Chapter Thirty One

It's Only Words

Dutta did not want anything to do with his father, but Ayi Sahib's constant requests were beginning to irritate him to an extent, so what if his father was dead.  Jagtap Dada had been more a father in just a few hours than what Damodar Patil had ever been, thought Dutta. So what if he was his son, so what if they shared the same blood, that didn't mean anything, 'cause today here was standing there listening to the words coming out of Ayi Sahib's mouth with not a single bit of remorse running through Dutta hearing the words that Damodar Patil was no longer alive, and how he'd been suffering from lung cancer, due to excessive smoking  He hadn't ever try to meet Dutta, but as his last days had inched closer, he'd tried to use his last wish and hoped that Dutta would come to meet the old man, but by the time Ayi Sahib had told Dutta this news.  Damodar Patil had already passed on; a couple of hours later, after Kalavathi had went to meet him.
When Dutta had heard of his Father's death, he felt no loss but only regret of the fact that this man was his Father.   Damodar's men had delivered the message to Dutta the next morning, and informed him that his dying wish was to meet Dutta, and he alone was remembered in his Father's last words, and had wished that as his only son Dutta would perform his final rites, and that he would consider his sins to be forgiven by his son, for it was not God's forgiveness he sought.  He also left a letter addressed to Ayi Sahib with his deeds, and various possessions.
The messenger that had come with the news, had also told Dutta that they were loyal workers for their boss, and his last orders to them were that their new boss was Dutta Shriram Patil, their costs were covered already, and given precise instructions to wait until Dutta was ready to accept them under his wing, we are more experienced in this field.  And would never shake the foundation of our loyalty to our master... he said as he bowed his head down in respect and left.

Naku hadn't seemed to be on Earth lately thought Gaurav, as much as he didn't want to pop her bubble, he had to break it to her that she needed to land back on her feet and start her rehearsals for the competition which was definitely going to be tough, but seeing her lips curving upwards without reason he didn't want to be the reason to turn that smile upside down, so thought what the hell let her have a little longer.

Ayi Sahib was confused as to what to do with Damodar Patil's funeral, Dutta hadn't made anything clear about carrying out the rituals. When Dutta had come down, he didn't seem like he was ready for to perform the final rites, but he looked at Naku and than towards Ayi Sahib and announced that he will first collect Dada's body and do his final rites together with Damodar Patil's as this would make him feel that his duty towards his blood relation would be witnessed by several attending, but his true duty would be towards Jagtap Dada.

Baji and Dutta had left first to find Dada from the Jungle, and were reminded by Naku to collect Paaki's ashes too, as they're ashes were to be let loose into the river Ganges together. Kala was beginning to get irritated beyond reason watching Dutta and Naku's interaction since they'd returned from the jungle.

Things had gone smoothly but there weren't much interaction at the funeral between anyone.  Damodar's right hand man Lalchand had spoken to Ayi Sahib and wondered if she had mentioned anything about the youngest to Dutta, but Ayi Sahib replied by telling she will inform Dutta when the time was right.

Two funeral pyres were lit and word was around that the second man was no less a Father to Dutta than Damodar Patil. As Dutta walked around with the water pot on his shoulder, he wished that Dada could hear him, Dada you were the Father I needed in those few hours of need, than Damodar Patil ever was in a lifetime of trouble given by him. He tried not to let his emotions show, but of course Dutta was good at that. He than did the same for his real Father, eventually everyone had left, and than a few men had returned to collect the ashes and gather them in a earthen pot, ready to be released into the holy river, to finally end their journey on Earth.

