Mission 37: You Are The Best Thing That's Ever Been Mine
Heer looked at the bandage around her finger and softly smiled. Prem had asked the nurse at the nurses' station for some ointment and a band-aid. The nurse got the supplies and was going to clean it for her when Prem politely intervened stating he would take care of it. She thought it was rather cute the way he put his full concentration in on bandaging her finger. She had watched him carefully clean her skin with an alcoholic swab, dab some ointment onto the tiny wound, and then wrap the band-aid around the joint of her finger. She glanced to her left and took in his gorgeous profile. She was at first opposed to him escorting her out of the hospital because she was concern for his ankle. She wanted him to take proper rest but he refused to listen to her. Now as they walked alone down the long veranda guided by the softly lit lamps and the moon light from the night sky, she was glad he had been so insistent. The same peacefulness they had felt during their stroll around the courtyard was present again. There was an air of hopefulness making each step they took light and carefree.
Prem could sense Heer's hand was just inches away from his hand as they walked in the serene silence. He looked straight ahead appearing to be concentrating on walking forward when he was really having a war with himself debating whether or not he should attempt to hold her hand. He didn't know how she would react to this action. Would it be considered too forward on his part because of the current nature of their relationship? He knew she was use to being intimate with her Prem and he was not her Prem. He looked like him but he didn't act like him or at least the way she was use to having him act. It was getting to be a bit confusing and hard for Prem to know what boundaries he could cross or couldn't cross. In all legal sense they were married but emotionally there was a severed connection because he had amnesia. He couldn't remember anything. After a few minutes of weighing the pros and cons he decided he had to try. Only then he would know where he stood with her. Prem took a deep breath and gently swung his hand around and slowly clasped her hand. He felt a cold sweat break out on his back as his heart thumped loudly in his ears. He held his breath and simply waited for her response.
Heer was at first taken aback at feeling Prem's large but soft hand surrounding her hand. She could feel his grip was firm but loose giving her the option to either accept or deny his request. They had stopped walking waiting to see what would be the outcome. Heer felt her cheeks flush and she shyly looked down and away afraid to look at him. She had wondered what she would do in this type of situation. She thought she wouldn't have any issues if something of this nature occurred but she was finding the situation of Prem's amnesia to be more difficult than she thought it would be. Heer was having trouble figuring out if he was doing certain things because he felt obligated to do them because she had told him she was his wife or did he really want to do it because he was starting to feel something for her. She felt him begin to retract his hand thinking that she didn't want to hold hands with him when that was further from the truth. She maneuvered her fingers and let them slip through the spaces between his fingers clasping her hand tightly into his.
Prem smiled that she had accepted his gesture and they began walking again. Though neither one of them glanced to their side to sneak a peek at their partner they both somehow knew that the other was smiling. Soon the hospital parking lot came into view. The night guard Vinod Kumar stood outside the small security hut taking in some fresh night air as he munched on a bag of pistachios. He smiled and waved at the couple as they approached. "Thank you for the bag of pistachios Heer. They are delicious like you said. Tell that boy Preet if he loses a bet with me he should be man enough to accept defeat and bring me the wagered prize. I know you bought those ladoos for me. You forgot to take the receipt out of the bag. That boy should be ashamed of himself making you pay for something he lost." He then looked at Prem, "You wouldn't do that to her would you?"
"No sir," Prem replied shaking his head.
Vinod smiled, "Tonight's such a beautiful night...the moon is so bright and round," turning his head upward staring at the sky, "there is a nice breeze blowing...the perfect night to hold hands and go for a romantic stroll for two."
Prem and Heer both turned towards each other and looked down to see they were still holding hands. They glanced back up and blushed as their hands parted ways. Vinod just softly chuckled at their reaction. "Um, Uncle this is Prem," Heer nervously introduced.
"Ah, so this is your husband, Mr. Deshmukh?" Vinod inquired.
"Hello," Prem politely answered.
"You heal quickly now so you can take your wife on a proper Honeymoon," Vinod ordered. "I suggest taking her to Rajasthan...beautiful place...the history...the palaces...the forts...you'll love it trust me."
