Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee win Star's Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards 2006

May 7, 2006 : The wait is finally over… The verdict is out…The journey that started over three months ago has reached a triumphant conclusion.. Over 9 lakh fans from India & 23 nations across the globe have declared their Sabsey Favourites. And 7 winners have walked away with the only true measure of their popularity with the masses: the unique gold brick trophy of the Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards.

The battles were close in practically every category, with leads changing hands practically, every day of the 30 day national voting period. But at the end, when the dust settled, this is how the picture looked:

The Sabsey Favourite Hero category surprised no one by boiling down to a battle between the Khans – Shahrukh & Salman, with Shahrukh Khan winning almost by a hair's breadth. It just proved once again that while Shahrukh is truly King Khan, the masses adoration for Salman remains undiminished despite all his recent travails. Bengali beauty Rani Mukerji was crowned Sabsey Favourite Heroine with competition from Aishwarya Rai.and Rani's cousin Kajol. The results are testimony to the enduring popularity of the Mukerji cousins Rani has had no releases since almost a year, and Kajol has had none after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2002. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's BLACK laid to rest all arguments about it being the favourite of only the classes with the masses declaring it a clear winner in the Sabsey Favourite Film category. In the Sabsey Favourite Naya Hero category the fight was really close between Kunal Kapoor and Kunal Khemu, with Kunal Kapoor coming through in the end. Doe eyed Vidya Balan won the Sabsey Favourite Nayi Heroine , pipping Katrina Kaif to the post. The Sabsey Favourite Comic Hero saw a hat trick as Paresh Rawal bagged the award for the third year in a row. The Sabsey Tez Sitara Award – the only award not voted in by fans, but where film industry experts pick out the rising star who has made the most strides in the last one year- went to John Abraham. He followed in the footsteps of Abhishek Bachchan who had won last year.

Last but not the least, an award that holds a special meaning for the lakhs of fans who voted in: The Sabsey Bada Fan Award: Mrs. Madhuri M. Madekar from Kalyan had participated in the Sabsey Bada Fan contest was crowned the Sabsey Bada Fan: the fan who voted the most number of times for the eventual winner.

Of course, it was not just about the awards. The performances were stunning as well. The night was filled with excitement as Trickbaby from London performed their megahits from Bluffmaster. What's more, the video of the song 'Nine Parts of Desire', featuring Abhishek Bachchan, was unveiled for the first time, at the awards ceremony. Udita Goswami & Kunal Khemu rocked the event as they performed a medley of Himesh Reshammiya songs - remixed to reflect the various musical forms of the country. So don't be surprised if you hear "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa" in Bharatnatyam beats or "Laagi Laagi" in Bhangra style.

Tanushree Dutta with Vinay Pathak & Suresh Menon of the Great Indian Comedy Show showed viewers what it would be like in 2006 when the all-time classics of Hindi cinema – Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, Don & more are remade. Hilarious skits on the theme with classic numbers from those films remixed made for compelling viewing. Fardeen Khan performed on the theme "The Many Moods of Fardeen". The show stopper was Hrithik Roshan; in a thrilling performance tracking his journey from 'Koi Mil Gaya' to 'Krrish'. This was also his first ever stage performance based on 'Krrish'. The whole performance was specially choreographed by ace choreographer Ganesh Hegde. The Host with the Most Arshad Warsi and his spunky wife Maria Goretti hosted the show and had the audience in splits with their one liners. Viewers will certainly have a treat when Star Gold telecasts the event on the 14th of May at 8 pm.

And it is the viewers themselves who have chosen the nominees as well as the winners of Star Gold's Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun 2006- the only awards show were winners are honoured for their popularity and not performances in a particular film. While the Sabsey Favourite Kaun Election Express covered 45 towns & 24,000 kms to collect almost 1 lakh votes from fans to create the nomination lists, more than 8 Lakh votes came in through sms, the internet ( ) and televoting to choose the final winners. In all, almost 9 lakh votes from India as well as countries as far flung as Afghanistan, Peru, Bahrain, Tanzania, Mozambique, Bangladesh , and of course, USA, UK & the Middle East were cast to choose the eventual winners. Today it all came together for the grand finale.

Get your popcorn ready for 8 pm this Sunday, 14 th May, when the spectacular ceremony will be telecast on Star Gold.

