A man of dreams with obsession for fortune can become an Ambani
If a journalist criticizes somebody, people give an opinion that he has written in a good manner. But, if he praises, people tend to think otherwise. There would be feathers attached to the rumors if the person praised is in a respectable position, which would not be there otherwise. There would be no such rumors as the person praised here is not amidst us as he expired three years ago.
This praise goes to Dhirubhai Ambani.
I don't know how many of you have visited Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City. It is a place to visit at least once in a lifetime. You need not visit this place if you have already been to NASA. I mean to say that this 150-acre technology city in Navi Mumbai is a place that can make us remember NASA. Developments taking place at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City can make the whole country proud of itself. I got a glimpse of Dhirubhai Ambani's dreams, vision, India's technological superiority and the explosion of information technology in the coming days when I went on a short trip to this place day before yesterday.
Even though we can say that India is a poor and developing country, it may be noted that there is no dearth for the rich. There are people like Lakshmi Mittal who spend up to Rs. 500 crores to get their daughters married off. There are also people like Manikchand's & Subroto Roy's who spend hundreds of crores to celebrate their grandson's birth or invite dignitaries from various walks of life for his son's wedding. Hundreds of crores are kept aside by people like Jayalalitha & Farooq Abdullah to celebrate their adopted son's wedding or as expenditure for their daughter's honeymoon. People tend to spend in crores to celebrate their engagements, thread ceremonies, et al in all the cities.
But, only one among the hundred crores can build a knowledge city like this and we can call him as Dhirubhai Ambani.
Chorwar is a small village in Sourashtra of Gujarat with a population of around 1000 people. Hirachand Ambani was a lonely teacher who also doubled up as a Headmaster for the school. He earned a salary of Rs.18 out of which a family of 6 members was run. It was only a small house with only two rooms. Mother Jamunaben spent her entire life in brining up the children. Ambani was born in the same place. Nobody ever had a thought that he would become a founder for the country's largest company. Hirachand used to tell his son "I was only a good teacher for the whole of his life and nothing else. More than that I could not grow and did not dream to grow. But you don't become like that, dream big and turn your dreams true."
Father's words would have changed the mindset of Dhirubhai to achieve this much. As you are entering Knowledge City, you can see a slogan saying – Having small aims is a crime! The result of Dhirubhai's saying is probably knowledge city. Dhirubhai had a vision to build India as an information technology leader and achieved this when he was alive. He built this in a span of three ears. Dhirubhai always said – Meeting the deadlines is not good enough, beating the deadlines is my expectation. The city was built in a span of 18 months with a budget of Rs. 24,000 crores. Dhirubhai's "Think big, think fast, think ahead, ideas are no one's monopoly" can be experienced in this city.
Reliance Infocomm's, Internet data center, Call center, Application Development Lab, and National Network Operations Center are housed in this city. At any point of time there would be at least 10,000 people working at this place with a research and development center that cannot be found in any country of the world. These activities are spread across an area of 22-lakh square foot with 14 buildings in this city.
You all may be aware that the Indian trains are running from the past 150 years. In spite of this only 45% of the country is covered by its network. There are many district headquarters that have not seen a train until now. We took around 150 years to build a network of the existing 72,000 km. There is a dedicated railway minister assisted by another two with a dedicated budget spanning thousands of crores, and officials. Each railway zone has a budget that exceeds state budgets. In spite of it railways has achieved less. But, Reliance Infocomm has established 90,000 km of optic fibre network in the country running across 1200 cities and towns covering 90% of the population. The company also owns a network of submarine cable running from Japan to America. I mean to say that the company has a majority share in the world's telecom network. A goal, which can be achieved by only a government, but not achieved, can be seen in the making of this knowledge city. Tele-conferencing, E-Medicine, mobile banking, Internet connectivity, call center, mobile network and other hundred's of other applications can be achieved by all these facilities. Let us take an example of Reliance mobile phone itself in which you can watch TV, check Emails, play games, listen to songs, pay bills, listen to stars (astrological), send MMS, and not only these we can also speak. Even mobile phones in countries like America and England do not have these many features. Probably you can spend a day without your wife or your girlfriend, but it is unimaginable to spend a day without Reliance mobile. There may be a day when your mobile phone can sense what you are thinking and can perform the operation. For example you remember to wash your clothes while you are sitting in the office. Your mobile phone would sense this and send a signal to your washing machine at your home to perform its activities. Research is being conducted at this level in this knowledge city for the future. You may be sitting at your office longing to watch the cricket match. Sit back and relax, your TV would record your favorite programs, use it as a computer, surf internet, listen to radio, play MP3, DVD, perform telebanking, do video conferencing, video shooting etc. which is not far enough. Knowledge city is the center of all these developmental activities. All the things that can be achieved with the help of Reliance mobile phone are developed at this place. There was a time when only countries like America or England had facilities and expertise to host an Internet Data Center. But, this knowledge city has got this facility to store your data in a secured manner. It's Disney World for entertainment, Pentagon for defence, NASA for space and its Knowledge City likewise for information technology. We should be proud that such a place is there in India. You can probably sneak into the Prime Minister's office, but it's impossible at this place due to the security. Whatever may be the family's feud, fight between Mukesh-Anil or their relationship with politicians. It would have been started with a commercial interest itself, but this knowledge city is a great gift given to the country by Ambani. Lakhs of people are employed by this and outsourcing activity taking place from abroad. There are activities taking place at this place that can make the country proud. If India can control information technology industry, it is possible only in the hands of Ambani and only at this Knowledge city.
It is due to the vision of Ambani who dreamt of making it big even when he was eating Bhelpuri on the shore of Choupati in Mumbai. Ambani used to say "If you have an idea of making profits, don't expect others to invite you" and left his footprints while achieving this.
