|Mandira proves popular|
Now that Mandira Bedi is such a popular figure, especially on television and the fact that she does make a differ ence to any show, the Music Academy Hall recently was full to see her in an another avatar, that of a theatre person. And to her credit she does do a good job given her natural propensity to somehow convey everything right from her heart. And in Anything But Love directed by Vikranth Pawar she does add value to a rather pedestrian play no doubt adapted from the American play Double Act.
Of course it has its moments of grim truth couched in humor about the state of marriages and the man-woman relationship. But other than that, it is yet another attempt at understanding why the institution of marriage is so complicated and sometimes despairing.
Seema (Mandira Bedi) and Anish (Samir Soni) are divorced but they simply cannot seem to do without each other despite her being involved with Shekhar and he with Tina, Reema, Divaya, to name a few. They fight even after being divorced but invariably end up being together realising somewhere faintly that this is probably true love.
The twosome who meet at restaurants telling the new entrants in their lives that she is with a friend and he has gone to meet his mother they are irresistibly drawn only to have spats and arguments. Life then does come a full circle with marital bliss and a quarrelsome divorce being two sides of the same coin.
Both Mandira and Soni are very natural on stage, the chemistry seems real, peppered with old love songs they create the impression of love being the many splendoured thing apart from the American influence being very palpable.
Going in favour of the overall appeal of the play are the discreet sets and lighting that change fast between scenes without too much of a gap allowing for the general mood to be uninterrupted unduly. But a classic it is not.