Bhau yeh sab kya hai, jab se tum lote ho, tab se tera aur Nakusha ka ek dusre se bartaav kafi badal chuka hai...yeh sab kya hai...kal tak jis ladki ko tum ghar se nikal ne wale te, ab wohi ladki phir se wapas aagayi hai aur iss baar uska yahan se jaane ka koi naam hi nahin le raha... she questioned the second she got a chance, a day after the funeral, when things were quieter and she found Dutta alone.
Yeh aap kya keh rahi ho Tai, Nakusha meri Patni hai, uss waqt jo faisla maine liya tha maine josh main liya tha, lekin aaj main jo keh raha hoon woh sache mann se keh raha hoon Tai...aur behtar yehin hoga ke aap bhi Naku ko apni Vahini maan leejiye, he said calmly with his hands behind his back.
Oh I get it, that girl spent one night with you in the jungle and now you're suddenly head over heels with her, she planned all this Bhau, you know that but yet you're accepting her, how can you do this, she asked consistently, ...aur agar baat yahan tak agaye hai, to yeh matt bhoolna Bhau ke woh ladki abhi bhi sahi minay se teri Patni nahin hai... kya uske Maa, Baap ko yeh baat pata hai, aur agar pata hai to woh khush hai iss rishte se...agar yeh sab mumkin hai, to hi Nakusha tumhari Patni ban sakti hai na, she taunted.
Theek kahan tumne Tai, bilkul theek kahan, he said and left her alone, and walked away while taking his cell phone from his pocket and making a call.

After a long day, Dutta felt like resting, as he went to his room, Shastri Ji had decided to pay him a visit. Upon seeing Shastri Ji Dutta was surprised to see him there, but nevertheless out of respect stood up and offered him a place to sit.
Shastri Ji had been away for a couple of days, but had returned after hearing of Naku's and Dutta's encounter in the Jungle, and than his Fathers' sudden death.
Shastri Ji didn't really like to waste words or beat around the bush, and got straight down to what he had come for.
Beta, I just wanted to come here and say that that you have done well, by carrying out this task, you have proved to yourself and others that your mind is as noble as your heart, he said patting Dutta on the back lightly. But today I have come here to tell you that I now you do not respect or even love your real Father, but by performing his final rites you have freed his soul...
...but this is not what I wanted I hated my Father, even though he is dead I can't bring myself to remorse his death, said Dutta wondering if that just made him look like a selfish man, with selfish motives.
Dutta the truth is it is not easy to forgive the people that have wronged you in the past, and that doesn't make you wrong or selfish, but the fact of the matter is if you hold onto old memories, than you are the sole reason that becomes responsible for hurting yourself after that, said Shastri Ji, he let out a sigh, and tried to give Dutta a clear example of what he was trying to say, let me ask you a question Dutta, he went on, ...if someone gets pierced by a piece of sharp glass, what would you do, he asked.
Iska jawab tho bohat hi aasaan hai Shastri Ji, kaanch ke tukre ko nikal ke fenk dunga, taaki gaav jad se jad bhar jaye, answered Dutta.
Sahi kahan tumne beta, but what if the injured person won't let you remove the glass that's paining them, what do you think would happen, how would you assure that person that the glass has to be removed.
Baat bohut asaan hai, agar woh insaan kaanch ko nikaale ga nahin tho woh dard to hamesha taaza hota rahe ga, aur dard bhi waqt ke saath saath barta jayega, until the glass isn't discarded of the pain will not cease, said Dutta again, suddenly realising a similarity with himself, and looked back at Shastri Ji thinking if this was the reason he was asking such a question.
What you think is not wrong son, nodded Shastri Ji in calmly, as long as you are holding onto the past so firmly how can you possibly let your wounds heal, you are the reason for keeping your wounds fresh Dutta, yes your Father gave them to you, but rather than discarding the bad memories you let them get deeper and hurt you for the rest of your life, and the reason I'm telling you this is because before you go to set the ashes free in the river, you must set all the horrible memories with them, for you cannot have a clear future when you're past still clouds your tomorrows atmosphere, instead take what you need from the past and learn to make a better future with it, explained Shastri Ji.
But what lesson can be learnt from his doings, said Dutta trying to see sense in the Preacher's words, through clenched teeth, and refusing eye contact.
Shastri Ji just let out a subtle smile and replied, have you ever heard of a Muslim poet by the name of Kabir, he asked back.
Dutta smiled remembering Naku's words and her interest in the poet, of course she was taught by a noble man, and it showed, jee Naku ne ek baar bataya tha...
Jab tu aaya jagat mein, log hasse tu roya, aisi karni na kari, panche hasse sab koye, he recited the words, but before Dutta could ask, he began giving definition without delay, the translation for this goes as, ...when you are born in this world, everyone laughed while you cried, but do not do such doings in life that when you are gone they still laugh. What your Father did was wrong, but his doings in life have left you wondering if you are pleased with his death, so instead take this a lesson and remind yourself that every moment in your life and every decision has the power to make you future better, and when you are gone there will be people after you that will not face the dilemma you face today, he finished and got up to leave, today son take every lesson from your most hurtful memories and try to find the reason in them that god saw before he put that path before you, he added as he left.

