Waqar says 'hard to find a replacement' for retired Shoaib Akhtar

ShareThis | Facebook

Karachi, April 10 : Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has paid rich tribute to the recently retired fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, and said that it would be hard to find an ideal replacement for the enigmatic pacer.

Shoaib had announced his decision to retire from international cricket at the end of the World Cup, after he was plundered for 28 by Ross Taylor in his last over of the innings against New Zealand last month.

"Shoaib was a big name in Pakistan cricket and there is no doubt that he left an impact on the team. It is never easy to replace such players," the Daily Times quoted Waqar, as saying during a media interaction in Karachi.

"No one doubts that Shoaib has given some great service to Pakistan cricket and it will be hard to find a replacement for him, but it is also a fact that every cricketer has to call it a day sometime in his career," Waqar added.

Since his return to Pakistan after the World Cup, Shoaib has maintained a low profile despite reports that the majority of the players in the team wanted the management to select him for the crucial semi-final encounter against India, which Pakistan lost by 29 runs.

Speaking about the forthcoming West Indies tour, Waqar said that it should be a relatively easier series since both teams had announced new players in their squads.

"The World Cup is a benchmark for teams and normally after a World Cup the idea is to rebuild the team and introduce new players while giving rest to seniors or dropping some of them," he said.

"It will be a challenge for me to oversee the introduction of these new players into international cricket and to guide them on how to adjust and perform to this top level of the sport," he added.

The Pakistan coach also said that it was a good opportunity for the uncapped players to impress in the Pakistan-West Indies series and cement their places in the national team.

I don't understand why he wasn't given a game anyway in the World Cup should have checked out him and see whether he was good to play or was he injured?

I really don't understand why Shoaib is put on this high pedastal by some considering the fact that the guy was cheating by taking steroids for years and was suspended for taking steroids..........Why so much praise for a player who in essence was a cheater? What kind of example are we to set for all the kids who follow cricket the world over by singing praises of a player who cheated the game? Players who have been caught cheating the game in regards to match fixing, steroids usage etc should not be praised.......Any good cricketer can become a great cricketer with the help of steroids.......players who succeed on their own merits should be applauded, not someone like Shoaib who uses steroids to give himself an advantage over others...Confused Jadeja was a great batsman but the fact that he was involved in match fixing makes him a cheater......It doesn't matter which country the player is from, a cheater should be treated like a cheater NOT like a hero........Confused
