Tugging on her hair, Aditi started complaining about her feet. "I never realized my feet were so gigantic! I'm a baboon!"
Rolling her eyes, Saanjh yelled out a reply from her own room, where she was still changing. "Oh shut up Aditi! You're feet are fine. No one is going to stare at them anyway."
"How do you know?"
"Good Lord," Saanjh muttered under her breath. Taking a final look at herself in the mirror, she pushed her hair back and gave her reflection a smile. "I look pretty nice if I do say so myself." Laughing at her childishness, she walked out of her room and into Aditi's. "Your feet look fine Aditi. What are you talking about?"
"What would you know? You're feet aren't...." Before she could continue, Aditi gasped. "Oh wow."
"Oh God, tell me there is no defect in this outfit," Saanjh squealed, inspecting herself.
"No, no. That's not why." Dragging Saanjh to her mirror, Aditi stood behind her and whispered, "You look awesome."
A glow surrounding her face, Saanjh smiled. "Thanks. That's very sweet of you and I think you look astounding too." Turning to get a proper look at Aditi, she said, "And this color actually suits you very well. Goes with your complexion awesomely."
"Thanks," Aditi replied, obviously content with Saanjh's compliments.
"Listen, hurry up if you want to go with me. Tarush said that I should see him before the fair officially starts. He wants to give all the members of the festival committee thing a final word. And then I have to get Ishan too."
"But my feet."
"Oh come on Aditi. Your feet are great. Just put on some shoes and hurry up."
Rushing to the front closet, Saanjh pulled out her own sandals. Strapping the black heels on, she called out to Aditi for the last time. "You coming or what?"
"Right now I'm in a what position but I'm still coming," Aditi replied, walking out with her shoes on. "How do I look?"
"Fabulous," Saanjh said, truly meaning it.
"Good. Now let's go. Such a slowpoke," Aditi said acting as if she was the one who had been gotten ready first.
"Oh shut up."
Hardly acknowledging that Saanjh and Aditi had come, Tarush continued speaking. "I must say that you guys have done an excellent job within these past few days. Most people could not have done this in the limited time we had, but we apparently have done it and I must say that we have done not a good, not a nice, but a beautiful job! I appreciate your cooperation greatly and I absolutely love how you went to the furthest extent to accomplish the tasks I assigned you." Glancing at everyone to make sure they were all listening, Tarush smiled and yelled, "Let the party begin!"
As it was to be expected, everyone started cheering, laughing, and whistling.
Sighing, Saanjh looked at Aditi and said, "I am so glad that this is going to be over today. Another thing I don't have to worry about."
"True," Aditi agreed. "Well anyway, as Tarush said, let the party begin!"
Covering her face, Saanjh whispered, "Aditi, do me a favor and never say that again."
Scrunching her nose, Aditi started laughing. "I promise I never will."
Both laughing, Aditi and Saanjh went to the boys dormitory to pick up Ishan.
Knocking on Ishan's door for the twentieth time, Saanjh put her hands on her hips, exasperated. What was he doing in there?
Hearing the commotion, Shweb came out and smiled at Saanjh. "You're going to be a daily visitor here, aren't you?"
Blushing, Saanjh laughed. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize I was making so much noise."
"It's no problem. And by the way, Abhas and Zahir took Ishan to the fair already," Shweb added.
"You must be kidding me," Saanjh said, feeling like an idiot.
"Nope. I guess he forgot to tell you. Anyway, I'll see you later."
Ishan, Abhas, and Zahir did not even bother telling me. How sweet of those rascals.
"Can you believe it? They didn't even tell us. Ishan had just told me yesterday that pick him up at 11. And then when I go to pick him up, he's not there. I mean, I am waiting outside, knocking like an idiot, and this guy Shweb comes and tells me, 'Oh hey, they left'. I was so embarrassed! All the guys in the building probably think I have no life."
"Well forget about them and look straight ahead. Ishan, Abhas, Zahir, and Koena are standing right up front."
"Oh joy," Saanjh said not even looking up at them.
"Well, you can yell at them now," Aditi said with a shrug.
"Yea, whatever," Saanjh replied, not even angry anymore. Looking ahead, she saw Koena who was talking, like usual. "Why does Koena always look like a goddess?"
Sighing, Aditi shrugged. "I don't know. It's no surprise Zahir and like 600 other guys are in love with her though."
