Nuvvu Nenu Prema - Feel the love
IndiaGlitz  [Wednesday, August 23, 2006]

Nuvvu… Nenu… Prema has a different and rare combination of artistes and the music director. Suriya, Jyothika and Bhoomika starrer Nuvvu… Nenu… Prema. Music maestro AR Rahman provided tunes to the lyrics. The audience will have high expectations on a music album that comes from the pockets of AR Rahman and he did not disappoint the audience as all the songs are quite melodious, with him rendering a melodious number. With Suriya's film 'Ghajini' proved a big hit in Telugu, with Jyothika and Bhoomika are well-known heroines among the Telugus, the industry as well as the audience have high expectations on Suriya's latest flick

1. Ammdadini Chusesthi Singers: Dr Siva Chidambaran, Gomathi, Naresh Iyer,Thedhi Kunjaramma, and Vignesh

The song is a mass song with folk touch. Veturi penned the song to suit the lip sychronisation of the Tamil original. Rendered by Dr Siva Chidambaran, Gomathi, Naresh Iyer,Thedhi Kunjaramma, and Vignesh the song has high values of mass rhythm. Maestro AR Rahman's music makes the audience enjoy this song in a rural backdrop. However, the song had the Tamil scent and the accent of some singers also added a different flavor to this music number.

2. Preminche Premava Singers: Shreya Ghoshal, Naresh Iyer

This is yet another song from Veturi with high literary values. It is a melody number and one can sit in a relaxed mood and enjoy this song. The music is quite mellifluous and like a lullaby for sometime and as the song progress, the music went up slowly. Rendered by Shreya Ghoshal and Naresh Iyer, this duet shows the love between the hero and heroine. The humming at the end of the song gives a different feel. Maestro Rahman had filled a different feel at the fag end of the song with a good humming by Shreya.

3. Newyork Nagaram Singer: A R Rahman

AR Rahman himself rendered this number. The song is melody-based and is a solo song with guitar and clarinet backdrop. The lyric had good literary value. The lyric reflects the feelings of an NRI. Especially the use of words like… "Newyork nagaram nidaroye vela nene vontari… chali o tuntari… Nalugaddala godala venuka' proves the real feel of loneliness of an NRI had when he was away from the homeland. The song is quite sweet just because it was rendered by AR Rahman himself.

4. Jil Jillumanna Prema Singer: Tanvil

This is the title song of the film. It is a chivalrous number with the heroine rendering the song in a playful mood. Tanvil lent her voice to the song and a part of the verse had a child's voice. The voice reminds of the noted singer S. Janaki, who used to change her tone while singing for a child. Now, Tanvil had mimicked a child's voice and it suited well. AR Rahman used bass guitar and trumpet in this number besides other instruments and the listener of this song could visualize that the song should have been choreographed in a light breeze or drizzle. But we have to wait and watch how it was filmed on the celluloid.

5. Maja Maja Singers: SPB Charan, Shreya Ghoshal

The lyric is a duet between the hero and heroine choreographed in a night mood. It has a quite husky voice that shows they were in a romantic mood. However, the music interludes give the choreographer some scope to use his skills in molding their romantic moods on the celluloid. The lyric reveals how the moods get elevated between a romantic pair.

6. Bangaraanni Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Suneela Sarathi The music beat in the lyric hints that the song is an item number in the film. However, Veturi maintained his literary values in this song. Shankar Mahadevan, Suneela Sarathi rendered the song. Rahman could give some mass appeal to the song through his music. It seems the song has lots of scope for the artistes to dance in a folk style.

7. Gandharvam Singers: Carolisa, Mohammad Aslam, Krishna, Sayanora

This is again a melody number under Rahman's music direction. However, the background score gave a chance to the audience to tap their feet. Rahman used bass guitar.and shehnai kind of sound in the backdrop, along with good drum beat. At the same time, the sound of broken glass gives the song some freshness and some enthusiasm to watch it on the screen. Moreover, it reflects the excellent recording of sound. The song was jointly rendered by Carolisa, Mohammad Aslam, Krishna and Sayanora. When you listen to the song keenly, the song also had good literary value in it… especially at the end of the song.

Sillunu Oru Kaadhal - a fine form of techno-orchestration
Vidya Anand  [Tuesday, August 22, 2006]

A R Rahman is back with Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. A fine form of techno-orchestration and stylized melodies is seen in this album. The album has Rahman's touch in every song. Rahman has used few fresh voices besides himself rendering a number.

