'Vampire Diaries' star Paul Wesley tells us why it's so good to be bad -- and spills on Stefan's response to Damon/Elena
tvd-paul-nina-stelena.jpgThis season on "The Vampire Diaries," we finally got to meet The Ripper, Stefan's bloodthirsty, ruthless alter-ego who had previously only been legend. We're not sure what it says about us that we found this sociopath version of our hero far more compelling than his usual compassionate martyr self, but we definitely did.

When it was revealed that Stefan had quietly quit drinking human blood (and was slowly reverting back to being the kind of guy who finds himself near tears on the regular) we couldn't help but be a little disappointed. We miss his swagger -- and we aren't alone in that.

"Yeah, yeah, it bums me out,"
Paul Wesley told us, calling from the car on his way to the airport for one of his usual flights between the set in Atlanta and his home in LA. "It does. You know it does. I really just enjoy [Ripper Stefan] a lot more. You play a vampire on screen, and when you have to play a good vampire, you have to fight your nature. Good Stefan doesn't feel as natural in terms of what I want to be doing on screen, and what I want to be saying. I feel a little stifled, myself, whenever he's resisting the urge to do vampiresque things."

In this week's episode we'll definitely see Stefan resisting the urge to drink blood. His withdrawal symptoms are surprisingly human for most of the episode -- he's twitchy and restless, and he fills the void with booze.

In the past, Paul has equated Stefan's blood issues to a drug addiction, but in this episode, we'll learn that Stefan trying to quit blood is less like a human trying to quit heroin... and more like a human trying to quit water. Blood is essential to a vampire's existence, so Stefan's detox isn't going to be anything resembling easy -- for himself, for his brother, or for Elena.

On Thursday, fans will get a little bit more insight into where Elena stands in regard to both Stefan and Damon when she confides in Matt about her relationships with the Salvatores. It's a rare moment where her guard is down and she's not trying to deny any feelings either way. Elena comes off as more self-aware than she has in quite a while.

As Damon and Elena have grown closer this season, the Stefan/Elena fans have become increasingly worried (and increasingly vocal). While we definitely have not seen the end of the "Delena" attraction, Paul tells us that fans waiting for Stefan and Elena to reconcile shouldn't give up hope.

"I think they have something to look forward to, to a degree," he says. "I don't think it's going to be like a walk in the park, but I think that at this point, they're open to a whole boatload of possibilities. You know how when a relationship ends, you might think 'Oh, these people will never get back together! They've been through so much!' But after a year, after two years, you meet again, and all of a sudden, you can forget all that. I don't know if they're going to get back together, but it's more of a possibility now than it was seven episodes ago, absolutely."

Oddly enough, the relationship that's most important in Stefan's life at the moment is his relationship with his brother. Despite the fact that Elena is more available than ever, Stefan and Damon are closer, now, than they've been since 1864.

Of course their relationship will continue to have its mercurial moments, but fans can expect Stefan and Damon to make an effort to remain allies for a while. This week, we'll see Damon go to drastic measures to help his brother out, and we'll see them discuss Elena honestly and without much animosity.

"I think they've come to this silent understanding of the fact that they both are in love with the same girl," Paul laughs. "They just allow it. To be honest, it's almost like Stefan allowed Damon to step in. I mean, that was Stefan's girl, and now Damon is suddenly a real factor, he's really in the picture. I think Stefan feels like he deserves this, in a way. He kind of abandoned her, in his mind."

As the season continues, we'll see Damon and Elena on a collision course for each other. The inevitability of their relationship isn't lost on Stefan, either. What you won't see, though, is Stefan giving anyone an ultimatum.

"This is the case for any relationship: you can't force anything," Paul says. "You have to let things happen naturally. Stefan, for his part, thinks that if Elena needs to explore the Damon side of things, she should be allowed to do that, and if she decides that Damon is indeed the guy she wants to be with, then I think Stefan would at that point be okay with losing her, because it means she wasn't the right girl for him anyway." He laughs. "I mean, otherwise, it'd be pretty pathetic. I don't want him to be pathetic. He's cooler than that, right?"