"Hm," Saanjh agreed. Right at that moment, she saw Ishan laughing at something Zahir had said. "Oh God."
"What?" Aditi asked, following Saanjh's eyes. "Oh wow," she said when saw what Saanjh was looking at. "He looks hot, and I mean hot."
"I know," Saanjh said with a sigh. "Aditi, I know you're going to hate me but I think I am falling in love with him."
Giving almost a forced smile, Aditi tried to laugh. "Saanjh, he's handsome, I agree. But you love him? That I don't agree with."
"But I just don't think he's handsome Aditi. His whole personality is so alluring. I'm more attracted to him everyday. He's sweet...he's caring." Lowering her voice, she said, "He's wonderful."
A bit angry, Aditi added, "He's blind."
Shocked at Aditi's sudden statement, Saanjh tried to figure out what to say but she was speechless. Aditi was never this ruthless. Before she could think of something appropriate to say back, someone came behind her and clasped their hands around her eyes.
"Damn, how did you know?" Koena asked, stomping her foot.
"Wild guess," Saanjh said trying to laugh. It was pretty hard though because Aditi's words still stung.
"You look so pretty!" Koena whispered in awe. "Gosh, both of you do."
"Oh look who's talking," Aditi said rolling her eyes. "You're like the queen of beauty."
"No, I'm not," Koena said, modestly. "Hey, let's go to Zahir and all of them."
"Man I really want to eat pani-puri!" Abhas was saying.
"I like tikkis better," Zahir added.
Before Abhas could disagree, his gaze fell on Saanjh and he wasn't able to take it off. Blinking to make sure what he was seeing was real, Abhas sighed deeply and tilted his head to the side. Should I tell her something today, he asked himself. Or just leave things the way they are?
"Hi guys," Saanjh said with a smile.
"Hey, you three look awesome," Zahir said, staring mainly at Koena.
"Thanks," they all replied in unison.
"You three look pretty nice too actually," Aditi said, inspecting all three of their outfits. "Sherwanis actually look pretty good on you guys. Who would have known?"
"Oh shut up," Abhas said, smirking.
Walking up to Ishan, Saanjh smiled. "You look quite dashing today."
"Thanks," Ishan, said smiling back. "I don't know what I look like so I can't agree or anything. How do you look?"
"Um...pretty hot," Saanjh said, laughing.
"Why is that no surprise?" Ishan asked.
"Oh come on, I was joking."
"I have a feeling that you're right anyway."
Laughing, Ishan sniffed the air. "Oh wow. It smells like junk food heaven."
"Hey can we get something to eat?" Koena asked. "I'm starving."
"Yea, the food stalls seem to be ready. You can see like smoke in the air," Aditi said looking up.
"Then what are we waiting for?"
"I didn't know you like pav bhaji so much," Saanjh said, staring at Ishan wolfing it down.
"Oh believe me, I don't like it. I love it. It's like my life," Ishan said stuffing another bite in. "What do you like to eat?"
"Both pani-puri and pav-bhaji. I love the taste of the kanji water so much. It's so cool, yet so spicy. And I love how my tongue is like on fire for a couple of seconds when I drink the water. As for pav-bhaji; I don't love it as much as you but I do like it anyway. I remember I used to make it when I was in high school because it was my favorite thing in the world."
"See, I'm not the only one!" Ishan said.
Walking up to them, Abhas nudged Saanjh's shoulder and smiled. "So what are you up to?"
"Eating," Saanjh replied. "Want?" she asked, beckoning to her hand, which held a piece of pav.
Taking a bite straight out of her hands, Abhas shrugged. "It's pretty good actually."
Wishing he could see what was happening between Saanjh and Abhas, Ishan almost bit his tongue. How come I didn't hear him go forward and pick up the pav? Did he eat it from Saanjh's hands? Does he like Saanjh? What the hell is going on? Why do I even care?
Trying to appear nonchalant, he continued eating. But inside, all these questions, and several more, were eating him up.
"Hey, I heard there's going to be a dandiya thing. I love that stuff," Abhas was saying.
"Yea, I love when Gujarati people dance with dandiya sticks. It looks so beautiful and organized," Saanjh replied. "I tried learning from some one when I was younger and I think I even got it, but now I don't remember anything."
"Hey Saanjh, do you mind if we go around this place? Like just go through the booths or whatever?" Realizing he was being a bit selfish, Ishan continued, "And if you don't mind, can you explain to me what's going on? I mean I would ask Shefali or Piya but I don't want you to go look for them or whatever."
