MUMBAI — The Dubai-based man who last month allegedly threatened actress Mona Singh — star of Sony's hit soap Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin — was released on bail on Friday for lack of evidence.
"I'm no gangster," a cheerful Mohammed Zunaid Abdul Latif Khatri, 26, said outside the 37th Esplanade Court. "I am a cashier in a Dubai hotel and I was forcefully taken to Mumbai when I have not threatened anybody."
However, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate V.P. Tawre ordered Khatri to surrender his passport to the police and to stay in India until given permission to leave. Mona Singh had filed a complaint on September 24 after receiving an extortion threat over the phone from a gangster known as 'Vicky'.
The Anti-Extortion Cell discovered that Vicky, a Dubai-based gangster, had also made extortion threats to several city businessmen.
"Look, Anand, I'm calling from Nairobi," he reportedly told one of his victims, a Dr Anand of Sion. "If you don't pay Rs2.5 million, my boys will shoot you in your clinic."
Anand filed an extortion complaint and police laid a trap for Vicky's 'boys' in September. They arrested three men: Saifuddin alias Nasir Abdul Majid Shaikh, Faisal Ismail Nakhva and Faizal Salim Thakur.
During interrogation, they confessed that 'Vicky' was none other than Khatri, a gangster acting on behalf of Faheem Machmach of the Chhota Shakeel gang.
Khatri was then deported to Mumbai from the United Arab Emirates on September 26.
Khatri's advocate, Rajesh Srivastav, said: "Khatri is innocent and that is why they were unable to prove the case in a court of law."
