CHAPTER 4 (b)
Astonishment, surprise and worry churned inside Geet's mind when they landed. Geet was highly worried, she didn't know for how they were staying and how she was going to manage without any supplies on a single nightie. They took a taxi from the airport to hotel and were checked in quickly to their room, thankfully. Once inside, with Maan's entire luggage, Geet decides that she can act embarrassed all the way to hell but her husband wouldn't lift a finger until she says it loud and clear.
G - Ahem.. I need some medical stuff right now coz of my situation which I explained in the flight.
M - You didn't bring any with you?
Geet pursed her lips into a thin line and replies.
K - I didn't get time to pack.
Maan made a clucking disapproving noise, while Geet quickly wrote what she needed on the hotel stationary, and handed the folded paper to Maan, dying from mortification inside.
Maan took the slip quietly and went out, coming back in 21 minutes with what she required [Geet timed him.], his expressions more harsh and colder than ever.
Grabbing the bag from his hands Geet runs and shuts herself in the bathroom. Repeatedly assuring herself that the whole incidence was not her fault in the least.
After a long bath and strict self counseling, Geet ventures out of bathroom and sees Maan sipping his drink as he lounged in front of the T.V., determined to remove the former uneasiness Geet asks.
G - Why are we here?
When no reply came Geet decides to be more specific. Maybe he was taking her too literally.
G - Why are we here in Mauritius?
Another no comment, infact he didn't pause the slightest while drinking, this was not how Geethad planned the convo, determined to get an answer Geet asks again.
G - Huh? Huh?
Maan slipped his drink again, how difficult is it to make a girl understand that he doesn't want to talk? Very.
Rolling his eyes Maan finally looks at his irrepressible wife, not wanting to reply.
G - Huh?
M - Huh? What? [He asks getting irritated]
G - Why are we here?
M - Honeymoon.

Maan looks at his frozen up, shocked wife with satisfaction, while she stared open mouthed at him. Gasping for air like a fish she stutters ... You... you... you... on.. on.. a.. HONEYMOON.. with.. with... me...?
Maan raises an eyebrow, he had been joking ofcourse. Was she that dumb?
M - I have a project here.
G [cries out] - Then why did u say it's a honeymoon?!!!
Maan shrugged indifferently. It was a joke, how can't she get it?
Just like he himself had a hard time explaining to himself the uneasy heaviness he had felt in his chest at the thought of her alone in house.. Last night he had finally came to the decision that he was bringing her along coz he doesn't want her to stay unprotected and alone with, those drinking fools downstairs in his absence... I am just being a dutiful husband. Coz.. she isn't my honey and we won't be mooning over each other.
G - How many days would we stay here for?
M - Some months.
Maan gives the fuzzy reply, pouring himself another drink and secretly observes his wife sigh with resignation.
About 10 days had passed and casual routine was quickly developed. Maan usually kept an alarm but his wife was dutiful for one good virtue and would wake him up with a ready cup of tea. Leaving for work at 8, Maan would generally be home by 9, this wasn't his show now, he was working with other people who didn't believe in working into the night. So when he came back at 9, they would order dinner, or rather his wife would, or maybe she made it in the small attached kitchen, he didn't know or actually cared, he was ok with whatever was put before him and they would have dinner together. It was strange, having dinner with someone. Maan wasn't sure what he felt about it so he just categorized it as strange. Later he would have a drink and watch some TV, his wife would sit at the other end of the sofa or go to sleep. It was better when she slept; it kept her from making annoying comments and disapproving noises. He generally went to bed at 11.30, but couldn't really sleep because she had an annoying habit of pinching his arm in her sleep. Sometimes he would feel irritated by the physical touch ,and would feel like waking her up but would decide against it because her pinching him incessantly whole night in sleep was better than her constant chattering. Enduring her soft pinches on his rugged skin was not even a task for him, he had endured much more than that. So he would easily drift into sleep and then a whole new day would start.
Coming home after another exhausting day at 9 Maan expected to smell the usual aroma of food, but it was strangely absent and the suite was strangely quite too.
Where is she? Is she ok? Did someone break in and hurt her? Did she just leave?
Maan thought as he stealthily entered and checked for intruder and Geet. Finding signs of none.
With every step he took in his surprise, anger and worry increased in cycles. Within 10 minutes inside the empty suit Maan badly wanted to hurt someone bad, the things which churned inside his heart made him feel things he hadn't in a full decade.
Drawing control from a deep part of his soul, where he locked away everything else and felt nothing but static calm, Maan forced himself to relax a little and think. Maan calls the front desk reception.
M - This is Maan Singh Khuranal from room XXX.
The mention of his name and room got him immediate and deferential attention.
M - Did my wife leave a msg before leaving?
Receptionist - Actually sir earlier today she did make the odd request for delivering a pair of jeans and a shirt to her room, and she paid in cash although we offered to bill it your name and that was all the contact we had.
Maan pauses for a moment to process that information, as far as he knew she didn't have any cash, then... Maan focuses his attention on the room safe and sees the door was slightly ajar, walking over his sees that it was empty.
She had swept him clean, she had waited for him to lose his control a little around her, make a small slip and then she had very quickly and efficiently made a royal fool out of him.
Receptionist - Umm sir? Would you be needing anything else?
M - Did you see her leaving?
The chill in his voice frightened the receptionist
Receptionist - Actually sir.. We haven't seen much of your wife and none of us recognize her so...I'll ask if anyone saw her leaving.
Maan disconnects the phone and stares blankly at the empty vault. Growing colder by the second. She had used him. A woman had used him again.
Maan flexes his fingers imagining them wrapped around a certain dainty neck and slowly squeezing the life out of her. :She is no better than what he was ;but at least he was honest and didn't rob his mistresses Opening the safe door fully, he makes himself a big stiff of Palinka(it's a drink that could be drunk neat and with highest alcohol content) and settles down to stare at the empty vault making his mind learn the lesson of trusting innocent looking girls.