It certainly appears that way.

Tune in on Thursday at 8 p.m. EST to see how Stefan's addiction changes the way the people he cares about see him. And hey, if, like us, you kinda miss Stefan's psycho side, you'll definitely dig the flashbacks.

"The Stefan from 1912 is not the Stefan from 1920," Paul teases. "It's kind of cool. You get to see the creation of The Ripper."

'Vampire Diaries' preview: Cassidy Freeman and Paul Wesley tease upcoming episodes

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight with a flashback episode to 1912, when boxing vampire Sage (Smallville's Cassidy Freeman, starting a multi-episode arc) teaches Damon (Ian Somerhalder) how to choose victims for maximum enjoyment ' a lesson that also leads to the creation of Stefan the Ripper (Paul Wesley).

Was it a platonic mentorship back then? "I wonder if Damon is platonically involved with anyone. That's my question," Freeman laughs. "I wouldn't say that they have a burning love for one another, but there's definitely sexual tension."

It would appear to bubble over when Sage, who's heard that her one true love Finn (Casper Zafar) is now out of his coffin, comes to Mystic Falls in search of him in the March 22 episode. A recent promo for the show's spring run featured a steamy shot of Sage with Damon in his famed shower. "I can't actually tell you how many of my absolutely grown-women friends squealed like teenagers when they heard that I was gonna be in this show," Freeman says. "So I don't doubt that his bathroom, and more importantly his shower, is a place of interest. So I felt very fortunate."

A promo shot for the March 22 episode shows the two of them dancing, another of viewers' favorite activities for Damon. "We're party animals. We're that friend that always comes to town and you end up drinking too much, and then you don't really remember it the next day but you know you had a good time. That's the kind of friends that we are, I think."

Her visit takes an interesting turn, though. That recent promo also shows naked Damon and Rebekah in bed, with a clothed Sage caressing Rebekah's face. "They're all, 'Shower scene, ambiguous sexual orientation scene, boxing in 1912 ' do you want the part?' And I'm all, 'That's not a question. That's an offer,'" Freeman jokes. "It's definitely a manipulating time. In the present day, I'm trying to help Damon figure out what Rebekah's up to, and let's just say that we'll use any tactic that we can."

We assume there plan doesn't go well, since we've seen promo shots of Rebekah torturing Damon, and Sage looking distraught in the March 29 episode. "That shot has nothing to do with Rebekah or Damon, but I am very sad," Freeman says. (We're guessing it has something to do with self-loathing Finn, who, you'll recall, is helping his mother Esther try to kill him and his Original siblings. To save Elena, the Salvatore Brothers thwarted her plan by having Damon turn Bonnie's mother Abby into a vampire so Esther couldn't channel the power of the Bennett bloodline. Rebekah and Klaus, however, just learned there's apparently another white oak tree that can be used to kill Originals, so they're still in danger.)

The introduction of Sage comes at an interesting time, of course, as Damon is trying to help Stefan through his detox. We found out in the last episode that Stefan hasn't had a drop of human blood since the night he took Elena to the bridge where her parents died. "I think Sage's idea is that of pleasure and that of embracing being a vampire. So anytime that Stefan comes in with his do all-good attitude, it just doesn't click," Freeman says. "I don't think she's necessarily anti-Stefan or tries to push him too hard. I think she just sees a lot of future in Damon, especially back in 1912, where he could be the kind of vampire that she is and she can be a mentor to him. So she focuses more on being able to craft the Damon that we all know out of who he was in 1912, rather than worrying about Stefan too much."

In 1912, the Salvatore brothers reunite at a family funeral after being estranged for 50 years. "In that flashback, I'm almost courting his friendship, and in the present day, he's almost courting my friendship," Wesley says. "Back in the day, he was resentful of me, and in the present day, I've become very resentful of him. The episode is nicely interwoven in that regard."