Kummi Adi (Dr Siva Chidambaran, Swarnalatha, Naresh Iyer, Theni Kunjarammal, Vignesh)

Peppy number with fast beats and racy rhythm combined with open throated voice of Sirkazhi Siva Chidambaram with Swarnalatha providing a soft touch. It is a mass number. It gives a westernized feel.

Munbe Vaa (Shreya Ghoshal, Naresh Iyer)

The song involves minimal instrumentation. It touches the heart straightaway.

Maaza Maaza (SPB Charan, Shreya Ghoshal)

This one is a melody number that deals with pangs of love. It has heavy instruments. Both music and lyrics go hand in hand.

Machakari (Shankar Mahadevan, Vasundhra Das)

This is a racy number with a western touch. The beats are peppy and there is a good use of percussion instruments.

New York Nagaram (A R Rahman)

A song with weighted rhythms. The song has a catchy ditty and an agreeable melody with western touch and soft lyrics. This song is splendid and has a catchy rhythm.

Maaricham (Carolisa, Mohammad Aslam, Krishna)

The guitar and the drums give the song a perfect lift. The beats and the rhythms accompany the lyrics well in this number.

Jillunu Oru Kaadal (Tanvil)

The title song of the album. Vaali's touching lyrics combined with a groovy music are noteworthy. The song seemingly influenced by Jazz has Tanvil rendering it with rare felicity and feel.

The album is overall cool and loveable...

Remix bug catches Kollywood too
As each day dawns, remix and retunes of old hits are getting popular in Kollywood. A trend or rather the bug which hit Bollywood few years ago. Several private musical albums which were remix of yesteryear chartbusters has been well received by the music buffs there. Inspired by its success, a few from Tamil filmdom have been chancing their luck.

Yuvanshankar Raja set the ball rolling with Asai Nooruvagai in Kurumbu. Then followed A R Rahman's Thottal Poo Malarum (New). Promptly Yuvan came up with a peppy number En Asai Maithiliae(Manmadhan) following it up with the evergreen M K Thyagaraja Bhagavathar's number for Arindhum Ariyamalum.         It was the turn of young music-composer D Imman. The all-time popular Atho Antha ParavaiPolae got a fresh coating in Madarasi. Not to be outdone, Bharadwaj got into the act, remixing MGR's Thiruttu Payalae for Susi Ganesan's namesake flick. Interestingly, Silambarasan's forthcoming Vallavan has Yuvan settling for an amazing number of Malaysia Vasudevan Kadhal Vandiduchu from Japanil Kalyanaraman, with Imman following suit with the song Ennama Kannu for the movie Thiruvilayadal. Also for his Vaathiyar, Imman has gone for the old and gold yesteryear number Ennadi Muniamma.         Why the mad rush for remixes? It was time to do some soul-searching. According to Imman, the remix fever gripped private albums in Mumbai. 'Unfortunately, the pop culture is missing in Chennai. The ideal alternative is to try out in the films. Only in deference to the wishes of the director we go for the variation. Giving a sugared coating to the popular ones sound as a safe bet. One has to be extra careful, as tampering the originality will spell trouble.'

For Kumaran (23), an avid music-lover, 'it's cool to have remixes. They are generally foot-tapping. It's what the youngsters like. But they have to be very careful when choosing yesteryear melodies, which are still close to the hearts of music-lovers.' Echoing the same views, music director Bharadwaj, said, 'it's challenging to give a new shape to a popular song. But coming up with original tunes are more soothing.'

Fireworks are guaranteed when the two hottest hunks get together for a film.

Especially when their last outing, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi? was such a great success.

Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan star with Preity Zinta in Shirish Kunder's directorial debut, Jaan-E-Man.

Rediff Powerlist: Top Actors

The film is a romantic comedy, where Salman plays a stud and Akki dons glasses to feature in a geekier avatar.

The trailers have just hit the airwaves and producer Sajid Nadiadwala has apparently gone all out with the budget to make this a memorable promo, featuring top-notch special effects and AR Rahman's musicians from Chennai.

Readers' Pick: Top Actors

Jaan-E-Man is set to release on October 20, for the Eid/Diwali weekend.