"You've been?" Heer asked.
"Recently during for vacation...took my wife and kids," Vinod replied.
"I guess we should put that on our list of places to visit," Prem said looking at Heer. Her eyes widen at his words and the only thing she could do was simply give a half grin. She wasn't sure if he was being serious or he was only saying this because Vinod was in front of them.
"It's getting late. I think you should walk her to her car. Don't want her driving back to the hotel so late at night," Vinod said glancing at Prem.
"Right," Prem nodded taking his suggestion like an obedient son.
"Goodnight Vinod Uncle," Heer waved as they began walking away.
"Goodnight. Drive safely," he replied back.
Prem walked Heer to her car and waited anxiously as she fished her keys out of her purse. Heer opened the car door and then turned around to say her farewell. But before she could say anything he spoke first, "So...um, thanks for coming to dinner. I hope the food was okay...I know it was hospital food so I'm sure it could have been better...but it's pretty decent for being hospital food...which is why I asked you to come...if I could I would have cooked something for you...well, I can't cook...or at least I don't think so...I never tried...I mean I haven't tried...did I use to cook for you? Wait, you don't have to answer that question. Maybe I can do that for us next time or maybe we could order food from outside..."
Heer couldn't help but smile at the way Prem was rambling. It reminded her of the time he had dropped her off at her hotel door after their first official date. He had been so nervous than and it was obvious he was just as nervous now. "So, I hope you had a good time...I know hanging around the hospital isn't really all that exciting...maybe when I get a bit better I can convince Dr. Sharma to let me go out for the day or something? I don't know what's around here but I'm sure we could find something to do...like go to a market or maybe watch a film..."
"I'd like that," Heer simply said making him stop talking.
"You would?" Prem asked his voice full of wonder.
"I had a really good time," Heer replied and gently lifted herself up on her tiptoes. Prem's eyes widen as he felt her soft lips on his cheek. His knees nearly gave way and he would have fallen had it not been for the crutch underneath his arm supporting his weight. Prem swallowed hard as Heer pulled away to face him. He could smell a sweet scent of Jasmine playing in the air around him making him intoxicated with happiness. He didn't know if it was her shampoo, her soap, her lotion, or the perfume she was wearing that was leaving this lingering Jasmine aroma in his vicinity but he liked it.
"I had a good time too," Prem whispered in his stunned trace.
"Goodnight," Heer replied with a smile as she gently tapped his chest with her hand. "Get some rest."
Before Prem could respond to her words Heer turned around and got into the car. He passively watched as the headlights turned on and the vehicle purred to a start. The only thing he could do was to raise his hand up and wave goodbye. When the car had reached the edge of the parking lot entrance he put his hand to his cheek and beamed a smile. He was giddy with delight that she had kissed him on the cheek. His eyebrows then knitted wondering if she had felt his frantic heartbeat. Could she tell what kind of effect she had on him? As he made his way back into the hospital to his room, his mind replayed their romantic stroll through the courtyard and the moment when they were staring into each other's eyes. Her perfectly shaped almond eyes that always seem to draw him in; he could see so much of her through her eyes. He knew right there and then how much he really liked her. He couldn't deny the feeling when he was around her. The two weeks they had spent together was enough for him to figure out the kind of person she was and why he had probably liked her; loved her in the first place.
Prem entered his room and grabbed the iPod that Preet had left for him and made himself comfortable in his tiny bed. He put the ear buds in and scrolled through one of Preet's playlist searching for a song. It was one that would perfectly describe the way he was feeling at this very moment. He gently sang to himself, "Tere mast mast do nain mere dil ka le gaye chain. Mere dil ka le gaye chain tere mast mast do nain. [Your pretty eyes have stolen the serenity of my heart. My heart's serenity has been stolen by your pretty eyes.]" He tucked his hands underneath his head and smiled as he continued listening to the song.
Preet smirked to himself as he walked to the car. Today they were going to a nearby village to visit the bazaar. Doctor Sharma had consented to allow Prem to leave the hospital for the day. The only restrictions were that Prem was not allowed to do anything strenuous since this was his first day off his crutches and he was to return to the hospital by ten. Preet quickly opened the door to the back of the car and tossed his backpack and other things into the passenger seat. He then stood by the door like a chauffeur. Heer looked questioningly at him while he simply smiled, "Get in."