"No problem," Saanjh replied. What more could she want?
"Thanks." Ishan hoped Abhas would go somewhere else while Saanjh escorted him around the stalls.
"Abhas do you want to come with us?" Saanjh asked, out of politeness.
Realizing it would be pointless to come along, Abhas shook his head. "Nah, I'll just go with Zahir and them. I'll see you later." At least, he'd be able to stare at her from afar. If he went with them, he wouldn't be able to express his feelings and he wouldn't be able to stare at Saanjh, without her noticing.
Praising the Lord, Ishan congratulated himself on this small victory. "Shall we?" he asked, extending his arm.
Laughing, Saanjh held onto his arm and off they went amidst bright colors and joyful laughs.
Walking quietly, arm in arm, Saanjh wished they were somewhere more peaceful. Maybe the shore of a beach. In the middle of the night. Where they would walk hand in hand. The moon caressing their faces gently. Whispering little phrases to each other, and him putting his hand over her own heart. He would hold her hips gently while they walked. And occasionally, they would look into each other's eyes.
Saanjh's fantasy stopped right there. Looking down at her feet, she remained silent. She was a fool for dreaming of such.
"So Saanjh, where are we?" Ishan asked.
"Oh...um, we're walking in the middle of an aisle full of clothes. They're hung all over the stalls, you can't even see the person selling them. Most of the stalls have bright clothing. It's really nice actually." Leading Ishan to a certain stall, Saanjh reached out for a smooth cloth and rubbed it's cool texture against Ishan's cheek. "How is it?"
"Awesome," Ishan replied. "It's so...soft. What is it?"
"A shawl. It's actually really beautiful. It has no print or anything. Just plain and simple. And yet it's so elegant," Saanjh admired. It actually went pretty well with what Saanjh was wearing. "And it's black, my favorite color," she added with a laugh.
"Do you like it?" Ishan asked.
"Do you want it?"
Catching on, Saanjh shook her head. "No, no. I was just saying..."
"How much is it?"
"Ishan, I don't know. Let's walk on," Saanjh said trying to drag Ishan away.
"Excuse me, whoever's selling this stuff!" Ishan called out.
"Yes?" A student, Akheel Roy, walked over and looked at the shawl Ishan was clutching.
"Hey man, how much is this?"
"400 rupees," Akheel replied.
"Here's my wallet. Take the money out," Ishan said handing over his wallet.
Smiling at Saanjh, Akheel took out 400 rupees and handed the shawl over. "Should I pack it or do you want to wear it?"
Saanjh ignored his question and looked at Ishan. "Ishan, I really don't want it."
"Oh shut up," Ishan said, waving his hand carelessly.
"Saanjh," Ishan said holding onto her shoulders. "You have done so much for me. Can't I buy you a shawl?"
"Ishan, Ió," Saanjh persisted.
"Sh...what are you wearing?" Ishan asked.
"Clothes?" Saanjh replied, confused.
"I mean, what color."
"Oh, it'll go with her outfit real well," Akheel put in. "It's getting chilly anyway, so maybe you should wear it now instead of me packing it."
"Perfect." Taking the shawl from Akheel, Ishan put it around Saanjh's shoulders and smiled. "How does it look?" he asked Akheel.
"Beautiful," Akheel replied, handing back Ishan's wallet.
"Shall we continue?" Ishan asked, extending his hand instead of his arm this time.
Putting her hand within his, Saanjh said thanks to Ishan. "That really wasn't necessary."
"I'm sure you look gorgeous in it Saanjh. But anyway, let's stop talking about the shawl. Why don't we talk about...your past boyfriends."
"Oh. Well, you're going to have to switch to another topic because there's nothing to say about this one."
"Because I've never had a boyfriend," Saanjh replied simply.
"Oh wow. So you're all pure," Ishan said.
"No first kiss either?" Ishan asked, trying to find out something about Saanjh's love life.
"Nope. My first kiss is yet to come. I'm sure you've shared many kisses though," Saanjh said, a bit envious.
"Uh...well not really. I mean maybe a couple here and ther but not many. You know how it is," Ishan said with a shrug.
"No actually I don't," Saanjh said.
"Ok, ok. Next topic. You know, I just realized we know nothing about each other. I mean about the things we like, etcetera, etcetera."
