The Granthi (Discourse) part in this Padabali is in Bengali. Those who don't know Bengali will not understand and thus neither enjoy the total Nritya Natya. This article I wrote about 4 years back for HMV. And they too wanted it for the same purpose. So that, those who are not good in Bengali, can still enjoy the Nritya Natya. I may not be exact or too good with the words in the actual Granthi. It just gives you an idea as to what is being said in the discourse. So that the song series gives you more sense. The songs are all in Brajabali and anyone who knows Hindi can understand them. The download links are provided at the end. It's quite long so has been divided into 4 parts.

BHANUSINGHER PADABALI

Bhanusinher Padabali is one of the earliest works of Gurudev. He adopted the pseudonym "Bhanusingha" and wrote his series of poems called Bhanusingher Padabali, which undoubtedly echoed the Vaishnav Padabali. He was inspired by the Vaishnav Padabali and Poet Jaidev in composing this series of poems. Here we find Tagore experimenting with Brajabali. The human soul and the Divine soul, is represented by Radha and Krishna here.

Later Prof. Bhudeb Choudhury, history professor at Vishwabharati (now retired) wrote the Granthi (discourse) part and turned it into a complete Nritya Natya. The voice in the Granthi part has been done by Partha Ghosh and Gauri Ghosh.

Poet Jaidev had made a great influence on child Rabindranath. It was not the radiant epic poems of the diety but the mysterious Sanskrit words which made their mark on this child mind. Bidyaboti (Gurudev's wife) came after this period. The language in the mind of the young poet was Brajabali. With this unknown language and the radiant music inside him, this poet with passing of time went into his own world of mystery. And that gave birth to a new poet of the Vaishnav Padavali, Bhanusingha Thakur. But was Bahusingha just music or a meaningless tune? Gurudev's view about Bhanusingha "The bud that is hidden in the seeds of a plant, the mystery that is yet to be discovered below the surface of this earth".

That's why his mind that day went towards Padabali's tunes. In the later part of his life he could finally find the meaning of this mystery. "Who so ever we love, we get to know Vishnu (Ananta) in him. To get to see and realize Vishnu (Ananta) even in animals is another name of Love. This deep knowledge is there in all Vishnav Dharma followers." Viashnav Dharma may have anything but in this Bhanushigher Padabali we find nothing else but this Leela of just pure Love.

Gahan Kusum Kunja Majhe, Mridul Madhur Banshi Baje

Singers : Bani Thakur & Barnali Ghosh

Chorus : Suchitra Mitra, Konika, Sumitra Sen, Nilima Sen

Krishna's bansuri has started playing in the Vrindavan. Among the fragrance of the flowers, chirping of the birds, humming of bees, the full moon night turns into a delight. All the Sakhi and the Gopi's heart gets filled with the love for this Shyam. "Aao Aao Sakhi Brinda, He Rab Sakhi Shree Govinda". And then love filled Radha gives her call for him before anyone else.

Sawan Gagane Ghor Ghana Ghata, Nishitha Yamini Re.

Singer : Konika Bandhopadhyay

In this difficult path of love tryst, in this drunken state of shravan, in this journey of love, thats the Raj Path. When tears flows down the eyes in sadness, then comes to the door of our heart, the Chariot of our lover. In Radha's journey of love this is the most auspicious moment and she can't wait for the call. Leaving aside all hurdles, Radha reaches the grove for union with her Shyam. But in this grove of love there's just rain of sadness. The Gopi's seeing Radha's condition now comes to Radha as her sisters to console her.

Sunal Sunal balika, Rakha Kusums Malika.

Chorus : Konika, Nilima Sen, Bani Thakur, Barnali Ghosh

Radha is inconsolable. Seeing this the Gopi's gets agitated and perturbed. They sing out…

Hridayaka Sadha ne Sawal Hridaye, Kanthe Sukhawal Mala.

Singer : Nilima Sen

Radha's is heart broken. It's nothing but heart burning for her selfless love. Kishore Bhanusingh's love gave it a new life. Bidhaybati say's "He enveloped the same heart burning ache of Radha on himself and made a garland of that sad story."

Bhara Badar, Mah Bhadar, Shunya Mandir Mann

Singer : Konika Bandhopadhyay

Radha's heart burning ache is beyond explanations. Mother nature the progenitor herself today has become hard-hearted and merciless just like the unfortunate fate of Radha. In this month of Bhadra, her heart is full of ache like the overflowing river. Still her love can't take defeat. Tearing this quiet void of sea runs the Chariot of love. Radha's inner turmoil is calmed down and she becomes tranquil and motionless. She makes a promise to herself. In the love of the estranged lover she'll give away her life in this temple of love. With the thought of Kaliyacharan (Shree Krishna's feet) she decides to go down the dark path alone. She sings out a song for Shyam.

