Television's funniest people

Between woeful tales of Parvati and Tulsi, the audience today is left with more frowns than grins. To remind those who prefer light-hearted comedies to tear-inducing soaps, here are five shows guaranteed to tickle your funny bone

Instant Khichadi

Supriya Pathak, Anang Desai, Vandana Pathak and Rajeev Mehta

What's so funny? A sequel to the hugely popular Khichadi on Star Plus, Instant Khichadi features a different kind of joint family — they're funny!

In the Instant version of Khichadi, the quirky Parekhs  become overnight millionaires and try to find ways to spend their wealth.

Instant Khichadi chronicles how the family suddenly tries to change its lifestyle, habits and find new friends. In the newer version, Hansa and Praful are madder than they were in the original, while Bhavesh Kumar is hungrier, Jayashree is funnier and Babuji is angrier!

Why we love it: The trademark gujju flavour of the family — Hansa and Jayashree with their hilarious accents and Babuji's constant hammering of Praful.

Watch it: Tuesday, 9 pm, Star One
Rating: ***

Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai

Satish Shah, Ratna Pathak-Shah, Rupali Ganguli and Sumeet Raghavan

What's so funny? The Sarabhais are the stereotypical rich family. Indravardan (Satish Shah), a retired business tycoon, constantly amuses himself by taking off on snooty wife Maya (Ratna Pathak-Shah), a high-flying socialite, whose bone of contention is her daughter-in-law Monisha (Rupali Ganguli).

Sahil, the eldest son and Monisha's husband, is a man with a heart of gold and is often caught in the middle of arguments between his mother and wife.

A hilarious sitcom about the two Sarabhai families living in adjoining flats — the parents v/s their son and daughter-in-law. With its saucy tongue-in-cheek humour and sarcasm, Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai is a sophisticated urban comedy from the makers of Khichadi.

Why we love it: The on-screen chemistry between the incomparable Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah.

Watch it: Monday, 9 pm, Star One

Rating: ****

The Great Indian Comedy Show

Manini De, Suresh Menon, Cyrus Sahukar, Monaz, Gaurav Gera, Kunal Vijeykar, Vijay Patkar, Delnaz Paul and Vrajesh Hirji

What's so funny? A brand new concept, the show features a strong ensemble cast, including some of the best-known TV comedians and one celebrity host per week.

The ultimate gag show with a dash of modern Hindi stand-up acts — the highlight of each episode is the group of hosts who perform skits, stand-up acts and filmi song-and-dance routines.

The show is probably India's first spoof show that pokes fun at other shows and popular characters from television and film. Don't miss the actors' take on the saas-bahu sagas. A complete laugh riot!

Why we love it: Hilarious gags and spoofs on popular telly serials and movies. Also, the one-liners are pretty amusing.

Watch it: Monday to Thursday, 11 pm, Star One

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Mihir Misra, Vishal Singh, Kushal Punjabi
What's so funny: Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is about three young men — Aditya, Chetan and Deepankar — with distinct opinions on life, love and relationships. The show focuses on the women in their lives, the relationships that result thereof and the chaos that ensues.

Why we love it: The youthfulness of the three characters and the funny situations that these guys get into each time.

Watch it: Monday to Thursday, 10 pm, Zee TV

Rating: **

Office Office

Pankaj Kapur and others

What's so funny? One of the longest running comedy shows on television, Office Office has been making audiences laugh for more than three years.

Pankaj Kapur plays Mussadilal, a common man struggling against the system. Every episode is a journey through India's bureaucracy and describes how in the end Mussadilal returns home a defeated man.

Why we love it: Definitely Pankaj Kapur! The actor has smoothly carried the show on his shoulders and kept the audience in splits.

Watch it: Saturday and Sunday, 8 pm, SAB TV

Rating: ****

Double dose tonight

Batliwalla House No 43

Batliwalla House No 43 is a licensed adaptation of the hugely successful British series, The Kumars At No 42. Batliwalla House No 43 will witness a quirky Parsi family, called the Batliwallas, host a chat show with a difference.

The family has converted their workers' toilet area into a wacky makeshift studio where they are all set to interview two celebrity guests each week.

The idiosyncrasies of each member of the family will make for some great comic moments while giving viewers the opportunity to meet with some of the biggest celebrities from various walks of life.

Watch it tonight at 9 pm on Sony

LOC — Life Out of Control

In the heart of London is Mini Asia, and in the heart of Mini Asia is The Peace restaurant. despite the name, there is no peace within.

The reason being the tension between India and Pakistan. The head cook is Gurpreet Singh Malick — an Indian, while the headwaiter is a Pakistani called Chand Mallik.

Whenever there is tension between India and Pakistan, it results in a war between Gurpreet and Chand and the restaurant is turned into a war zone.

The owner of the restaurant, Simon York, has no other alternative but to curse his British forefathers for partitioning India. Simon cannot throw the two sworn enemies out because his restaurant's clientele love Gurpreet Singh Malick's curry and the mughal treatment that Chand offers while serving them.
