Music to be seen or heard?

Has the advent of music videos and cable TV sounded the death knell for Indian classical music? How many of us are content today to just see music in the form of music videos and  Bollywood film promos over cable TV? Is Indian classical music getting less and less popular because it has no visual appeal- after all how long can you expect teenagers to watch a group of musicians sitting on a stage? Are we satisfied with the middle path- the kind SGMP has shown in the past…get good singers to perform in your living room….but that too has shown deterioration now as commercialism creeps into the motives of the pioneers of this genre ( TV music shows)

Is the web the answer? Can it bring back the glorious days when we heard music and not saw it…or is it just going to end as a medium for individualized music viewing?

Pls write in with ur comments!

Thanks for reading Awww......Pure classical music is fading away because we are satisfied with the music Bollywood dishes out for us...and Bollywood, TV...all these are visual media...so pure classical music can never have a mass following... because mass media doesnt focus on it...

Would you rather watch Bharat Natyam or Modern Dance?

One is fantastic due to history, grace and difficulty.

The other is more exciting, stimulating and generally fun.

I would say the same thing happens with music.
It's like comparing Mozart with Michael Jackson. Each having their value and their listeners.

Its really hard to compare classical to modern music. Personally, I would say I end up listening to a lot of music from the 60's and 70's. Somehow that music is more melodious and enjoyable to my ear.

ranig...My point is not about personal preferences in music or comparing the various forms of music...crux is to discuss that why is Indian classical music lacking mass appeal...is just because it cannot be presented well on the visual media or is there soem other reason?

Thanks for the clarification giggles. My comment was more in relation to the other comments before me. I guess what I was indirectly saying is that I'm not sure it's because it lacks visual media. I can't be sure about this. But, obviously it is a speculation.

Personally, I believe Music tends to move with time. There will always be a certain percentage of people who will be attracted to classical music and you will always find those listeners. I think as people get older it also gets more appealing because you begin to appreciate it more.

Most music is marketed and targeted at the young generation and that's what we see and hear. As a certain group of music fanatics and lovers spread their wings. They go and search the oldies and even classical. I believe a good ear and sense of music can truly appreciate it. But, it will not have mass appeal.
