Maan's gyaan on staying fit

We have seen Maan Singh Khurana aka Gurmeet Choudhary, in STAR One's Geet Hui Sabse Parayi, showing his fit body to his fans. We cornered him to share some interesting tips on fitness, workout and diet just for his fans.


Most people are too busy to work out. What tips can you give them for maintaining their body?
For people who can't work out daily, I would suggest that they should maintain a healthy diet, watch what they eat. Exercise does thirty percent of the trick, rest of your fitness depends on your diet.

What diet can they follow?
Though boiled vegetables are great, not many people like to eat them. So I suggest having less oily food, less spicy and no junk food at all. Have as many fruits like apples, banana as you can. Stick to home cooked food as it keeps you healthy. Drink at least two litres of water daily.

What tips would you give to office goers who are stuck to a desk?
Don't sit at a place for long. Take a 10-15 min walk every one or two hours.

Are free weights better than machine/cable weights?
Free weights are always better because you can carry it everywhere. You can exercise at home, if you are feeling lazy to go to the gym. If you want a break or variety from free weights and body weights, you can use bottle filled with water too.

If one doesn't have time to hit the gym, do walking or jogging or yoga help as replacements?
Walking and jogging works as cardio but one shouldn't do only cardio as it eats away the muscle. Yoga helps to keep the body and mind relaxed. Whatever you do you have to follow it regularly as there is no shortcut to success. You will see results in the long run.

How can you gauge on how much weight you should lift?
First timers should stick to low weights and increase with time. They should do 12 repetition at first and if they feel they like it and can do more, then try doing 20 repetitions. When you feel fatigue, you will realize you have reached your ideal weight. But that takes time.

What exercises do you suggest to get abs or to people who want to lose weight?
Losing weight is tough and getting rid of a belly is tougher. But it is also very important to lose weight around your abdomen. Cardio is a must and running is a good exercise. It helps a lot but one must combine it with alternate weight training too. Crunches and sit-ups help in tightening or toning the abs.

How often should one exercise?
If you can, you should exercise daily. But I know it isn't possible for many people, so try to work out five days a week. You can alter your schedule as you want but if you regularly work out five days a week, you will see great results. Exercise and physical fitness are essential in maintaining a fit body and mind. Working out not only helps you look good but also enables you to stay healthy till your old age.