"But someone can sit in the front," Prem replied.
"Nope, there's stuff there. You two sit in the back," Preet ordered. Prem and Heer displayed confused looks but quietly sat in the back seat. "Everyone buckled up?" Preet asked as he started the car.
"Yes," Prem and Heer mumbled.
"Let's listen to something on the ride over," Preet said and slipped in an mp3 CD into the CD player. His eyes shifted upwards to the rearview mirror briefly gauging Prem and Heer's reaction as a soft melody began to fill the car cabin. He tried not to snicker at the way their eyes flexed in shy nervousness as a romantic Hindi song started to play. Prem rubbed the back of his neck and turned his head towards the window pretending that something extremely interesting was outside. Heer also turned her attention to her window and stared hard at the passing scenery. Preet grinned and quickly moved the steering wheel to the left and then back to the right like he was trying to avoid something in the road. "Sorry! So sorry," he yelled as the car swerved back and forth.
There wasn't enough time for Heer to brace herself as she went flying to her right and knocked into Prem. She landed on her side on top of his broad chest. "You okay?" She lifted her head up to see his piercing brown eyes staring back at her. She felt her cheeks grow warm and she whispered a soft, "Sorry."
Just as Prem's arms were about to wrap around her in a protective hold there was another sudden jerk moving them to the other side of the vehicle. Prem was nearly on top of Heer this time and his cheeks were blushing a light pink. "Sorry..."
"It's okay," Heer uttered as they untangled themselves. They glanced at each other rather timidly and then quickly fastened their seat belts trying to avoid the embarrassment they felt. Heer sneaked a peak to her right and saw that Prem was busy looking out his window again. She turned back to her window and gently touched her cheeks feeling how warm they had gotten. While she was doing that Prem had cautiously turned to look at her wondering what she was doing and thinking. He turned back to his window when he sensed she was about to turn towards his direction again. He didn't mind the contact they had shared but with Preet in the same vehicle he was feeling a bit shy. He decided he would just continue to stare out the window as it was the only safe option for him.
Preet just smiled at their reactions. He knew something was brewing between them and he was going to do all that he could to bring them together so they could openly admit their feelings. He had seen them getting closer and he was hopeful that Prem would eventually remember who Heer was and the relationship they shared. He had arranged today's trip for the specific purpose of getting Prem out of the hospital and allowing him the opportunity to bond with Heer in a normal date like setting. Preet shifted his eyes back to the road and continued driving with a wily smirk on his face.
About an hour later they arrived at the festive town market, they strolled down the alleyway taking in the sights and sounds of the hustle and bustle. Preet walked a few paces ahead hoping to give Prem and Heer some privacy. He glanced back and frowned at seeing Prem walking with his head turned here and there paying more attention to the hawkers and stands then Heer. He sighed shaking his head wondering what he was going to do with him. Preet looked about him and spied a man carrying a large vessel of red dye powder. He was heading towards the dye stand to deliver the powder. Preet smirked and knew what he had to do.
Prem knew he should be paying more attention to Heer but he was a bit lost at what he should do. Even though they had gotten closer since the dinner date there seemed to be something blocking them from taking the next step forward. He was concern about her having to deal with his memory loss. He had seen the doubt and sadness in her eyes when they talked sometimes. He knew she was having a hard time and he wanted nothing more to stop her pain. Deep in his thoughts he almost didn't see what was happening around him until he heard someone shout, "Watch out!" Prem's eyes immediately focused in on his surroundings and saw a guy carrying a large basket of dye powder up above his head. He was heading into a collision course with Heer who was too preoccupied with looking at what the stands were selling that she didn't realize what was coming her way. Prem quickly ran towards her and grabbed her arm. Heer was caught off guard and tripped over her own two feet as she walked forward towards the man who was carrying the dye. Prem got pulled into the gravity of the situation as Heer fumbled in a round; her body twisting back towards him. Heer eyes were wide as she sensed she was about to fall and take Prem down with her.