Now we know why exec producer Julie Plec told us she wanted #TeamSalvatore to trend on Twitter (which it did). "We've been so contentious and hostile with one another that when we have these rare moments of friendship, I think it reminds the audience that these two guys are also an integral part of the triangle," Wesley says. "It's not just them both being in love with Elena. It's that they love each other as well."

Tonight's episode also features a bonding moment between Elena and Matt. Should Stefan consider Matt a threat to the show's central love triangle? "I think he absolutely should be a threat," Wesley says. "I think there's a level of simplicity to Matt. He's a good, uncomplicated kind of guy. At the end of the day, Stefan and Damon both bring a huge bag of complication and things don't go very well when Damon and Stefan are around. So I do believe that Elena should have some sort of a relationship with someone who is not supernatural. I think for sure that's a threatening thing, to a degree."

As for Stefan's relationship with Elena, there are promo shots from the March 29 episode, "The Murder of One," of them walking through the woods carrying weapons ' him a stake and her a crossbow ' and them deep in conversation with him appearing to gently touch her face. "The two of them are on a bit of mission, but during that mission, they sort of divert and talk about their relationship and the reality of what they've been through. It's a good story-line plot point that allows the two of them to be in a close situation and allows for a little bit of intimacy," Wesley says. Like, verbal intimacy or something more? He laughs. "Verbal. Intimacy in an emotional way," he says.

Looking ahead to the end of the season, Wesley says he still hasn't read the script for the finale, but that he's been doing scuba-diving training for a planned underwater sequence in the episode. We assume that means we're still on target to see a flashback to the car crash that killed Elena's parents before the series began (good Samaritan Stefan was only able to save Elena). He does offer one tease: "I think audiences can look forward to Stefan and Elena getting one step closer by the end of the season to potentially reuniting," he says. One step closer to potentially reuniting? That was carefully worded! "I'm very good at that sort of cagey answer," he laughs.

The Vampire Diaries: Paul Wesley Teases "Big Time" Hope and Heartbreak for Stefan and Elena

Prepare yourselves, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) fans: your ship is about to get rocked!

The Vampire Diaries finally returns to us tonight (wheee!) and we feel like we should warn some of you now: the love triangle takes a backseat. Not that you'll probably notice as "1912" offers up one of the series' most shocking twists ever. But fret not, romance lovers: season three's final string of episodes will be chock-full of shipper goodness. How do we know this?

We chatted with Paul Wesley about what's ahead for Stefan and Elena, including a "heartbreaking" conversation, and the return of Stefan from seasons past. Plus, will Stefan be getting a new love interest in the love triangle swings in Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) favor?

In tonight's episode, viewers will see Stefan begin his battle with moderation, with Damon leading the human blood drinking-train. "[Damon] tries to become that sort of mentor in a way in getting Stefan off the path of extremity and teaching him moderation," Wesley teases. "It all kind of comes to a head and it doesn't work out too well."

Though Stefan will not have an easy time with it, Wesley says the process will lead him back to Elena. "The more he deals with moderation, the closer he grows to Elena. He was so involved in his own darkness, he didn't have any time for romance. As the episodes progress, the audience is going to see Stefan maybe becoming more like he was season one and two, sort of the romantic lead hero."

Still, Wesley stresses that Stefan will always have that dark side ready to consume him at any moment. "What's really important is to make sure that Stefan always has a flaw and that he always has that potential darkness because I think the minute we make Stefan the same Stefan as season one, it becomes a little predictable."

While Wesley says there is still "big time" hope for Stefan and Elena's relationship, he gave us a little insight into an upcoming scene in episode 18 that may just break a few hearts. (Stefan and Elena scenes sometimes have a tendency to do that, don't they?)

"It's one of those things were they look at each other say, 'Hey, maybe this is too late. Maybe it's too late to actually salvage this.' I think it's two people who really love one another very deeply getting to a place of resolution about the fact that there may be no hope," he explains. "They have to conquer that. And I'm not saying they do because they certainly don't. I'm filming episode 21 right now and it's not like they're a lovey-dovey couple. But what I'm saying is the more truthful they are about what has happened, the more grim it is. But at the same time, it's more intimate because they're sharing these truths with one another."

