Sania Mirza is now ranked 98th in the world after winning the $140,000 WTA Hyderabad Open !! She came into limelight after entering as a wildcard and going down to American superstar Serena Williams at the Australian Open Grand Slam, 1-6 4-6 in 57 minutes but more than lived upto her expectations as she matched the six-time Grand Slam champion stroke for stroke midway through the second set.
Sania Mirza gave the best performance by an Indian woman on the Grand Slam Tennis so far had been a second round appearance, by Nirupama Sanjeev (Vaidyanathan), who achieved the feat in the 1998 edition of the Australian Open.
Hyderabad's teenage tennis sensation, Sania Mirza has won her maiden Wimbledon and Grand Slam title when she triumphed in the girls' doubles event, partnering 13-year-old Russian Alisa Kleybanova.