However, Prem was able to steady himself and wrapped his left arm around Heer's waist to keep her from falling down. His right hand shot up and covered her head and face just as the man with the dye let go of his basket. Red dye powder flew everywhere covering everything around the surrounding area. Prem opened his eyes and saw that he had little red mounds of powder resting on his hand and arm. He moved his hand upward revealing Heer's clean face. Heer slowly opened her eyes to see Prem's hair coated with red powder. The right side of his face was dusted into a light shade of red. Prem continued moving his hand back and watched with wonder as a line of red dye powder gently trickled down and filled the part in Heer's hair like sindoor. His eyes then glanced down and saw Heer staring at him like she had understood what had happened.(*Click here to listen to the song Tere Mast Mast Doh Nain from the movie Dabangg it will really help enhance the scene even more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT22tZPzWDk&feature=fvw)
Preet yawned as he lifted his arms up and stretched out his back. "Oh boy, am I tired. This has been a long day." He tossed the car keys to Heer and walked over to the security hut in the hospital parking lot. "So you're getting off in the next few minutes aren't you? You think you can take me home?"
Vinod Kumar stared at Preet with an annoyed look. "And why should I take you home?"
"Preet, we're only going to be a few minutes. I'm just dropping off some of Prem's bags. I'll drive us back to the hotel," Heer explained.
"Take your time saying goodbye," Preet replied with a wily smile as he shooed them away with his hand. "Vinod Uncle will take me home," putting his arm around his shoulder.
"Are you my son?" Vinod inquired.
Preet smiled and put his finger up in the air indicating he had something to show him. He took two boxes of ladoos out of the bag he was carrying and said, "Something for you Bauji."
Vinod's eyes went bright and he licked his lips salivating at the sweet and sticky treats. He rubbed his hands together, "Ah Beta you made your Bauji proud."
"So I can get a ride right?" Preet asked as he moved the box from side to side preventing Vinod from taking it before he got his answer.
"Yes," Vinod agreed and then snatched the boxes away from him. He opened the top one and hungrily devoured one of them with a smile etched on his face. "Mmm...ahhh...that was delicious," mumbling, "she never lets me eat these at home...hehe...she won't know a thing...as long as there isn't any evidence."
"Are you hiding ladoos from your wife?" Heer questioned. "What happened to the box I bought you a few days ago? Don't tell me you finished it all."
"I had to when they are freshly made like that you can't allow them to go to waste," Vinod replied as he ate another one.
Prem, Preet, and Heer exchanged worried and amused glances with each other at the way Vinod Uncle was downing the ladoos. "I don't see how Mrs. Kumar isn't going to notice," Prem said motioning with his hands the expansion of Vinod Uncle's waist. Heer softly giggled making Vinod Uncle look up and stare at them.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing," Preet replied offering a handkerchief, "Here you go, you have a little on the side of your mouth. Ignore the lovebirds over there and let's enjoy the ladoos."
"You enjoy your ladoos...all of them," Preet said correcting his sentence.
Prem and Heer both sighed and walked into the hospital. When they entered Prem's room Heer help him find a place to place his bags. "Thanks for buying me some clothes," Prem said. He was suddenly feeling nervous again even though they had a good time hanging out.
"You're welcome," Heer timidly replied. "I'd thought you would enjoy wearing something else other than the white kurtas the hospital gives you."
"You like me in modern clothing or Indian?" Prem asked.
"Either one is fine...you look great in both," Heer answered.
"You looked really beautiful today," Prem said walking closer to her. Heer felt her cheeks go warm as she gazed into his soulful brown eyes. "When my hand moved over your head and the sindoor fell into place...I felt really happy...I felt proud. I know it hasn't been easy. I don't like seeing you in pain. I don't want to be the cause of it...as a husband I shouldn't be the one causing you the pain...I should be protecting you from it. I'm sorry Heer."
"No Prem, don't say that," Heer said shaking her head. "I'm happy you are alive. I'm happy."