Since there is a 50-50 chance Stefan could end up the loser (for now) in the epic love triangle, Wesley says he'd like to see a new love interest for the youngest Salvatore brother. "I think it's really important. I don't want to say that and anger anyone, but it's really important for Stefan to have another love interest," he tells us. "At least just for a moment or two. I really believe that every character on this show needs to have another love interest at point or another, including Elena and Stefan."

Wesley's suggestion?  "I think Stefan should potentially have a love interest with someone who's maybe just as dark as he is at times."

The Vampire Diaries airs tonight at 8 p.m. on the CW. Make sure to check back with us after tonight's episode for scoop on the game-changing twist!

Cassidy Freeman Teases 'Sordid' Vampire DiariesThreesome, Reigniting Damon's Bad Boy Ways

Get More: InterviewsPreviews
Matt Mitovich

The Vampire Diaries' Damon will have a blast in the past – and then get a blastfrom the past – starting tonight (on The CW, 8/7c), when Cassidy Freemaninhabits the role of Sage, an ol' vampire friend who in the books was a male, but let's face it — Cassidy Freeman? Yes, please. TVLine spoke with the Smallvillealumna about jumping back into the genre-TV ring (literallyand figuratively), how Sage will bring flavor to Damon's current existence and the super opportunities presented to her post-Smallville.

TVLINE | You've had a nice run of straight dramas — guesting on CSI: NYThe Playboy Club, the upcoming A&E series Longmire. Were you tentative at all about dipping back into genre TV?
Absolutely not. This more fantastical kind of vampire-superhero genre? It was super-fun.

TVLINE | Yeah, Sage is out there clobbering guys and canoodling, looking both vixenish and violent… what's not to like?
You know what I mean? [Laughs] It was a wide array of stuff. [Executive producer] Julie Plec was like, "Would you do it?" And I was like, "How could I not!"

TVLINE | How would you describe Damon and Sage's relationship in the "1912? flashbacks?
It's definitely a mentor-mentee relationship, and that's what I kind of love about this character. I've watched this series since it first started, and Damon is that vampire we all love to hate, and he has such a grasp on what being a vampire means to him. And what's really interesting about this flashback to 1912 is you figure out where that came from. When he was first turned, he wasn't like that, so this gives great insight into his arc during the entire time he's been a vampire.

TVLINE | How is Sage brought into the present timeline?
She comes back for her love, for Finn (played by Caspar Zafer), who is one of the Originals.

TVLINE | Aww. That's a nice reason.
Yeah! True love prevails.

TVLINE | What will Damon's reaction be to seeing her again?
It's one of surprise — that was a chapter of his life he thought was pretty much over. Plus, Sage was such a fantastical character in 1912 that you almost can't imagine her in the present day, because things aren't quite as heightened. To see her in the present brings back the memories of why he was who he was. Lately, Damon has been playing kind of a good guy, and seeing Sage reignites his bad boy ways — or his "tendencies," I should say.

TVLINE | Is he wary of her when they reunite? Does he suspect she has an agenda involving more than true love?
I think Damon is wary of everyone, and everyone has an agenda. It's definitely not wide-open arms, "Let's hug it out." There are a lot of question marks.

TVLINE | Let's talk about you beating up those guys up in the 1912 boxing ring – specifically, my slight unease that you seem a bit too much of a natural.
Yeah…. I do have two brothers, and I'm used to beating guys up, so…. I came a little bit early for the episode and studied with John Copeman, the stunt supervisor. We rehearsed together for probably two or three days before we shot it, and then he hired some really talented stunt people to make it look like I knew what I was doing.

TVLINE | There's a juicy new promo out…. What are we to make of the bed scene with Damon, Rebekah and Sage… who's apparently stroking Rebekah's face?
They released that?! I haven't even seen that. I need to go online more often. Hmm…. Well, she's definitely helping Damon figure out what Rebekah is up to. With any sort of threesome, you never know who to trust, but it's definitely a sordid affair — and because they're vampires, it has to happen in the bedroom. I think that's one of the rules!
