Ram Navami also known as Sri Ram Navami is a Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya of Ayodhya. Ram is the 7th incarnation of the Dashavatara of Vishnu[1][2][3]. The festival falls in the Shukla Paksha on the Navami, the ninth day of the month of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar. Thus it is also known as Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami, and marks the end of the nine-day Chaitra-Navratri celebrations.

At some places the festival lasts the whole nine days of the Navratras, thus the period is called 'Sri Rama Navratra'. It is marked by continuous recitals, Akhand Paath, mostly of the Ramacharitamanas, organized several days in advance to culminate on this day, with elaborate bhajan, kirtan and distribution of prasad after the puja and aarti. Images of infant form of Sri Rama are placed on cradles and rocked by devotees. Since Rama is the 7th incarnation of Vishnu having born at noon, temples and family shrines are elaborately decorated and traditional prayers are chanted together by the family in the morning. Also, at temples special havans are organized, along with Vedic chanting of Vedic mantras and offerings of fruits and flowers. Many followers mark this day by Vrata (fasting) through the day followed by feasting in the evening, or at the culmination of celebrations.

The important celebrations on this day take place at Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh), Bhadrachalam (Andhra Pradesh) and Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), thronged by thousands of devotees. Rathayatras, the chariot processions, also known as Shobha yatras of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, are taken out at several places including Ayodhya where thousands of people take a dip in the sacred river Sarayu.

Natal chart of Sri Rama:

Valmiki in his Sanskrit text Ramayan describes the natal or birth chart of young Rama, and this day is celebrated as Ramanavami festival throughout India and amongst Indian diaspora:

"On completion of the ritual six seasons have passed by and then in the twelfth month, on the ninth day of Chaitra month [March-April], when the presiding deity of ruling star of the day is Aditi, where the ruling star of day is Punarvasu (Nakshatra), the asterism is in the ascendant, and when five of the nine planets viz., Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus are at their highest position, when Jupiter with Moon is ascendant in Cancer, and when day is advancing, then Queen Kausalya gave birth to a son with all the divine attributes like lotus-red eyes, lengthy arms, roseate lips, voice like drumbeat, and who took birth to delight the Ikshvaku dynasty, who is adored by all the worlds, and who is the greatly blessed epitome of Vishnu, namely Rama."

- Book I : Bala Kanda, Ramayana by Valmiki, Chapter (Sarga) 18, Verse 8, 9, 10 and 11

Bhajans:

Ram Navmi (Chaupaiyan from RCM):

Bhaye Pragat Kripaala (from RCM):

Baby Ram walks, swaying unsteadily
His anklets ring in tune with his steps

Laughing joyously he stumbles around on the ground
He is fondly picked into the laps of King Dasharatha's queens

Baby Ram walks, swaying unsteadily
His anklets ring in tune with his steps

They cover him with their saris, dusting the dirt off and caressing his bruises
They offer loving and reassuring words of devotion to make him feel better

Baby Ram walks, swaying unsteadily
His anklets ring in tune with his steps

Baby Ram's ruby red lips speak sweet melodious words
Ornaments decorate his nose and waist

Baby Ram walks, swaying unsteadily
His anklets ring in tune with his steps

Poet Tulsidas is thrilled at the face of Ram, which has the glory of the Sun
Baby Ram is exactly what he had imagined him to be

Baby Ram walks, swaying unsteadily
His anklets ring in tune with his steps

Mon japo naam

O my heart! Keep uttering that sacred name,

Shri Raghupati Ram

The name of Raghunath Shri Ram,

Mon japo naam.

Shri Raghupati Ram.

Nabo durbadalo shyam, nayanabhiraam.

His blue beauty is like the newly-born holy Durva grasses, he is the pleasure of our eyes.

Mon japo naam.

Shri Raghupati Ram

Mon japo naam.

Surasuro kinnoro yogi muni risi naro (2)

All the Gods, all the demons, all the Kinnaras, all the Saints & all the human beings,

Characharo je naam jape abiraam.

With the whole universe, worships that name always.

Jape abiraam.

They worships the name always.

Shri Raghupati Ram.

Mon japo naam

Nayone karunaa aanone prosaanti.

Kindness in his eyes, & peace on his face.

Naam sarone tute jaye shok taapo bhraanti. (2)

Remember his name, & you will forget all grief & all wrong ways.

A poem written by me in Bengali which was translated by Debipriya di,

RAMCHANDRA

Antare raeche sadh, dekhibo tahare,

jar lagi janamilo ei sangsare

dev-vasha sanskrito Valmikir mukhe.

A deep longing is there in my heart to have a glimpse of Him, for whom the great seer Valmiki onceived the 'Dev Bhash'a Sanskrit.

Dekhibo tahare, jar lagi raj-sukhe

diachen bisarjan ati anayase

rajar kumari Sita, pati-prem bashe.

To have a glimpse of Him, inspired by Whose love, Princess Sita very easily sacrificed ALL the royal comfort.

Sei maha manober chahi darshan,

jar prati snehe rajkumar Lakshman

dhorilen swa-icchay tapaswir besh,

sahilen akarane banobas -klesh.