Maraneri Tuhu Mamm, Shayam samaan.

Singer : Suchitra Mitra

This oblation to love finally ends. Love finally comes back to her. Beyond the sea of her heart-aches, comes to Radha's groove, the music of Shyam's flute.

Satimir Rajni Sachkit Sajni, Shunya Nikunja aryanya.

Chorus : Bani Thakur, Konika Bandhopadyay, Suchitra Mitra, Nilima Sen, Barnali Ghosh

Radha's hards days are over and comes the auspicious day. Hearing the flute her sakhi (friend) comes and tells her that Radha see, see your Shyam has come atlast.

Sajini Sajni Radhika Dekh abhu Chahiya, Mridul Gaman Shyam Aawe Mridul Gaan gawiya.

Chorus : Konika Bandhopadyay, Suchitra Mitra, Nilima Sen, Bani Thakur, Barnali Ghosh

Radha is very happy today. She comes to her Madhav Temple, to her lover and self dedicate herself to him. She sings out a gentle and pleasant song for her Shyam.

Bajao Re Mohan Banshi

Singer : Nilima Sen

In Radha's dark groove of love has come back new spring. The traveler of love has finally found the adobe of love and tenderness.

Aaj Sakhi Muh Muh, Gahe dig Kuh Kuh

Chorus : Konika, Nilima Sen, Bani Thakur, Barnali Ghosh

In this way finally Bhanushinger Padabali comes back after getting the knowledge of the mystery of this love, but, a bit unmindfull. Even in his dreams he would still try to find the complete mystery of this. It never ended in this love filled life of the poet. Even in his last days of his life he said, "It's dark outside, winds are blowing, there's thunder outside, doors are shaking, so does the windows. When I see outside I see Supari and Coconut trees are shaking their heads. It reminds me the same path." That day in place of Radhika's picture there was someone else in the eyes of the poet. "That beautiful girl with kajal in her eyes, in blue sari walking tenderly. Today in this dark stormy night I want to remember her." Her morning, her evening, her talks and her emotions, her glance tells him the Bengali girl he knew 300 years back. The thought of this Bengali girl brought him to the poems of Jaidev. In Jaidev's poem Radha's is always Shyam's consort. But Kabi Guru knows her to be the complete woman. When these two meet just as Ganga and Yamuna the poet goes back to that time and again gives out a tune of that time.

Sunderi Radhe Aawa Bane, Brajar Mane Mukut Mane.

Singer : Suchitra Mitra

Chorus : Bani Thakur, Nilima Sen, Barnali Ghosh, Konika

Thanks Barnalidi. The english translation helped a lot.

Songs are great. Had heard it many times but now with the translation of the discourse it is much much better.

It's a master Piece of gurudev I must say...

Just a minor correction. The singer's name "Barnali Ghosh" should read "Banani Ghosh".

Banani Ghosh is able disciple of Padmashree Late Kanika Bandyopadhyay. Kanikadi is legendary and direct disciple of Gurudev Tagore who gave her that name.

Bhanusingher Padabali is a very unique writing of Tagore as it is in the dialect Brajabuli. He was mere 20 year old when he wrote this. There is a nice story about it. When he first showed the manuscript to one of literary giants of Calcutta, Tagore told him that he found this in the library. The person reading this was admiring profusely. When Tagore said that he himself wrote it, the giant said" Oh it is not bad." He wrote this anecdote in his autobiography.

Clap

Bannili di - I don't know how to thank you for the marvelous post.
So much of my memories are attached to Bhanusingher Padabali.
First time I listen to it - (on LP!!) at a friend's house at 4 am in the morning after whole night of study. We were studying on the roof top of a 4 storey house - and Ayan (my friend said - listen to this. While Suchitra Mitra's 'Maraneri Tuhu Mamm, Shayam samaan" started playing – the sun came out – the mind of a 16 years old took new journey that day.

Long after that I read 'Prothom Aalo' by Sunil Ganguly and came to know the backdrop of the songs (written more dramatically than normal biographies).

Again thanks a ton – this article took me for a nostalgic ride.

I called up Ayan (who is in San Jose now) to have a chat just on this.