"True. What would you like to know about me?" Saanjh asked.
"Let's start with simple stuff. Um...what's your favorite color?"
"Black. And don't tell me black is a shade or the absence of light or something. I believe it's a color."
"I didn't even say anything," Ishan said defensively with a laugh. "But anyway, mine is yellow."
"How about your favorite sport?"
"I used to like archery a lot before but now I don't really play," Ishan said pointing to his eyes. "I still like cricket though. Absolutely great. And yours?"
"Don't really have one but if I have to choose, I'll have to say soccer. Season?"
"Favorite actor and actress?"
"I have a couple of favorites. I like Amitabh Bachchan of course, then there's Shah Rukh Khan, and then Zayed Khan, and of course John Abraham. I like Salman Khan too. As for actresses, Kajol and Sushmita Sen."
"Hey, I like Amitabh, Shah Rukh, and Kajol too," Ishan said. "I love their voices. How about your favorite type of music?"
"Instrumental. Or actually anything that's sounds nice."
"Well said. I agree. And how about favorite food?"
"Let me guess, yours is pav bhaji," Saanjh said laughing.
"You know me so well," Ishan said with a shrug. All of a sudden, Ishan felt something go in his eye but was unsure of what it was. Taking off his glasses, he rubbed his eye and continued the conversation. "But what's yours?"
Mesmerized by his eyes once again, Saanjh replied softly, "I don't really have one. Anything that tastes well, I guess."
Ishan was about to reply when he heard a flash. "What was that?"
"Veer, what was that for?" Saanjh asked stopping to a halt.
"Sorry Saanjh. Actually this is for two reasons. One is that we need to have pictures on this fair for the school newspaper. Second, we're actually looking for the best-dressed and best-couple for the end of the fair. So far, you're the best couple if I do say so myself."
Blushing, Saanjh covered her face. When she put her hand back down, Veer took another picture.
"Sorry, you looked cute when you were blushing!" Veer laughed, running away, towards more people.
"Hey, you're blushing?" Ishan asked. "How cute."
"I'm not blushing," Saanjh replied, blushing even more.
While Ishan was teasing Saanjh, Abhas was gazing at Saanjh. His eyes had been following her for almost half an hour now. Behind booths, hiding under clothes. He just could not keep his eyes off of her today. He had liked Saanjh for a long time but why was this attraction growing since Ishan came? Was he jealous of Ishan?
Of course. There was a growing attraction between Ishan and Saanjh. And he could see it.
All six of them back together, Koena ran towards the bhangra competition. "Oh wow! I wish I could just join them!"
Laughing, Abhas said, "Go ahead. Who's stopping you?"
"Right, and then be made fun of."
Huddled around the bhangra teams performing, Koena, Ishan, and Zahir decided to stay there while Abhas, Aditi, and Saanjh went to the dandiya.
"Hey Saanjh!" Tarush said, as they came closer. "Good job with the decorations!"
"I got done with them on time because of Abhas," Saanjh said gesturing towards him.
"That's good. Hey do you want to play dandiya?"
"Um...I don't know how to."
"It's ok, I'll teach you," Tarush said grabbing Saanjh's arm. "Hey Abhas, you and Aditi can play together."
"You know my name?" Aditi asked.
Turning around, Tarush replied, "I know everyone's name."
Giving all of them a pair of sticks, Tarush led Saanjh to the middle and started teaching her how to play. "Hit it, move back, turn, and then hit it again. Simple."
Understanding Tarush easily, Saanjh got the hang of the movements and was soon laughing and spinning as if she was an expert at the stuff. When all the couples got into a circle, faster music started to play and everyone started to switch partners every 15 seconds. Dancing until her feet were hurting, Saanjh realized she had never had so much fun in her life.
Tired, Saanjh stooped and went back to the bhangra competition. There she saw Koena dancing on the stage, while a bunch of guys were watching her. Koena didn't even acknowledge the guys and continued moving to her own beat.
How did she get up there? Saanjh asked herself. Then again, it was Koena. She could do anything.
Moving towards Ishan, she tapped him and smiled. "Having fun?" she yelled over the noise.
"Yea, everyone seems to be having the time of their life!" Ishan yelled back.
"Yea, but are you?"
"I'm with you! What else could be better?" Smiling, Ishan reached out for Saanjh's arms and swayed them in the air. "I love dancing! I guess it's the Punjabi blood!"