To have darshan of the Mahamaanav, inspired by Whose love, Raajkumar  Lakshman accepted the attire of a 'tapasv'i and bore all the troubles of 'Vanvaas'.

Dekhibare chahi ami sei gunoban,

je putrer birahete tyajilen pran

nripo-shrestha Dasharath.

To have a sight of the Virtuous One, the pain of Whose separation made His Father, the Best of the Kings Dasharath, leave his mortal body.

Kemon se jan

jahar paduka nitya karen pujan

rajya-majhe rajya-tyagi kumar Bharat?

How He is, Whose 'paduka' is daily worshipped by the Great Kumar Bharat, who, even while staying in the kingdom, stays out of all its grandeours?

Kon mahagune eto sneher sampad

biraje tahar grihe?

Why (For which Virtue) all these loved ones belong Only to Him?

Ki punyer jore

manusya-itar prani sebilo tahare

tyajia apon swartho bipader kale?

Because of which Merit, animals, who are even below the level of human beings, served Him without any personal(/selfish) aim, in the times of adversity?

Dhanya tini, jar prati mahaprem- bale

karilen mahasati aponare tran

Ashok-kanone jabe chhilo tar sthan.

Hail to the Lord! Whose Love made the Mahasati Sita save herself when she was kept in Ashok-kanan.

Dhanya tini, jare bhalobasia antore

pailen mahashakti se mahasamare

anuj Soumitri.

Hail to the Lord! Whose Love made the younger one Soumitri stronger from inside during the time of the fierce battle.

Dhanya sei punyaban,

jare bhakti kari mahabir Hanuman

karilen shatobar asadhya-sadhon.

Hail to the Lord! Whose Devotion made the great Mahaveer Hanuman perform miraculous deeds hundreds of times.

Jahar jiban-gatha gahi Ramayan

swarger kahini marte karilo prachar,

chahi punya-darshan sei punyatmar.

Want a Darshan of the Supreme, whose Divine life story is sang as Ramayan in this mortal world.

The same poem was translated by Lola in Hindi

man mein mere pyaas jagi hai, karlun unke darshan

vaalmiki rachi dev bhaasha karne jinka shubh varnan

main bhi dekhun kiske prem mein Sita Janak dulaari

hanske taje sukh mahalon ke van chaldi raajkumari

jin mahamaanav ki seva Lakshman ko aisi bhaaye

dhara tapasvi vesh, chala vanvaas Avadh ko bhulaaye

naina poochhe kaun hai Dashrath ke nainon ka taara

Raja param paraakrami jinke virah mein praan tha haara

charan paduka kiski nis din pooje Bharat kumaar

bana jo jogi raajdhaani bich Ram raajya sanbhaar

kya kya gun hai unme, kaisi mohini, kaisi maaya

jo jan jan ne unhe hi apne man mandir mein bithaaya

kaisa punya kiya jo nar kya, pashu bhi shish jhukaaye

nirmal man, nishkaam bhaav le seva karne aaye

Unhe mera vandan ke jinki kar Soumitri bhakti
Shatru dal ka sarvanaash karne ki paaye shakti

Unko naman mera shat shat hai, lekar jinka naam
chamatkaar kiye baar baar Bajrangbali baldhaam

Maano lagan lagi hai mujhko, unke darshan paaun

Jinki divya katha Ramayan harash harashkar gaaun

A story written by me & posted in another thread before

LOVE FOR GOD IS THE ONLY POWER IN UNIVERSE

In a small remote village of Gorakhpur, a teenage girl named Arati lived with her widow mother. They were very poor. They were low-born & they used to suffer all kinds of cast problems. Each villager avoided them, & hated their company. Nobody loved them; none spoke a single word with them & none ate in their house! Even if they were in utter distress, nobody cared about that!

Arati was a true devotee to Lord Ram. When her mother was totally broken down due to the immense grief from everywhere, she consoled her & said, "Don't cry, mother! This is Leela of Ramji! He wants to test our devotion to him! That's why we are suffering so much!"

The mother became astonished hearing those words. How did the young girl learn such lessons!

Arati always said to her Lord, "Whoever neglects me, I don't bother, my Lord! I know that you love me, & that's all for me! Your love is my only wealth in this universe!"

Their days passed like that.

Arati was preparing for the next Ram-Navami. She told Lord Ram, "I want nothing from you. I know very well that you have to come to me if I can wait like Shavari! You can never forget me if I can love you as Hanuman did! O God! How can you neglect me if I can tolerate all agony of life for you as Sita Maa did?" Arati told this, & wept silently. She felt it will be impossible for her to spend a life without getting Darshan of Ramji.

The Ram-Navami came. On the morning, Arati finished her bath earlier & went to collect flowers for puja.

But she did not notice that a servant of the rich village-leader was also there in the garden, for the same purpose! He burst into anger when noticed Arati in the garden. He shouted, "What are you doing here?"