Inox were the Multiplex partners for the event, the official website and RED FM the official radio partner. All the trophies (the gold bricks) were crafted specially by Gilli. m

Disabled caricaturised in 'Tom Dick And Harry'

New Delhi - After 'Deewane Huey Paagal' and 'Pyaare Mohan', which got flak for ridiculing the physically impaired, comes another of the same genre. 'Tom, Dick And Harry' from actor-turned-director Deepak Tijori seems one more tasteless attempt at provoking laughs by caricaturising the disabled.

Tijori, however, insists he is not making fun of the disabled. He says he is instead concentrating on the lighter side of the lives of deaf Tom (Dino Morea), blind Dick (Anuj Sawhney) and mute Harry (Jimmy Shergill).

The story goes like this: Tom, Dick and Harry live together as paying guests and things go swimmingly until Celina (Celina Jaitley) arrives on the scene as their new neighbour. They try and impress her like any other normal young men, but she completely ignores them.

There is another girl on the scene - fisherwoman Bijli (Kim Sharma) who is completely besotted by Tom and loses no chance to express her feelings.

Bollywood potboilers are incomplete without a villain; so in comes Suprano, played by Gulshan Grover. Suprano is out to prove that he is the worst villain ever and the trio — Tom, Dick and Harry — unknowingly become the biggest hurdle in his business deals.

The wild goose chase between the cops who are chasing Suprano who is chasing Tom, Dick and Harry leads the film to the climax.

This is Oracle Entertainment Private Limited's second film and is produced by Ranjan Prakash and Surendra Bhatia. Himesh Reshammiya, who is scaling new heights with his singing, has composed the tunes of this so-called fun flick.

In the past, there have been some filmmakers who excelled in showing the trials and tribulations of the disabled — like Satyen Bose's 'Dosti', Gulzar's 'Koshish', Sai Paranjpye's 'Sparsh' and Mani Ratnam's 'Anjali'.

More recently there have been Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Black' and Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Iqbal', both remarkable studies in sensitivity towards the disabled. Other than them, however, most directors of the current lot have shown appalling callousness towards people with special needs.

Last year, Harry Baweja made a futile attempt to handle the delicate issue of a mentally challenged man in the box office dud 'Main Aisa Hoon' with Ajay Devgan in the lead role. Unfortunately, Ajay's character was reduced to a caricature and failed to have a right impact on the audience.

Sensitive audiences are looking to see more of 'Black' and 'Iqbal'. Looks like they are going to be hugely disappointed with 'Tom, Dick And Harry'.

Critic's I-view

Bollywood's most successful director-duo of present generation Abbas-Mustan rocks the marquee again with their tried and tested genre-suspense thriller. '36 Chinatown' makes their twelfth presence at the box-office and surprisingly their rising graph is attributed to the success of suspense thrillers. This Abbas-Mustan thriller is a suspenseful adventure with fast-paced plots and action, where resourceful but downtrodden heroes are pitted against evil and venomous traps of villains; the hero facing danger in the company of a small band of companions. Treacherous villain, who presents hurdles that the hero must overcome to prove his innocence, conceives this engrossing plot.

'36 Chinatown' is a contemporary suspense thriller with the age-old concept of "whodunit" factor with overlapping of plots and sub-plots. It uses the gambling paradise "Hollywood Casino" as the epicenter of the entire spine- chilling happenings. The caricatures of these happenings range from hotshot love couples to slapstick comedians who add spice and flavor to this intriguing and intimidating tale. The actors deliver the needful, but it's the ordinary screenplay that makes it an average affair. It will be the trendiest presentation from the director-duo where the film is loaded with bevies of beauties.

Spearheaded by the special appearances by Tanushree Dutta and Priyanka Chopra it fails to woo audiences. The film has a line-up of actors who form the missing links in this "whodunit" murder mystery. Paresh Rawal's comical histrionics score the most whereas Akshaye Khanna shows his strength in his author-backed character. Believe it or not, but fortunes were made for today's hottest celebrities (Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra) with films like 'Baazigar', 'Khiladi', 'Humraaz' and 'Aitraaz'. '36 Chinatown's success means make or break for many starlets and it includes stars like Shaahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and newcomer Upen Patel. Shaahid who has hat tricks of failures is groping for a surprise hit with his ex-flame Kareena Kapoor opposite him. After the debacle of highly publicized 'Fida' this comes as their second outing at the box-office. Unfortunately, it will be a disappointment for the Shahid-Kareena pair and they will have to wait for Priyadarshan's 'Chup Chup Ke'.

