BOYS will be boys
Apart from a comeback album, members of India's only boy band are dabbling in TV
Ameta Bal
Mumbai, February 13: Fooling around with a couple of musical instruments, a cricket bat and each other, these four guys—Karan Oberoi, Chin2 Bhosle, Sherrin Varghese and Siddharth Haldipur—pretty much fill their boy band shoes.

The unoriginal name aside, A Band of Boys does all that a boy band is supposed to do and some more. Not only do they look pretty for their teeny bopper fan base, they also deliver in terms of mush ballads and pop lyrics on their album, boyish shenanigans on stage and dance routines on the videos. But these boys score slightly higher than their international counterparts because of one reason. You might never see members of Backstreet Boys or Westlife exhibit their histrionic abilities on TV, but these guys have no qualms about extending their talents to yet another field of performance. Two of them—Oberoi and Varghese—have appeared in TV serials like Jassi Jaisa Koi Nahin and Bhosle has been hosting TV shows.

'Even though people often voice their doubts about our diversification, the fact that we all have individual careers and are known faces on an additional platform, lends more equity to the band,'' says Bhosle, who considers the band his passion and priority but has hosted many shows on TV. ''And no, we haven't split,'' he adds.

The band, with the exit of Sudhanshu Pande, is down to four members, and has released its second album Gaane Bhi Do Yaaron, which comes two years after their debut Yeh Bhi Woh Bhi. ''There's an advantage to having an even number of people in the band. If earlier we used to get one-and-a-half lines to sing each, now we at least get two complete ones,'' jokes Varghese, who has acted in soaps on Sony and Star One. The album cover has all four fighting to grab the mike, owing to the fact that the band isn't fronted by one man, even though as Oberoi puts it, ''It's the silent one who gets most fan mail.'' Haldipur, the only non-actor in the gang, gets four index fingers pointed at him.

The first video from the new album, of the song Nain Katari, which is already on air, is a spin-off from the climax scene of the all-time classic Hindi comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. With their easy banter, the guys who were brought together by Hari Haran and Leslie Lewis to form the country's first boy band, seem to be having a blast. Between the four of them, they manage to cover everything from the harmonium and piano to guitar and percussion. While Haldipur is a pianist, Oberoi knows his way around a harmonium and Varghese and Bhosle play the drums and the guitar respectively.