Ishan and Saanjh were moving with the beat when Tarush took over with a microphone in his hand. "One, two, three. Testing. Okay. Now how should I start? Um, let me begin with thank you. Thank you everyone for coming and making this thing so great! It's with your support that these things become a success. I'd like to thank everyone who helped me and I congratulate them also.
And now, for the grand finale! We are going to announce the best-dressed male and female and the best couple! And that applies to only boy and girl couples. Not boy or boy or anything." Giving a slight cough, Tarush continued, "And after we give them their prizes, everyone's favorite DJ, DJ Archit will rock this place! Now give it up for Veer and Suhani, who will announce the winners for best dressed!"
While everyone was clapping, Veer and Suhani came on stage arm in arm and took the microphone from Tarush.
"You all look great guys but we have to choose one male and female for this thing. So here it goes! Drum roll please," Suhani said, looking towards Archit. "And the best-dressed male is.....Faisal Khan! He's wearing a white cotton sherwani with a gold brocade scarf and I must say he looks absolutely ravishing!" As she was clapping for Faisal, she handed over the microphone to Veer, who announced the best-dressed female.
"I've seen lots of beauties today but one of the best was.....Piya Oberoi! She looks absolutely lovely in her ghagra-choli. It's no surprise it's one of the bimbo tramps," he added under his breath.
Suhani glared at Veer, and quickly took the microphone, laughing loudly.
"Um, well. Piya is wearing a beautiful peach and turquoise georgette mermaid lengha and it looks absolutely great on her!" Handing back the mike to Tarush, Veer and Suhani walked off.
"And now to announce the best couple! Here are Rishi and Anvesha!"
"Hey guys, hope you're having fun! The best couple is....Anvesha?"
Taking the mike, Anvesha smiled and yelled, "Ishan Mehta and Saanjh Malhotra!" Turning around, Rishi and Anvesha pointed to a projection screen where the technology people had connected a digital camera to a computer, which was connected to the projection screen. It was a picture of Ishan and Saanjh when Ishan had taken his glasses off. His grey eyes looked beautiful, and both Saanjh and Ishan were talking with soft smiles. "Well that is definitely a cute couple! Come on up guys!"
A bit embarrassed, Saanjh tried to hide in the crowd but Zahir and Koena pushed Saanjh and Ishan towards the stage. Leading Ishan onto the stage, Saanjh smiled at Rishi and Anvesha, who were clapping.
"Congratulations guys!" Rishi said, shaking their hands. "All of the winners get gift certificates from music and clothing stores! Give them a hand! And now for DJ ARCHIT!!!"
Right at that moment, firecrackers burst in the evening air and everyone looked up at the sky and started clapping. Archit put the music on and soon everyone started swinging back and forth. In other words, dancing.
Saanjh took Ishan's hand and they both walked off the stage. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, Ishan asked, "Hey do you mind dropping me to my place? I'm kind of tired now. Sorry."
"No, it's no problem. Actually I wanted to go home now too. They're all going to start drinking and stuff soon. It's better to leave before the good things turn bad. Let's go."
"Aren't you going to tell Aditi and them?"
"No, they'll know we've left. Don't worry about it."
"Whatever you say."
Not for the first time, Saanjh felt uncomfortable as she escorted Ishan into his bedroom. "So, um...do you need for me to help you with anything?" she asked.
"No, it's ok. Oh but we didn't finish our conversation," Ishan said.
"What conversation?" Saanjh, asked confused.
"When we were getting to know each other."
"Oh. Did you have another question?"
"Yes, actually I did Saanjh." Coughing, Ishan asked, "Have you ever fell in love? Or thought that you did?"
"What kind of question is that?" Saanjh asked, looking down, her mouth drying up.
"A simple, straightforward one," Ishan said with a shrug. Please say you haven't Saanjh, Ishan begged in his mind. I don't want you to say you have been in love before.
"Ok then I guess I should give you a simple, straightforward answer Ishan."
"Yes, I have been in love."
"Well actually, I wouldn't say I have been in love. More like I am falling in love," Saanjh said, glad she had given Ishan a hint.
"With who?" Ishan asked, his hopes getting high.
"That's for me to know...and for you to find out," Saanjh said softly. Moving up to Ishan, she whispered, "Good night Ishan. Sweet dreams." Turning around, she walked away, making Ishan sweat, even on such a cool night.
