 haven't been classical or even semi-classical barring a few performances. So the depth we're discussing about classical music really doesn't hold in II2.

A few good contestants in American Idol: Chris, Paris, Kathleen, Mandisa, Maybe Taylor

Indian Idol: Amey, Karu, Meenal (According to me)

Remember that American Idol is pretty much comparable to Indi/Paki-pop category, there are not many musical movies like Bollywood. So their song supply is from Soft Rock/Pop/Country/Blues primarily, and not from Western classical..... So there is a lot of chance to be creative.

I think American Idol has to take permission from original singer before any song is performed by contestants...Have you heard similar thing in II ? Wink