Arati answered calmly, "I'm collecting flowers for Lord", but the servant shouted more loudly, "How dare you! Having born in such a low cast family, you want to worship Lord Ram! Get out from here at once! Otherwise you will be punished severely."

Arati said, "But what is my guilt? Lord is affectionate to all. He loves me, & I love him. Why are you creating such a divider between me & my Lord?"

He told again, "I'm giving you the last warning, Arati! Just get lost!"

Arati rigidly answered, "No. I have to collect flowers for puja."

Then the servant left the place & informed his master. The village-leader came & told, "Why are you destroying the purity of my garden? The flowers which are touched by you can never be dedicated to Lord. Try to realize that. How will today's puja be completed without flowers? Don't touch anything again, ok? Please leave this place as soon as you can", then he ordered his servant to wash his garden with Ganga-water!

But Arati didn't move. The village-leader told again, "Have you not heard my words?"

Arati answered, "Yes Sir! I've heard you. But you are absolutely wrong. How can you think that Lord Ram will not accept the flowers touched by me? Sir, have you forgot that he ate fruits from a low-cast woman like Shavari with a huge respect? Have you forgotten that he was friend of king of Nisaad's? Have you forgotten that Sita Maa called 'mother' to a demoness Trijata? Sir! Neither Ramji nor Sita Maa supports the rules you have made to divide this society! They are not pleased with your activities. Please try to realize them. They are parents of the whole universe! Do the parents hate or neglect their children?"

"As you don't want to listen to my soft words, I have to teach you a lesson", the village-leader called his servants who rudely drove the poor girl away.

But what a wonder! The garden became totally vacant at that moment when Arati was driven away! There was no a single flower in that large garden!

All became astonished. The master ordered to collect flower from anywhere. The servants tried at their best, but could not find a single flower!

On the other hand, Arati's little cottage became filled with flowers! Arati thanked Ram-Sita again & again.

The village-leader was really anxious regarding the festival of Ram-Navami. The puja could not be started till then. All villagers were invited there to join the puja, but none came!

If he knew that, all people were gathered to celebrate Ram-Navami in Arati's cottage, then what was his mental condition? But it is natural that true devotees will always prefer the purity more than the external grandeurs.

The proud rich master was alone in his room. A little boy came to him. He looked like very poor, but he had a divine smile in his face. He told in a divine voice, "Sir! I'm starving since a long times. Please give me some food." The master scolded him harshly, "Is this place of donation to all the beggars? Get lost from here! Don't disturb me! Are you not seeing that I'm busy with puja?"

The boy said with smile, "Are you doing puja? Then where is your God? I can't see him anywhere in your house!"

The rich man became totally astonished, "Are you blind? Can you not see this golden statue of Lord Ram & Sita Mata in my room?"

The boy answered, "I can see, Sir, but it's true, these golden statues are empty! They are not Gods; they are only the expressions of your pride of wealth! God can never live in a golden statue which is not welcomed by devotee's love. God loves his devotees, not the wealth."

"Who are you", shouted the master. He was going to call his servants to drive the boy away.

But before that, the boy smiled, "You need not call anyone to remove me from here! I will leave this place myself. I will never return to you."

The boy disappeared suddenly, & the golden statue became clay at that moment!

Then the boy went to Arati, lovingly asked, "Didi! Can you give something to eat? I'm starving from many days."

Arati affectionately told him, "Surely, my sweet brother! What is your name?"

The boy answered, "My name is Raghunath, isn't it good?" Arati looked at her Lord lovingly, & told him, "You have the same name with my God! Brother! Please accept all of these fruits!"

Raghunath smiled, "Didi! You are worshipping God. How can you give these fruits to me? These are for Ramji & Sitaji! I can't take them!"

Arati said, "No child! Now you are my God as you are in front of me. I believe that my Lord is everywhere; we only need proper eyes to see him & proper heart to feel him! I can easily feel that he lives in you, & none but he wants to eat from my hands! I waited long for that! How can I refuse him?"

Then Raghunath ate all the fruits & told Arati, "Now I have to go. Good night!" He disappeared. But Arati found the empty bucket is full of fruits! She became astonished. How was it possible!

Then a divine voice was heard, "Arati, my child, these are my blessings to you! Accept them as my 'Prasaad'."

Arati shouted with an immense pleasure, "My Lord, where are you? Where are you Maa Janaki? Will you not give me your sacred Darshan?"

Then Lord Ram & Devi Sita appeared in front of her. The Lord said, "Arati! Couldn't recognize me? None but I came to you in the form of that little boy! I came to you to quench my thirst for love & devotion. My intention has been fulfilled. You will be counted as one of my greatest devotees!"

Devi Sita asked her, "What do you want from us, little girl?"

Arati said, "Nothing Maa! I want nothing but your love."

Sitaji blessed, "Well, my child! You will be dear to me as my Luv-Kush.". They blessed her, & disappeared.

Arati bowed her head again & again to them. Her eyes became filled with tears of joy!

JAI VAIDEHI RAGHUVIR!

Thanks Vedo for creating the thread! May Lord Ram bless all of you!

Jai Shri Ram!
