Shakespeare and Water colors.

#6 A  A Glimpse.

Ram

Life is so erratic. Whilst we whisker away with the breeze of hard work, some moments root us firmly to our ground, with soul stirring experiences and cherished memories. His jaw dropped when Vikram hazily announced that Priya would be coming down for dinner. At HIS place. His family had gone for some elegant wine tasting function, he found himself in solitude. He liked being left alone but then again, he called Vikram for dinner. He realized later that Vikram would tag Neha along and he cursed that very moment when he changed his mind about having company for a change. And there they were. At his home, both of his friends making Priya comfortable while he withered away in inquietude. His servants were asked to leave early and having nothing to do really, she asked if she could cook. Great, being herbivorous time! He wondered if he could live with a complete vegetarian all his life. Her oh-I-would-die-if-I-touch-meat attitude amused him more than he was irked. He was completely caught off guard when Neha asked them to play ludo. Blinking his eyes four-five times repeatedly, he realized what she meant. She wanted them to play LUDO. Ludo, a kid's game. He hadn't played that silly game since he was twelve and quit playing when his step brother had forgone this game for the new play station and had blown away the entire set with his mere hand when asked to play. Priya, on the other hand, he realized had a sudden wicked gleam in her eyes and they sparkled in a way that made him sick in the stomach. Challenge accepted. He would win against Priya and then, unleash his power over her which she was always challenging, in one way or the other. He was strong, wasn't he? Was he?

Literature graduates like her are "literally" deep rooted with sarcasms and their usual colloquialisms include mockery, parody and double meaning quotes. Structurally, the game had he and Neha paired against her and Vikram. It was then in an inopportune moment that he thought of a very cheesy and a Bollywood styled dialogue that he decided to quote.

He said- "Jo haar kar bhi jeete use Baazigar kehte hain"

She very swiftly retorted, "Aur jo har baar jeete usse Priya Sharma kehte hain." Vikram started applauding and Neha blew a whistle. He couldn't think of a response, heck, he couldn't even think of an appropriate facial expression. He wasn't sure whether to be amused, to laugh, to be annoyed or accept verbal defeat. It was in that moment that he unequivocally realized that he was NEVER going to win against her repartee. He retreated back and chose to keep his mouth shut for the rest of the game. Sure enough, today was a bad day. Neha and he were left with one pawn in their house color to win. They needed just the number ONE to win and Priya, on the other hand, completed the whole lap and won double-taking two of her pawns with the number six. One more barrier down. One more war lost. Neha plummeted in despair and he made an ugly face. Vikram did the victory dance and Priya, chirpy as always, high-fived her partner.

(An hour later)

He never quite understood Neha's mental condition. One moment, she was upset about her defeat, unwillingly served him his dinner, slamming down his plate on the table, in front of him, the other moment, She was dragging her husband and him both, ordering them to show Priya her future 'room'. He was horrified at the thought of it. He made every excuse in the book to prevent the situation, but in vain. He never had the chance to stop them or even compliment Priya for her culinary abilities. She had prepared his favorite vegetarian food, cold pasta tossed with pineapple, broccoli and mushroom as salad and of course, Punjabi dal makhani and shahi paneer with homemade soft butter naan. Had he been a cat, he would be purring right now, so satisfied with his meal was he. Partly, as a reward, he let her enter his "Chambers". It was for her to decide how she liked it. Not that he was going to change the place so much as change the position of a pen for her, of course. But he wanted to know what she felt about his taste and take about his life. He was about to find it soon, that is, if neha didn't ask her to show everything by herself, with her biased opinion about everything. Was she the same? Biased? Would she reject his lifestyle or accept it as her own, If only he knew.

To be continued.