Dutta had strangely felt at ease after the words Shastri Ji had uttered, and than suddenly as Dutta went down memory lane and saw all those horrid things take place in his life through the growing years, he could see another angle, like Naku had once said to him, if things are not clear than create a angle that shows the situation better to you, and you will soon see reason for everything, but it had taken him so long to do so.
Well one thing was clear his Father's words were that you're never going to make money by using your brains, so you better start thinking 'cause the only thing that's going to make you money in your life is your body, so you may as well start now. As Dutta thought back to these words he realised how right his Father was, here he was today making money by beating the crap out of people and scaring them to death, today his whole existence was based on his fear alone, since the time Naku had entered his life, that was the day he'd been questioning why his life was such, but just a couple of days ago he'd accepted her love without question and realised that it didn't need reasoning.

Dutta had given Baji a job to go and collect Naku's mother from her basti first thing in the morning, Ayi Sahib had told Dutta to leave as soon as possible for the scattering of the ashes in the Ganges, it would take him at least two to three days to return, and he would take Kishore with him.
Before leaving Dutta had told Naku that when he returns he will tell the house members about his decision about their relationship.

Naku was suprised to see Babi the next morning, but she was nonetheless happy to see her, and Babi was of course elated to see her child after so many days, she hadn't a clue about what had happened when Gaurav left suddenly that day, but today Baji had blurted the truth to her making Babi break down in tears, although Baji tried to reassure her that things were actually better than they had been since a long time, his attempts to get her to stop crying were hopeless.

Naku and Babi had spent ages talking, and for the first time Babi couldn't complain, because this was the first time she had seen her daughter happy in ages.  But Babi feared her daughter's happiness would get an evil eye casted on it, as Morey was paying close attention to everything they were doing, and was scared that he'd found out where Naku was, 'cause the day Gaurav had come to their house in the basti, news spread like a house on fire that a young guy was paying them a visit, and apparently the milk man had heard their conversation about Naku taking part in the competition, and the way circumstances were no one could be trusted, although there weren't really any reason to worry about, Babi couldn't help feeling that they'd already been betrayed, what if word got around to Morey, and what if he stopped Naku from taking part in that competition, but Naku assured her that she was worrying too much.  But as if it were in Babi's nature to find problems all at once, and realised that Dutta hadn't a clue about Naku's colour, and how would he react when he finds out, he is after all a murderer Naku, she argued.  But Naku didn't seem to look that far, suddenly she realised that she'd overlooked a very big thing, and wondered what Saab's reaction would be to her beauty.

Naku time is inching closer, I hate to break it to you but we seriously need to start the training, 'cause this competition is going to a be a tough one, I mean it Naku, there's people in this competition that can dance better than they talk Naku, beleive me, I've seen them dance, said Gaurav, while Babi was fast asleep.
Naku had slept with Babi in her old room, and Gaurav had slept on the floor, but Gaurav and Naku had stayed up and talked all night, with Gaurav doing most of the talking and Naku listening, he tried to make her see that she was beginning to live a dream, and dreams almost always had to be broken, to make one see reality.

When Dutta had returned their was only one thing on his mind, and as he looked at the magalsutra wrapped around his wrist Jagtap Dada's style, he knew what he had to do.
A couple of hours after arriving and cleaning himself up, he had made an announcement and asked everyone to be present downstairs, as per his requests.  After everything that he had encountered over the past few days Dutta had learnt a lot, where his attention was needed and what he needed to do to make things right.
When everyone was present, much to their confusion including Babi, Naku and Kalavathi, everyone had waited for Dutta to speak.

