</>Something gets lost in translation

By BILL HARRIS, TORONTO SUN

The audience laughed at the most dramatic scene. It was a very weird moment during the opening-night performance of the musical Bombay Dreams at the Hummingbird Centre on Wednesday. As one of the main characters lay dying after being shot, a portion of the crowd started laughing. That led to some audible discomfort, as others in the crowd turned to each other and asked, "Why is this funny?" Maybe there was some sort of wardrobe malfunction that was visible only to certain sections. Or maybe, because the wounded character was a eunuch who finally was being embraced by the man for whom the eunuch had an unrequited love, some of the patrons thought the scene was being played for laughs. Regardless, those awkward 20 seconds encapsulated why Bombay Dreams has been a tough sell through its versions in London (decent response), New York (critical disaster) and now as a touring show across North America (mild success to this point).

Bombay Dreams is full of references that will be much more meaningful to you if you're familiar with the hokey movies made in Bollywood, a term which refers to the massive film industry in India. On Wednesday it seemed as if half the crowd was really familiar with Bollywood and the other half was not, and the latter often was using the former as a gauge of how to react to certain things. Bombay Dreams pokes lighthearted fun at Bollywood movies, but a lot of it comes across merely as an assembly-line Bollywood movie. We couldn't help but be reminded of a story from the old SCTV television show, as cast members recalled trying to do a send-up skit about the sitcom Three's Company. No matter how corny we made it, the SCTV cast lamented, it just came out looking like a normal Three's Company episode. The lead character in Bombay Dreams, Akaash, is played by Sachin Bhatt, who looks like one of the Osmond brothers (but not Donny). Bhatt's character is likable in a bland kind of way. Also sort of bland but in a less endearing way is the object of Akaash's affection, Priya, played by Reshma Shetty. Among the more lively characters are Rani (Sandra Allen), Madan (Suresh John) and the eunuch Sweetie (Aneesh Sheth). The music was written by A.R. Rahman and some of the songs are decent. The sets and costumes are colourful. And there are a few good lines, delivered mostly by Rani and Madan. But overall Bombay Dreams comes across as okay, but just okay. And it's never a wonderful sign when the audience chuckles at the show's one serious moment. Bombay Dreams is at the Hummingbird through Sunday. --- BOMBAY DREAMS