"How can you be happy? I can't remember anything," Prem replied. "I can't remember my parents, I can't remember my birthday, I can't remember where I lived, I can't remember what school I went to, I can't remember a lot of things...the most important memories of us...how we fell in love...our first date, our first kiss, how I proposed to you, our marriage ceremony, our first time together...how can you be happy? How can you be happy Heer?"
"Prem," Heer hushed as she cupped his face with her hands. "I'm happy we have this moment together...that you are standing right here in front of me. The not knowing...the days of thinking you wouldn't come back to me...those were the toughest times...this is nothing compare to that. I have you now and you're healthy and that is all that matters to me."
"I'm trying. I'm trying really hard..."
"I know Prem...I know you are," Heer replied. She could see the turmoil in his eyes and she wanted nothing more than to ease his mind. "It's okay. This is going to take time. The doctor told you not to stress yourself...not to put so much pressure on yourself to remember."
"What if I never remember?" Prem hesitantly asked.
Heer was caught off guard by the question as her eyes gently widened briefly stunned not knowing what to say. She saw Prem's eyes grow watery at the thought of the possibility that things would never return to normal for them. Heer opened her mouth and simply said, "Then we can make new memories together."
Prem gazed at her lovingly and tenderly caressed her cheek with his right hand. The pad of his thumb gently brushed along her silky skin in a fluid rhythmic motion. I can see why I fell in love with you in the first place. You're the best thing that's ever been mine." Heer's eyes softened at his words and she felt herself melting in his presence. Prem continued to gaze into her hazel eyes and cautiously asked, "May I kiss you?" Heer was surprised at his request at first but then closed her eyes giving him permission. Prem nervously leaned in and soon felt the delicate touch of Heer's soft lips against his. When they naturally broke apart he was in awe. It was the sweetest kiss he had ever experienced. He stared down at her pink lips wanting nothing more than another kiss. His eyes shifted upward to read Heer's eyes and he saw the same desire he was feeling inside. Without a word they both leaned inward for another kiss. This time it was much stronger. Prem could feel tingling sensations spread from the top his head down to the tips of his toes. His knees went weak when he felt Heer slipped her hand into the back of his hair resting her palm at the nape of his neck. He was in utter bliss and he didn't want the feeling to end. This time when the kiss ended Prem grinned and leaned his forehead against Heer's forehead making her softly smile as well.
"I should go. It's getting late," Heer said after a few minutes of loving giggles and tenderly rubbing their foreheads together.
"Stay," Prem replied when he felt her pulling away.
"Prem..." Heer uttered in cautious surprise.
"You take the bed and I'll take the chair," Prem explained. "Just stay."
"I can't do that. You're the patient you're still recovering. You need the bed," Heer said. "Goodnight." She turned to leave and walked only a few steps when she felt a tug. She glanced back and saw that Prem was holding onto her dupatta. She watched as he slowly gathered the fabric into his hands while he walked towards her. His face wore a sad pleading expression softening Heer's decision to go. "I'll stay until you fall asleep." Prem replied with a pondering look to her offer. "Visiting hours are over...the night nurse won't be happy seeing me here. I'll stay until you fall asleep. It's either that or I'll just go back to the hotel."
"Okay," Prem agreed. He quickly moved the chair over to his bed and then said, "I'm going to freshen up. I'll be back. You won't leave, right?"
"I'll be here," Heer replied with a gentle giggle.
"All right," Prem grinned and rushed into the bathroom to brush his teeth and get cleaned up a bit before bed. Heer sat down in the chair and waited. A few minutes later Prem came out and slipped underneath the covers. He reached out and took her hand into his and clasped it firmly before he laid down. "So, are you going to tell me a story?"
"Story? Hmmm...Snow White or Cinderella?" Heer teased.
"No, I want Sleeping Beauty," Prem joked back making her laugh. He just grinned and stared at her face.
"Prem, close your eyes and go to sleep," Heer suggested when he saw him give a big yawn. He just shook his head in reply and continued gazing at her. Heer could feel herself blushing and shifted her eyes away from his eyes. Prem placed a tender kiss on her hand and rested it on his chest. He was smiling goofily pleased with the outcome of the day's events. Eventually, his eyelids slowly closed and he fell into a peaceful slumber.
