Chapter 2
It was a few days after the Arnav and Lavanya breakup, and Khushi still felt odd coming to RM. Lavanya wasn't her student anymore and she felt her lack of presence keenly. However, that was the least of her worries and in her role as chef, she found herself making jaleb's more often than not. Her Amma-ji and Buaji had approached her again about marriage and Khushi felt the pressure. She knew it was what they all wanted for her, but she knew in her heart of hearts that Shyam wasn't the one she would choose to fulfill the role of her husband.
"Mein aur Shyam?" Kushi still couldn't get her head around the thought, as she munched on a jalebi. If someone had asked how many she had eaten, she wouldn't have been able to tell them.
"Tum aur Shyam Kya?" Came a voice from behind her.
Kushi swiveled around to see Arnav standing directly behind her, in a maroon jumper and black casual pants. She hadn't realised it was so late in the day and that he'd return from the office.
"What?" Was her articulate response to his question.
"Whose this Shyam your murmuring to yourself about?" Arnav was glad that he had finally found a great opportunity to question her about Shyam, after days of wondering how to ask her.
Stunned that he had bothered to ask her a question in a civilized way, she answered simply, "He's my family's tenant".
"If he's just a tenant, why are you linking his name with yours?" Arnav said aggressively, the jealousy he couldn't ignore ate at him. Why are you lost in thoughts of him, he wanted to ask.
"It's none of your business", Kushi shot back.
"It is my business when your not doing your job because you're day dreaming. Also, it would be helpful if you didn't eat us out of house and home". He pointedly looked at the plate of jalebi's that sat on the kitchen counter half empty.
Kushi blushed. She hadn't realised she'd demolished the plate of jalebi's, which she had made for the family.
Arnav realised antagonizing Kushi wasn't the best way in which to learn more and tried again.
"You seem worried, is everything okay at home? Is your Babu-ji ok?" Him asking after her Babu-ji threw her. She couldn't keep up with his mood swings. Khushi was surprised that he even cared if she was worried. But then he had kept her on, even when Lavanya had left, since he understood her financial situation and that had been generous of him.
"Babuji's doing okay at home, his health hasn't worsened." Khushi was hesitant to tell him about the marriage proposal. She didn't know why. She didn't want to accept that one of the reasons was because him. That his face came to mind whenever she thought about why Shyam wasn't the one for her.
"Did you need anything?" After the last incident they had in the kitchen, Khushi realised it was best to ask him what he wanted. She didn't want a repeat of him collapsing.
"I've just come for water", with that he went and got himself a glass and left the kitchen, knowing that was all he would get out of her this time. He had learned enough for now to make some enquiries of his own.
With him gone Khushi returened to her work, making more jalebi's. Hopefully, it would help ease her mind and the fast beat of her heart, by the time she was done.
