4. The Party
He was late getting to Amritsar. A strange kind of restlessness plagued him since he started the journey. May be it was coz daadi did not come with him as planned. She had sprained her legs last evening and did not want to risk a swelling. So she was staying with the home nurse. He had called sometime back to talk to her and she seemed all right, probably playing cards with the staff. He smiled at the thought.
It was not difficult to find Arjun's house. Meeti's happiness on seeing him was enough to compensate the tiring drive to Amritsar.
"Maamu! Maamu!" Her exhilarated cry rank out as she let go of mother's hands and ran to him with open arms, when she saw him getting out of the car.
Maan swung her up and laughed to hear her giggle. She put her dimpled arms around his neck and held on tight. His eyes misted when she kissed his cheeks and then hid her face in his neck.
"Naani?" she asked looking expectantly towards the car, when she got over her shyness.
"Naani didn't come Meeti. Naani is sad that she hurt her leg and cudn't come for her angel's birthday. She did send her Meeti a lot of toys and told Maamu to give you her kiss." He said as he kissed her cheek.
Maan saw Annie touch the corner of her eyes with her thumb as she walked towards them. He closed her in with a hug.
"Meeti has been checking the door every ten minutes since morning. We missed you Bhai!"
"Then why don't you come back?"
"Don't start that again", Annie pushed herself away from Maan. When they entered the home she held out her hands to Meeti. "Come Meeti, let maanu wash his hands and face."
"No," she said stubbornly and held on tight.
"Let her be," Maan said, ruffling her curls.
Meeti refused to let him out of her sight even after getting the dolls and teddy bears and the whole lot of toys that he brought with him. Though she played with them she kept looking behind to see if Maan was sitting on the chair. After talking a while, when Maan stood up to go to the guest room Meet too stood up her toys abandoned!
"Okay Meeti, let us show Maamu his room so that he can change to his home dress then maamu won't go out. When he is changing Meeti and mamma can get maamu something to eat. Poor Maamu must be hungry!"
"Are you hungry Maamu?" Meeti asked concerned.
"Yes", Maan said. Let maamu wash his hands then we can have something to eat."
As the afternoon progressed maan learned more abt their life in Amritsar. Meeti had become more talkative and a certain Peethi and Simi featured in most of her talks. When asked abt them Annie said Peethi was Preeti who was Meeti's best friend, also Arjun's friend's niece and Simi was Simran, Preeti's maasi. Meeti went to the day care ran by Simran.
"You will meet them in the evening", Annie said.
Annie became worried once the party started. She couldn't remember ever being this tense. Not for the first time she wondered if she was doing the right thing. She didn't have any doubt until she got to know Simran. She cudn't believe her eyes, the first time she saw Simran. The resemblance to Geet was so striking. The only difference was that Simran had curly hair and hazel eyes. They had met at the dinner at Dhariwals. Thru' out the evening she watched Simran, looking for similarity other than the physical resemblance. She found that, while Geet was so talkative that her enthusiasm bubbled over to the person she was with, Simran was quiet and reserved to the point of being an introvert until you got to know her better. She had an air of fragility about her that it was no wonder that the Dhariwal brothers were both protective and possessive of her. Annie learned that Simran ran a play school and daycare centre. So she used that to turn the acqauintance into friendship. As she got to know Simran, she stopped looking for Geet in her and started liking her for herself. Now she admired Simran's dedication to her sister Jaspreet, who was married to Jai's brother Jeet. Jaspreet developed some complication during her delivery and a further accident had turned her comatose. Simi, as her friends and family called her, became Preeti's mother. Even now, almost two years since the accident, she spend at least an hour a day with her sister to bring her up to date with her daughter's life. Knowing all this Annie wondered if she was making the right decision by bringing Maan into Simran's life... But there was no turning back now, she thought, taking her eyes of her brother and walked with Arjun towards the entrance to greet the Dhariwals.
Maan had noticed Annie's preoccupation during the party. She seemed tense abt something and he wondered if it was because this was the first time she organised a party in the new place. He had seen Arjun place a comforting hand on her shoulder more than once. He decided to talk to her, but he saw her moving forward to greet the new guests. He saw Annie looking towards him and wondered if she wanted him with her. As she started to walk forward his phone rang. It was daadi. He looked at Annie and saw her watching him again. Puzzled he lifted his mobile and shook it to signal that he had to attend the call. Then walked out of the room.

"Maamu! Maamu!" he heard Meeti calling him as he finished his call.
" I'm here, Meeti." He walked towards her.
"Come, I want to show you Peethi"
He smiled as she pulled him along towards a group of people who stood with Arjun. The little girl, Preeti seemed to be in a hurry to find her friend. She was struggling to get away from her mother who was holding her firmly, while bending down to whisper something in her ears. Probably some last minute instruction on model behaviour, he thought remembering similar scenes with Annie and Meeti. Meeti was in equal haste to join her friend.
"Just a moment, Meeti, let me say hello to Preeti's papa first." He said as she pulled at him.
He let go of her hand and walked toward the men. After shaking hands with Jai and Jeet Singh Dhariwal, he saw Jeet beconing his wife and daughter forward.
"Meet my imp Miss Preeti Dhariwal and..."
Maan turned to greet them and the rest of Jeet's words faded away for him. He saw his Mishti standing before him, an impersonal smile pasted on her lips.
"Geet," he whispered in shock. He saw her eyes reflect the shock that was in his and heard her gasp as she swayed on her feet. As always in the past he reached over to hold her before she fell, but another pair of hands beat him to it. He saw Jeet's arms encircle his Geet.
