Kalyan local derails at Masjid in peak hours, 100 trains cancelled

The wheels of the sixth coach slid off the tracks when the train was at a cross-over, leading to the seventh coach tilting, blocking the tracks

Rail traffic on the suburban section of Central Railway was disrupted on Wednesday after a Kalyanbound local train derailed near the Masjid station around 8.42 am.

The train, which had started from platform number 7 of CST was approaching Masjid station, when the sixth bogie (from the engine) derailed.

Although no casualties were reported, commuters travelling on the Kalyan local (K-27) were shocked to see the seventh coach tilting and hanging in midair.

Sources from CR said that motorman of the Kalyan local U L Ugle was driving the train at the speed of 12 km/hour. Divisional Railway Manager Rahul Jain said that except for one person, nobody else was injured in the incident.

Buddhi Ram, a fisherman from Kurla, the only person who received minor injures in the incident said, "I was on my way to Ghatkopar to sell fish. The train was moving as usual and there were only four people in the bogie. Suddenly there were jerks and our coach was being dragged.

Before we knew it, the coach was tilted." Recalling the traumatic experience, he added, "When the train came to a halt, we decided to jump. I hurt my foot while jumping."

Witness said that the ladies coach and the other coaches were empty. After the mishap, CR authorities cancelled more than 100 locals, leaving thousands of irate commuters stranded on various stations and local trains.

Several long distance trains were also delayed by 45-90 minutes. Bhavesh Jain, a commuter who was stranded at Dadar station for an hour said that there was no information about the delay. "There was complete chaos on the station," he said.

The Koyna Express which leaves CST at 8 am was cancelled around 12 noon. "The railway officials did not even make any alternate arrangements," said Shushant Mane, who travelling with his family.

Railway orders probe

Senior railway officials rushed to the derailment site and started rescue and repairs of the damaged tracks.

"Our first priority was to ensure services are restored back on the tracks as fast trains towards Kalyan and beyond use the damaged line," said a senior railway official.

Commissioner of Railway Safety Chetan Bakshi, who visited the site himself, ordered a detailed probe into the incident.

While one set of CR official rushed to the derailment site and started replacing the damaged tracks with new ones, the others installed hydraulic jacks and removed the dented bogie and towed it away to the Kurla car shed. Services on the suburban network were restored to normal around 9.45 pm.

 'I saw my coach tilt'

The train was moving as usual but as soon as it left CST station, we felt several jerks.

Suddenly we saw our coach tilting and dragging. We thought that it would fall to one side. When the train stopped, I tried to jump off the coach when I hurt my foot.

Some railway officials noticed so they took me to Byculla railway hospital where I got an X-ray done and my foot was plastered

The rage is here

Dhanush flash mobbed: Kolaveri di takes over Churchgate

City's busiest station comes to a standstill as hundreds join Dhanush in a Why This Kolaveri jig

On a regular day, Churchgate station at 4.45 pm is full of people weaving past each other, bags and briefcases clutched to their sides, buzzing purposefully towards their regular train home. On Wednesday evening, for five minutes, they broke into a mad jig.

A flash mob organised by Mumbai Mirror and led by Kolaveri sensation Dhanush brought the entire station to a standstill, the reaction of the crowd leaving the Tamil actor stunned. "I'm overwhelmed by the response, and by the power of people coming together to sing the song. I first experienced stardom eight years ago when I made it big in Tamil films. I am living it all over again in this second innings, thanks to Mumbai Mirror. It truly feels wonderful," Dhanush said. In the four weeks since the video went viral, it has already received 25,965,856 hits on YouTube and has inspired a slew of versions in different languages across India (and one in Pakistan).

With a dozen bodyguards around him, Dhanush sparked wild scenes when he walked in - surprised commuters hooting, whistling, jostling and shoving their mobile phones and cameras at him.

The PA system blared Kolaveri di, and a crowd of 300 people - including college students, office-goers, housewives and a couple of foreigners - started dancing to the beat. When hundreds of voices broke into the 'hand-la glass-u…glass-la scotch-u' stanza, the loudspeakers were drowned out.

Dhanush, mobbed through the performance, barely had space to move, forget shaking a leg. Such were the levels of excitement that the paanwallah outside thought "Sallu aa gaya". The video can be viewed at www.gaana.com.

Sisters Archana (26) and Nishita (20), two of the dancers who were selected to perform at Churchgate, had absolutely no regrets about bunking office and college respectively: "It was totally worth it," they giggled. College student Jayesh Sahu said, "It was the best thing I have ever seen. It was chaotic, it was hot and it was sweaty. But I loved it."

Each member of the flash mob had taken time off their hectic schedules over the last three days to practise the dance steps with choreographer Terence Lewis. Forty-two-year-old Geeta Shreedhar, who lives in Chennai, packed her bags and got her daughters Dikshita and Sharda to the city only to take part in the five-minute event. "I love Dhanush, and Kolaveri di is simply mind-blowing," she said.

Two college-going teens, Nisha and Sanjukta, replaced their study hours with the dance sessions. "It was mad and chaotic, but awesome fun," they said. A middle-aged gentleman who stood by, watching the dramatic scenes around him said, "This was truly an expression of freedom by Western Railway commuters."

Dhanush live at Oval

Next stop for Dhanush was the Oval Maidan, where - with neither a loudspeaker nor a sound system in sight - he got almost 400 people to sing and dance along with him. He had finally found some space to move, and he didn't disappoint his fans who had followed him to the Oval from Churchgate.

"My voice has gone for a toss, but it doesn't matter. What does is that I connected with the youth and their voice. It felt amazing to hear all of them scream the song back at me. Nothing could top the sound of all our voices coming together."

 Kola-various on youtube

Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam's son Nevaan Nigam has made a kiddie version of Kolaveri Di. Nevaan, however, ask for a glass of milk instead of scotch http://***urlremoved***/d5zgdw7

There is also an Alvin and the Chipmunks version of the song, with three female chipmunks that will leave you in peals of laughter http://***urlremoved***/c4usyne

If the viral video Dhokla Spiderman amused you, try the Gujarati Kolaveri, or shall we say, Why this chokri kharchaa di? http://***urlremoved***/dxu6lnb

A Chinese guy singing Kolvari? Di is replaced by Da and Tamil by English even as the glass of scotch is replaced by a knife… http://***urlremoved***/ctxrl5a

Turning Kolaveri into a male-bashing song is Thanges, who has since apologised for hurting sentiments of purists http://***urlremoved***/6p42t8u