During the silence which no one dared to break, Dutta had inched forwards towards Naku's direction, making Naku nervous, and dropping her gaze and forcing herself to look here and there, whilst playing with her dupattaa.

Naku, started Dutta finally, walking closer and finally cupping her hands between his own, and began, ...main jaanta hoon Naku ke main yeh shayad galat kar raha hoon, kyunki mujhse yeh sab karna nahin aata, aur apni zindagi main pehli baar aisa kar raha hoon, par Naku, jo galti mujhse anjaane mein hui, usse main andekha nahin kar sakta lekin mein itna jaanta hoon ke uss galti ko leke main sudaar tho sakta hoon, uss din maine tujhse yeh tho pooch liya ke tu mere se pyar karti hai, lekin yeh jaane ki koshish nahin ki ke tujh jaisi sache mann ki ladki agar mujhse pyar karti hai, to kyun karti hai, he said raising his eyeborws in question, but no where near finished.  Maine tujhe ek aisi sazaa dedi jis keliye main sochta tha ke main khud ko kabhi maaf nahin kar paata, lekin aaj main agar uss baare mein sochta hoon, to agar uss din main tere se shaadi nahin banata to aaj mujhe tera pyar poori tarah se naseeb kabhi nahi hota.  Tu kehti thi na Naku ke jo bhi hota hai ache keliye hota hai, pehle mujhe inn luvso mein koi sachai nazar nahin aati thi, lekin aaj mein jahan bhi dekhta hoon, aur jidar bhi dekhta hoon, to mujhe sirf ek wajah nazar aati hai, ke meri zindagi ka sirf ek maqsat tha aur woh tha tujhse milna Naku, aur meri zindagi mein aaj tak jo kuch bhi hua mujhe un sab se aaj koi shiqayat nahin, kyunki woh har ek pal mujhe sirf tujhse aur kareeb laa raha tha, jin sab pallo ko maine yaad kar kar pachtata tha, aaj unhi pallo ka main shukar guzaar hoon Naku, ke aaj mere saamne tu khadi hai.

Naku main jaanta hoon ke maine tujhe tere haq ki khushi kabhi nahin di, lekin aaj main dena chahata hoon...dil se, aur aaj isi liye main Dutta Shriram Patil tujhse poochta hoon ke Naku kya tu mere se shaadi karegi, kya meri zindagi mein roshni bar degi, poori zindagi keliye.

Saab...finally Naku managed to say with a few tears esaping without permission, but before she could go on Dutta had closed his eyes and opened them again, and told Naku to let him finish first, please Naku don't speak, and just hear me out, he said, and carried on...
Naku main yeh to nahin jaanta ke hun dono ek dusre ke liye sahi hai ke nahin, lekin main itna zaroor keh sakta hoon ke hum dono is poori duniya main kisi aur keliye bhi nahin bane, ...jab bhi main sochta tha ke budapan jab aayega tab ek ajeeb sa darr lagta tha, lekin aaj jab main itni door ki sochta hoon, tho main apne budapan main bhi sirf tujhko dekhna chahta hoon Naku, jab tere daandh hilne lage, aur teri chaal todhi si thedi hojayegi... aur jab aapko door tak dekhne keliye chasme ki zaroorat paregi, aur har baat ko leke ek kharoos buhde ki tarah chilaynge... added Naku through her sniffing tears with a few laughs, making Dutta cheer her on subtly, ...tab bhi meri nazrein sirf tujhi ko dhundegi Naku, he let go of her hands, and walked away slowly, Naku main teri har mushkil ko theek tho nahin kar sakta, lekin itna kayal zaroor rakh sakta hoon ke tumhe aaj ke baad kisi bhi muhskil ka saamna akele nahin karna parega, tera yeh Dutta tere saath hamesha khada rahega, he promised.
As he walked back towards her he, he let the rest of the words come out naturally, Naku tu jab bhi yeh bolti thi ke meri Ayi yeh bolti hai woh bolti hai, tu jab bhi thoda sa muskarati hai, aur phir meri aankhon mein jaankti ho, aur unme se sirf mere liye tera pyar jhalak tha hai, tab tab mujhe ehsaas hota hai ke meri zindagi jeene ke liyak hai, ...main jaanta hoon ke aaj mere paas sirf yeh chan shabd hai jisse main tume haasil karne ki koshish karna chahata hoon, lekin in shabdo ke paas mere paas aur tujhe dene ko kuch nahi hai Naku, aaj tera sirf ek shabd ya to mujhe thod sakta hai, ya phir meri poori zindagi bana sakta hai Naku, uss din maine tujhe bolne ka mokha nahin diya lekin aaj main tujhe woh har mokha dena chahata hoon jo tujhe chahiye Naku, whilst saying this Dutta had crept down on to one knee, and held out his hand waiting to hear Naku's answer, ...you made me realise a man like me can be loved, and to be loved by someone like you is by far the best thing in this world Naku, in fact you have become my world Naku this life has been given by you, and today I want to give you all my life in return of yours, he finally finished, waiting for the answer from Naku who was now smiling and crying in joy.
All Naku could do was smile and cry at the same time, and nodding her head to say yes without speaking, making Dutta feel relieved and standing up and hugging Naku and at the same time picking her up and twirling her around, making him the happiest man alive at that point in time.

