MAUSAM Quick Movie Review: Shahid Kapoor scores

The actor manages a standout performance, one that should overshadow his Jab We Met role

It may be the first time Pankaj Kapoor is directing a full-length Hindi film, but he gets it more right than many who are seasoned in the craft. Mausam, the new release of the week, starring Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, is not the perfect film, but is indeed most impressive, with fine work from everyone involved – the director, the actors, the cinematographer, even the music director (though he did have a little help from history with Abhi na jao chod kar andAjeeb dastaan hain yeh). The story spans time, as all the press releases have said, as it describes the love story between Ayaat, a Kashmiri refugee girl (Sonam Kapoor) and Harry, an air force pilot (Shahid Kapoor). Significant events in Indian history define the ups and downs in this romance – the two young people stealing glances at each other, separation because of war, stolen glimpses of one by the other and their eventual, final coming together during, of all things, the Gujarat riots, occasionally tends to be jerky and contrived, but on the whole more interesting and absorbing than some of the plots that we have suffered through over the past few years. Shahid manages a standout performance, one that should overshadow the Jab We Met role, thank god! He could make us forget the handsome young Rajesh Khanna inAradhana, if he was a little taller – but his height does not matter as he grows in power and acting ability with almost each scene. Sonam looks gorgeous, with kind of the same air that the old-world heroines had, but needs to learn to emote with the eyes rather than the mouth. A surprise and wonderful package is Aditi Sharma as Rajjo, the Punjabi girl in Shahid's life; it would have been good to see more of her. We saw the film once; and are thinking that maybe we need to see it again, if nothing else to watch the hero that Shahid has grown into!

Why Mausam May Not Cover Its Cost

September 26th, 2011 by Komal Nahta

There's a misconception in the industry that Mausam has cost Rs. 60 crore to make, promote and release. The fact, however, is that the investment of Sheetal Talwar and Eros International in the film is not more than Rs. 42-45 crore. Given this, the first day's opening figures weren't as bad as the trade was making it out to be. Actually, it is not the entire trade but a few loud-mouthed people in the industry who were going on and on about how the film had opened to disastrous houses. Probably, they were unaware of both, the first day's collections and the total cost of Mausam.

The Mausam Economics (Mausam Movie Stills)

Mausam Economics

The cost of Mausam, as mentioned, is Rs. 42-45 crore without counting Shahid Kapoor's remuneration for the film. Satellite rights have fetched around Rs. 12-13 crore and the music rights must have sold for around Rs. 5 crore. Thus, Pankaj Kapoor's film requires at least Rs. 25-27 crore from Indian and overseas theatrical business to break even. As Mausam has raked in Rs. 22 crore (all-India net collection) over the first weekend, the weekend business (distributors share) is only Rs. 11 crore. Therefore, it may not cover cost. And the cost reportedly does not include Shahid's remuneration as he charged nominal fee only. If we include that, loss will be bigger.

Mausam: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Film

September 21st, 2011 by Team

Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor's epic love story, Mausam, is all set to hit theatres on September 23. Here are 10 things you didn't know about the film:

Too Many Retakes For Shahid Kapoor

The shooting process was arduous. For one particular scene, where Shahid was required to run through snow, the actor had to take 8-10 retakes before the shot could be finalised. In fact, shooting in the cold conditions was so difficult that it took the film crew three days to picturise the whole scene!

Sonam's Fashion Lessons For Shahid

Sonam, who is known as a fashionista, gave Shahid Kapoor many fashion tips during the making of Mausam. She used to potter around Shahid's house and decide which clothes he would wear for interviews and press meets.

Birthday Gift Mausam

The script of Mausam was director Pankaj Kapur's gift to his actor-son, Shahid Kapoor. As a return gift on his father's birthday, Shahid gave the nod for his father's first Bollywood film as director.

Sonam's Sick Leave

Everyone knows that Mausam was in the making for almost two years. However, as opposed to the many rumours doing the rounds, the shooting of the movie took extra time due to lead actress Sonam Kapoor's illnesses! Yes, Sonam fell sick on more than one occasion during the shooting of Mausam. This, unfortunately, entailed the cancellation of shooting.

"Less Is More"

During the shooting of Mausam, Shahid learnt a valuable lesson from father-director Pankaj Kapur, "Less is more in acting". The veteran actor taught Shahid that he need not emote each and every expression on screen.

No Shooting For Shahid

Sasha couldn't shoot for the first two days on the sets of Mausam because of the rains in Scotland. As a result, he spent the first few days roaming around the sets in his pilot uniform and Ray-Bans. He finally got to shoot with his father and Sonam on the third day.

Deciding Shahid's Looks

While Sonam may have been the fashionista on the sets, Shahid Kapoor's look was completely Pankaj Kapur's idea. He decided that a side parting and glares would go with Shahid's officer-look.

Shahid Kapoor (Mausam Movie Stills)

No Flying

Everyone knows that Shahid Kapoor flew a fighter jet ' an F-16 ' for his role as a pilot in the film. But in real life, the Kaminey star isn't really fond of flying and avoids it as much as possible!

Silence Please!

While Sonam is quite a talkative person, Shahid is more on the quiet side. Before any important scene, Sonam would get nervous and talk non-stop. Shahid, on the other hand, preferred silence. Even though he tried to quieten  her down, Sonam continued to verbally diffuse her nervousness.

Eros International eyes 30% growth this year on new films

Q: The film Mausam got ripped apart by most of the critics, has it done you a lot of good?

A: This film is by far the biggest opening for Shahid. It's a complete family entertainer and he gave a very good performance considering it was solo hero film. For the last weekend, we did a business of about Rs 41 crore gross worldwide and we released this movie on more than 2,000 centers across the world.

Moreover, it was a very economically budgeted film. It's already a profitable venture for us because of our de-risking approach as we already had pre-licensed website and other monetisation revenues of the film. So, we covered most of the cost before the movie got released. I think we will be seeing more numbers around it.

I'm fine as long as the movie does well Smile And seeing these reports, it's obvious that the critics haven't been able to influence a lot of people.
And I kind of want to go for a second time LOL can't wait til it comes on dvd !
