These days, when you go to your tailor for a new outfit, expect him
to look at the television screen for inspiration rather than a
Whether it's Kaahin To Hoga or Kasautii Zindagi Kay, women aren't
just tuning in to catch up on the lives of their favourite
characters, they're also trying to figure out if their new kurta will
look good with Kashish-type sleeves or whether a Prerna-type blouse
will suit them.
Tailors around Malad say that TV stars are now more popular than
Bollywood actresses when it comes to setting fashion trends.
The younger generation obviously prefers younger characters like that
of Kashish, while older women prefer to copy the style of Savita bahu
(Kyunki…) and Prerna. The most-watched serials are the most aped ones
too, with formal outfits such as saris and salwar kameezes the most-
However, when it comes to men, tailors say Bollywood stars still rule
If Shah Rukh Khan's kurtas are in, Salman's short shirts are being
ordered by the dozen. Men seem to order whatever catches their fancy;
copies of both formal and casual clothing are requested by customers,
say tailors, some of whom admit to watching movies to predict the
next fashion trend.
We asked a few tailors who the most copied stars are.

Adil Nawaz's professional requirements don't just include knowing his
fabrics; it also involves watching a lot of TV. Says Nawaz, "Most of
my customers demand clothes that the characters from different
So Nawaz shuts shop at 9 pm everyday to go home and catch up on the
fashion trends on Star Plus. And what are the current favourites
amongst his customers?
"Kashish from Kaahin To Hoga is an out-and-out winner with everyone,"
he says, adding that her long flared sleeves are very much in demand.
Nawaz reveals, "I get around 10 customers everyday who want their
outfits to be made like that of Kashish."
Another popular character is Prerna from Kasautii Zindagi Kay. "Women
like her short kurtas and churidars. I think they like to identify
with her strong character," opines Nawaz.
Film stars are not really preferred by Nawaz's clients. "Film stars
hardly wear any clothes today; what can one copy from that?" asks
Tip Top Tailors
Kashish is once again the hot favourite with customers at Vinod
Sarvaiya's shop, but Sarvaiya says it's her sari blouses that are
most in demand.
"People like Kashish's short-sleeved blouses with big borders.
The blouse also has a low back with tie strings," explains Sarvaiya.
We spot at least four such blouses hanging in his shop. Tip Top gets
approximately six to eight orders a month for "Kashish style"
Prerna's new-look stand neck blouses are fast becoming popular
Another favourite is the Prerna blouse. "Prerna has now started
wearing saris after she has grown old in the serial and many women
prefer her stand neck blouses," reveals Sarvaiya, adding, "Even the
blouses that Savita from Kyunki… wears are appreciated by our
For bolder customers, Kamolika from Kasautii Zindagi Kay sets the
style. Explains Sarvaiya, "Women ask for Kamolika's strappy blouses
for marriages or special functions."
And when it comes to Bollywood, "Kajol's backless blouses, which she
wears on TV shows and to parties are also preferred," reveals
Bollywood is still the first choice for men's fashion

The box office barometer is still functioning at Pratham when it
comes to setting a trend.
Says Pradeep Shashwat, an employee of the store, "In this shop
anything that Shah Rukh wears sells. Currently, the kurta he wore in
Kal Ho Naa Ho is in great demand. We have already made eight pairs of
the same outfit."
It takes the store approximately five days to make an outfit and
charges for aping the stars are understandably higher.
"We get almost 25 orders every month from customers requesting for
replicas of outfits they have seen in different movies," reveals
Shashwat. Another popular choice is Dilip Kumar's sherwanis from
Employees here say they actually watch films to foresee trends. Says
Shashwat, "We predict which outfit will be appreciated and make a few
copies of the same outfit. We have never gone wrong in our
Jan Kalyan Nagar
Shah Rukh Khan may be King Khan at the box office, but he comes
second in the fashion stakes to Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar at
Laxman Shetty's tailoring shop for men.
Says Shetty, "Mujhse Shaadi Karoge is still a hit with a lot of
people. Many people still ask for short kurtas and short shirts that
the duo wore in the film." Even Salman's double-breasted suits from
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai are still in vogue, adds Shetty.
Shetty previously worked for Madhav Men Modes in Bandra, which has
stitched clothes for biggies like Anil Kapoor and the late Amrish
He says lots of people come to him every month with requests for
clothing inspired by the movies. Shetty takes around three days to
stitch the shirts from a photograph.
It's a big compliment: Balaji fashion designer
Nim Sood, the fashion designer for Balaji serials, says, "It's a big
compliment for me that the styles I create are going down so well
with the masses.
Many people have come up to me and told me that they would like to
have a Prerna or Kamolika kind of wardrobe for themselves."
She adds, "I also think Kashish is very popular and hence many young
girls want to dress like her."
It feels good to be dressed like a star
Says Aijaz Rizvi, resident of Jan Kalyan Nagar, who recently got
himself short shirts and kurtas. "I like the long kurtas that Amitabh
It almost inspires me to wear kurtas. I also got a few short shirts
stitched like the ones that Salman Khan wears in Garv and the short
kurtas that Akshay Kumar wears in Mujhse Shaadi Karoge," he says,
adding, "Many people have complimented me on the kurtas and it feels
good to be dressed like a movie star."
Rizvi has approximately 15 short kurtas, 10 short shirts and eight
long kurtas that have been inspired by Amitabh's kurtas in Baghban.
