the point of debates - Page 2

Debate is not a discussion but an argument. In most debates (esp in schools) one is asked to take a certain stand and argue their way out. There is no choice even if one has some other views.
Debate skills have great value in politics, policies and legal cases. It is an art of persuasion too and acting skills would be an added advantage. At times politicians offer other incentives to win votes.πŸ˜†

Here on DM we very often have a discussion rather an argument unless personal egos get in the way.

Theres no such restriction here.

Well as far as this forum is concerned I think its more of a pass time when we have enough time at our disposal.

What about virtual acting skills?

Are you too suggesting that it operates here on DM? Take a clear stand on this one now! πŸ˜†

The mind knows before hand that it is losing ground, so tries to clutch a straw.

There is no right and wrong except in Math and Science...everything else is just our perception...if it matches our perception its right..if not..its wrong...

On the contrary Vinu, you should feel proud that you have the ability to realise that and had the opportunity of appreciating a different point of view. πŸ˜†

Math and science have their paradoxes because we have not been able to figure it out...but there can be only one correct answer..

If you dont dispense with your chivalrous nature you will never be able to argue summer πŸ˜†
You could remind yourself that the members (ladies included)  have willing participated in a topic for debate so you are well within your rights if you argue back. Arguing does not mean bad mouthing. There is no need to resort any to name calling.

These are the topics most amenable to a healthy and long debate!
