Okay my tamil is not great but here goes:
Vinnaithandi varuvaya means "will you cross the skies and come to me?", and thats kind of the theme of the song as well as the film. It's also a reference to a really famous line in ANOTHER a.r.rahman song from 1994 in the movie "kadhalan" which you can find here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkkrkXzKCDo
Ohrey uyire, (oh my life)
Unnakagha
thudithaen, vinmeeney.. (for you i have suffered, my star)
Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaa.. (will you cross the skies and come?)
Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaaahh.. (will you cross the skies and come?)
Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaa.. (will you cross the skies and come?)
Vinmeeney

Neytrum iravil, (yesterday
in the night)
Unnodu iruthaen, (I was
with you)
Athai neeyum, (and you)
Maranthaaya

saying that you forgot the time we spent together)
Kanavodu

Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaa.. (will you cross the skies and come?)
Nilavae nee
varuvaayah.. (Oh you, the moon, will you come?)
Ohrey uyire (this is a repeat verse)
Unnakagha
thudithaen, vinmeeney..
Vinnaithaandi

Ooohhh..ooohhh

Pirinthadhu

Iruthuruvam
sern-antha orr-idam, (okay these two sentences are hard to translate, but their roughly speaking about the thought of separating, and what would happen if they did)
Anggatheythaan naam
sernthomey..(it was in that place that we came together)
Inimezh naanum
neeyum pirivathillai..anbeyy.. (from now on neither you or I will separate,
my love)
Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaa.. (will you cross the skies and come?)
Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaa..
Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaayaa..
Vinmeeney
varuvaayahhh (my star, will you come?)
YUP! there you go. its a very breezy and surreal song and its overall meaning and sound both imply that its sort of just a boy thinking about his lover in a very dreamy way. It is neither tragic or happy, but he is reminiscing about the idea of their romance itself, almost like its fading or potentially may end. Thus it sounds slightly melancholic.
Its awesome, its a great song liverach, the vinaythaandi soundtrack is generally pretty good.