As Dutta was twirling Naku around, Naku had caught Gaurav's expression of disapproval, and realised what she was doing was wrong, wiping the smile off her face instantaneously, making her tell Saab to stop and put her down as the house members were staring, and Dutta mistaking this for her shyness set her down at once.

Ayi Sahib and Babi were both happy with the agreement as Babi had already been explained her purpose of her visit by Ayi Sahib, and at the same time giving her time to bind with her daughter, but of course there was one thing that was still worrying her.

After a while, Ayi Sahib had announced that they will call the family priest and set the dates for their second wedding, and in the meantime Dutta and Naku were not allowed to sleep together in the same room, until the second wedding's rituals were carried out properly, this wiped off Dutta's smile completely, taking him off guard, why didn't I see that one coming before thought Dutta.

Everyone was more than happy to see this new Dutta taking responsibility for his actions and better yet, rectifying his mistakes, everyone had given their blessings, but Dutta could sense there was something that Naku was not telling, yet, maybe she wanted to tell him in private, or could just as well be that she was going to driven away from his room by force, which Dutta could hardly see being the point considering Naku.

Later that night as suspected Naku had taken this to be her last chance to tell Dutta, and she knew if she didn't tell him now than she would forever regret this moment in her life.
Saab, main aapko kuch batana chahati hai, she started nervously, Dutta knew this sounded serious and could see it was hard for Naku to be standing there and telling him this, but one thing was evident that whatever it was she needed to tell him was definitely a reason for concern, bolo Naku, aaj tu jo bhi kehna chahti hai, main sunnu ga... he tried to encourage but not without ignoring his own feeling of his stomach churning, indicating that whatever was coming next was sure going to surprise him, and something was telling him it weren't going to be a in a good way.
Naku took a deep breath, and said, ...Saab main chahti hoon ke humari shaadi tab tak naa ho, jab tak meri pratiyogita khatam nahin ho jaati, she said, fighting with her words to come out right just this once, but before Dutta could say anything else, she went on, ...Saab, meri zindagi ka ek aisa sach hai jo main aap ko batana chahti hai, kabhi himmat nahin hui, lekin jab aapne mujhe aaj ek mokha diya, to main aap ko dokha nahin degi Saab, meri pratiyogita ke baad aap ka jo bhi faisla hoga main maanegi, pann is waqt aap mujhse koin sawaal matt karna Saab, she pressed with her words, but to her surprise Dutta stayed calm, and tried to understand the message she was giving through her unsaid words.

Naku mujhe nahin pata ke tu mujhe aisa kya batana chahti hai, ke tujhe lagta hai ke yeh baat humare rishte ko hilaa kar rakh de, lekin agar tu aisa bol rahi hai, to main intezaar karunga, main tumhare faisle ka maan rakhunga Naku... he finished.
