TV shows are away from 'realty' Via DNA
Almost all shows on TV today have their lead protagonists living in lavish palatial houses.
While 'realism' is the buzzword in Bollywood, it seems to be quite the
contrary on the small screen. Fiction shows in a bid to get larger than
life, seem to be completely veering off realism, especially in matters
of 'realty'. Never mind if the protagonist is rich or poor, almost all shows have them living in lavish palatial houses.
Actor Karan V Grover aka Karan of Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, says,
"Being a Mumbaikar, I can totally relate to the problem of space in the
cities. The grand sets we see in TV may be reflective of the rich and
famous staying in smaller cities that do boast of sprawling ancestral
palaces or bungalows."
Says Sukesh Motwani, fiction head, ZEE TV,
"Zee as a brand has always believed in telling socially relevant
stories where the social context is far more authentically depicted. Be
it Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, 12/24 Karol Bagh, Pavitra Rishta,
Hitler Didi or the upcoming Afsar Bitiya, all the protagonists of our
shows and the settings are depicted in a very true to life way."
However, producer Rajan Shahi feels that lavish houses echo the
aspiration of the viewers. "On TV, audiences definitely like to see the
grandeur, but it must blend with the characters and story like it did
for Yeh Ristha Kya Kehlata Hai where the family was rich one based in
Udaipur. The show set the trend of big lavish houses but those who
copied were not so successful."
Producer Siddharth Tewary
however believes that if serials stick to showing an authentic setup, it
will only help the show. "TV shows definitely show opulence as good
content and drama sells, but if a show is presented in a practical set
up and backdrop, the audiences connect much faster," he explains.
Actor Karan Mehra also echoes a similar thought. He says, "The kind of
shows on TV right now are based in smaller towns. So it is completely
relevant. But I would think twice if they showed a middle class
character live in a house as big as a bungalow in a city set up."
Actor Romit Raj says, "TV shows do not depict reality that's why soaps
are called fictional shows, but just to add glamour TV shows can't show
anything irrelevant in the name of lavish, as they might lose audience's
interest."