Rahman returns to top Tamil slot with 'Jillunu...'
Aparna Nath  [Tuesday, August 22, 2006]

Chennai, Aug 22 (IANS) It is after a long gap that a Tamil album by A.R. Rahman has hit the market, and the "Jillunu Oru Kadhal" is certainly different. It has hit the right chord with listeners and captured the top slot.

The top five Tamil albums are:

1. "Jillunu Oru Kadhal" - Music: A.R. Rahman. Rahman has given an old-world charm to this album, a 1950s touch. And it is growing on people, especially the title song.

2. "Vallavan" - Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja. Yuvan Shankar Raja churns out album after album and most of them are huge hits. This too is quite popular, especially the song "Loose penne" sung by Silambarasan and Blaze.

3. "Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi" - Music: Sabesh-Murali. If the Rahman album reminds music lovers of the Hindi songs of 1950s, this album is a reminder of Tamil songs of the same decade.

4. "Vettayadu Vilayadu" - Music: Harris Jayaraj. With the film to be released next week, the sales of the album are sure to pick up.

5. "Aran" - Music: Joshua Sridhar. This time Sridhar is not enjoying the kind of success he had with "Kadhal", but the song "Mugilae" sung by Srinivas is a hit.

TOGETHER THEY ROCK! Band members of Aasma
They might appear 40 minutes late but they wear their celebrity status lightly. Channel V created Aasma, but Neeti, Vasudha, Jimmy and Sangeet have sustained it. They are late because they insist on make-up and jackets, after lunch, and before appearing publicly. They pose for cameras with a disarming enthusiasm. When their manager yells, "Give me action!" they respond with exaggerated pouts, open shirt buttons and long-live-rock-and-roll gestures. After the photo-shoot, they eagerly crowd around the camera to see their actions in images. Even after a short interaction, their cheer and merriment show their camaraderie. Sangeet Haldipur, wearing a black jacket, says, "It has been a progressive gelling." With the looks of a model and exposed chest, Jimmy Felix quips, "We are still learning about each other." Vasudha, in pink interrupts, "We love being together." Crazy gang In rapid fire Neeti adds, "We have a great chemistry." Jimmy with an underhand smile professes, "All four of us are literally mad." Vasu elaborates, "Pre-show and post-show we are mad." They are unfazed by the crash and burn of the previous Channel V discovery, VIVA. They take success in their stride and feel they will survive with the right priorities. They know that comparisons are unavoidable but feel that they have the passion to hold together against the odds. Considering the absence of airs and conceits, Sangeet's comment, "Even after three years it hasn't sunk in," seems believable. The band is quick to attribute their existence to Channel V. He asserts, "They are like our parents. They have created us, raised us and now have let us go." "From 1000 to 100 to 25 to eight and then four," says Neeti, with earrings jangling, describing the selection process of Channel V. At first, she recounts, a kilometre long queue of 3000 aspirants in Delhi deterred her. But the next morning she queued up for the auditions at 5 a.m. Jimmy, who travelled from Jaipur for the audition, had to sleep in his car when he came down to the Capital. Of Aasma he says simply, "It has changed my life." "But in Jaipur he was already a star," Vasu quickly adds, giving him his due. "He had a band. Only now his reach has increased." Discussing what worked in their favour over thousands of other candidates, they say that Channel V was looking for people with musical talent and onstage lan. Jimmy suggests, "They were looking for performers, not just singers." They laugh riotously and mock each other in good humour. They insist that politically incorrect jokes not be quoted. They are quick to mention their strengths. "We are four differently talented people," says Sangeet. Jimmy lays out their individual talents. "Sangeet is great at Jazz. Neeti can do both classical and Western. While Vasu can sing Alanis or a bhajan equally well." No celebrity airs Together, however, their USP, Neeti says, is, "We are not onstage celebrities. It is not a celebration for just the crowd, it is a celebration for us too." Sangeet, always the one for a quick byte, laughs, "To love the crowd you have to be the crowd." Their biggest challenge, interestingly, is corporate gigs; the biggest achievement is to get the businessman on the floor. For this under-25 band, Aasma stands for "youth, energy and warmth." While they have sung for Shamir Tandon (music director of Page 3 and Corporate) and for a forthcoming movie Mirror, their ardent wish is to work with their favourite, A.R. Rahman. "Let us sing!" they scream out to him and hope he hears.