Prem softly awoke in the middle of the night and sighed that he had fallen asleep so soon. Heer had left him and was sleeping soundly in her hotel room. He turned his head to the side and saw to his surprise Heer hunched over with her head resting on the side of the bed sleeping. He felt a gentle weight on his left hand and realized they were still holding hands. Prem smiled at that fact but then became worried at the position Heer was sleeping in. Her back had to be hurting her. He sat up and rubbed her back trying to tenderly wake her. "Heer?" Prem watched as she stirred and lifted her head to take in her surroundings. "Your back hurts doesn't it?" Prem asked. He had noticed the way her she winced when she began to sit up.
"No, I'm fine," Heer replied but then winched again.
"Come here," Prem ordered as he pulled her towards him.
"Wait, what are you doing?"
"The night nurse obviously doesn't care...she didn't wake you to tell you to go home. So come here," Prem repeated. He took her scarf off and folded it nicely placing it on the night stand. He then slipped his hands around her waist and pulled her down towards him.
"Prem..." Heer gasped.
"Get in bed with me," Prem explained.
"There isn't enough room," Heer protested.
"Yes, there is. You can sleep on my chest," Prem replied.
"But your ribs...you shouldn't put any weight on them...they haven't healed all the way. I'm too heavy."
"You're not heavy. Stop arguing with me. I want to cuddle with my wife," Prem argued back. Heer was lifted into the bed in a haphazard way making it very uncomfortable for both of them. "I need to close the railing so you don't fall off," Prem explained as he struggled to move about the bed.
"Prem, wait," Heer said as she placed her hands on his chest.
"Heer, I told you I'll be fine."
"Let me get situated first and I'll pull the railing up," Heer suggested. Prem lay still as Heer got into a better position and closed the railing. She then turned around so they could adjust their positions and cuddle properly.
Prem grinned as he held her close and sighed, "I like this...I like this a lot. Did I do this a lot...hold you while I slept?"
"Yes," Heer replied looking up at him. She closed her eyes when she sensed Prem was closing the distance between them for a kiss. Just as Prem was deepening the kiss they heard footsteps in the hallway and the sound of doors softly opening and closing.
"The night nurse," they both said at the same time in panic.
"Move behind me," Prem whispered. "I'll sleep facing forward and you just hide behind my back." Heer quickly scrambled to the other side of the bed. Prem let out a groan as her knee hit him in a sensitive position.
"Oh My God Prem are you okay?" Heer replied with concern and remorse.
"Fineee...c-c-couldn't bbe bet-ter..." Prem hoarsely said.
"I'm so sorry. Where did I hit you? Was it your ribs?" Heer asked as her hands began to roam.
"It's okay...it's okay..." Prem protested. He gripped her hands so she'd stop moving about. "Just stay still. I think we'll still be able to have children."
Heer's face turned red and she mumbled an, "Oh..." She hid her face into his back and apologized, "I'm sorry."
"I'll be okay. Don't worry," Prem said.
They heard the footsteps coming closer and they both stopped talking. Prem could feel Heer tightening her grip around his waist in an attempt to mold into him and make herself smaller. He closed his eyes pretending to sleep so the night nurse wouldn't suspect a thing. He could hear the door opening and the rustling sound of fabric as the nurse walked in doing a brief check on things. He then heard her footsteps leave and the door closing shut. Prem gently whispered, "She's gone."
Heer relaxed and felt Prem moving away. "Wait, I don't think this is such a good idea," Heer warned as Prem started to pull her back towards his chest.
"I told you I'm fine. Just keep your knee down," Prem replied. He got into a comfortable position and smiled. "You comfortable?"
"Yes," Heer said murmuring into his chest.
"Good," Prem grinned giving her a loving kiss on her head. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Heer yawned. She sleepily closed her eyes and snuggled into his chest letting all her worries fade away. She was lulled into sleep by the steady beating of his heart. Prem smiled at her sleeping form and held her close. He soon drifted off into sleep dreaming of their future together.