Unlike sexual deceit 'Aitraaz', wife-swapping 'Ajnabee' or vendetta saga 'Baazigar', this is a long suspense fiction with more than half a dozen protagonists involved in murder mystery suspense. This thriller also includes the mental histrionics of spy adventures from the Sherlock Holmes style of spy adventure from Akshaye Khanna.

'36 Chinatown' is high voltage murder mystery and it revolves around the murder of wealthy woman entrepreneur Sonia Chang (Isha Koppikar). Sonia is affluent and prosperous Casino owner and runs his gambling business in full strength. She has one love in her lif -- her baby boy Vicky. When he is suddenly missing, she is mentally upset and to get him back she offers astronomical reward money. Unfortunately, the fate has different plans and it includes her murder on one fateful day. Rocky (Upen Patel) is a rich socialite "playboy" who loves to flirt with beautiful girls. He has good relationships with Sonia and plays important role in her business life. Raj (Shaahid Kapoor) is a struggling actor who is finding difficult to survive in high-profile Mumbai life. Priya (Kareena Kapoor) is betrayed by her ex-boyfriend and like Raj she is fighting for her survival in the city. Luckily, both of them find Vicky (Sonia's child) and decide to divide the reward money. Raj finds true companion in Priya, and love chemistry between the two develops fast. On their arrival at "36 Chinatown" (Sonia's residence) they are shocked to find her dead.

In a state of shock they run from there but leave their suitcase and footprint behind. They try to get their suitcase back but are trapped and becomes the prime suspect of the murder. KK (Johny Lever) and his wife Ruby (Tanaz Lal) are there to spend their vacation in Goa. It's during their stay that they encounter another happy-go-lucky couple - Natwar (Paresh Rawal) and Gracy (Payal Rohtagi). Ironically, both KK and Natwar are addicted to gambling and lose all their money on the fateful night. It's during that fateful night that all of them visit Sonia's residence - "36 Chinatown". Investigating officer Akshaye (Akshaye Khanna) handles this case and his needle of suspicion is points towards everybody. Everybody has reasons to visit "36 Chinatown" but have no major motive to kill Sonia. The murder mystery goes thicker and it goes through turbulent faces of spine-chilling thrills and slapstick comedy. It would be unwise to declare the "killer" but the film holds the suspense till the last reel. Besides all the necessary "masala" the climax of the film is a big let down. Once again the director has failed to rope in good ending to high-voltage action drama.

click for larger view
'36 Chinatown', is promoted as suspense thriller but lacks the high-impact suspense quotient. The biggest disappointment comes in the field of narration and the preposterously planted climax. The film promos promise it to be loaded with gloss and sheen but high glamour quotient can't be the success formula of murder mystery. It seems the director-duo are highly impressed by the success of comical hits. The second half of the film makes it a slapstick entertainer rather than a murder mystery. Even the characterization lacks the penetration. Despite all the important ingredients of contemporary potboiler, the climax of the film is a downer.

click for larger view
Shaahid Kapoor tries to tickle funny bone but disappoints in his over- confident attire. Kareena Kapoor is wasted as glam doll and hardly delivers anything promising. Johny Lever's comical acts are simply average. Paresh Rawal is the impressive of the lot and it shows in the sequence where he hides his whereabouts from Akshaye Khanna. The veteran comedian has delivered the needful and deserves accolades. Tanaz Lal fits into the character well. Payal Rohtagi gets the best possible screen appearance in her sagging career. She has revealed her physical assets but her footage has limitations. Newcomer Upen Patel is another promising factor of the film. Despite the fact that his voice is dubbed he shows promise in all aspects. Akshaye Khanna's spy act is commendable and is the only saving grace among the lead performers.

Himesh Reshammiya's music is the biggest plus point of the film. It has given the desired thrust to film promotion but it's pity that songs are not well coagulated with the script. It's ridiculous to view two songs within a gap of five minutes ("Aashiqui Mein Meri" and "Jab Kabhi"). Even the rest of the tracks ("24x7, "Dil Tumhare Bina") are unnecessarily accommodated to improvised the glamour quotient of the film. After 'Aksar' and 'Aashiq Banaya Apne' the successful tracks of Himesh Reshammiya have been under utilized.

Producer Subhash Ghai and Abbas-Mustan's first presentation 'Aitraaz' was groundbreaking success but this disappoints. The film suffers from poor scripting, shoddy screenplay despite high face value, melodious music and aspiring names. The promotion of the film will create craze in early days but later the film has to rely on good mouth publicity. sy-hype-low-impact.html
